Digital Foundry Article Technical Discussion [2024]

Looping back to this.

Surely, the Pro should have absolutely no issue maintaining 60fps at 1080p in this game? A 3070 averages 71fps with lows in the mid 50s. With proper DRS and tweaks, frame gen should not be needed on the Pro.
Of course. This is one good example for exposing PC setting in console games. Don't make it the default, have it so that you have to enable a setting in the console, and only then they show up in the game. Something like an "advanced mode".

Accessed by pressing Left, Left, Down, Down, Up, Right, Up, Right, L1+R2, L2+R1, and finally hold all four shoulder buttons and press X.

I wouldnt put Indiana for number 1 just for very underwhelming animation and rigid character models (face expressions) at cutscenes. My top 3 would be 1. H2 (tech demo but its not gameawards) 2. Wukong 3. Indiana

Good to see stuttering sure is changing the nature of their lists. The best graphics in the world don't mean anything when the game is unenjoyable to play because it's stuttering.

I get why they would say that Indy is the best based on the overall package, and it's certainly much more of a game than Hellblade 2, but I haven't played a game that looks or feels as insane as HB2. Everything felt and looked so good that it felt almost impossible. I barely ever take screenshots of a game but I took so many of HB2. It's the only game I played and finished this year. I am going through some issues in my life this year that have made me lose my appetite for games or much of anything, but I played and finished HB2. The characters are impeccably rendered. The lighting is amazing. The materials and the material response to lighting.
The rocks my god, you think "Yeah rocks look good in a lot of games now" but then you see the hills, rocks cliffs, and pebbles in HB2 and the amount of geometric detail and intricacies enabled by their use of Nanite. All of it feels so real. It's hard to convey what I am trying to say here with regards to how solid present and real the environment feels.

So yeah, while it's not much of a game as Indy, it looks so good and more cohesive than any other game I have played in a really really long time.

The top 3 selection was clear to me. With the exception of Wukong I would have found everything else strange. Of these 3 games I haven't played through Indiana Jones yet but I'm in the running. At the moment I still see Outlaws in the lead. I've also taken by far the most screenshots in Outlaws.

A game which I would have mentioned is Nobody Wants to Die. That looked very nice as well.

I have also played Silint Hill 2 a bit and while it looks good Hellblade 2, Outlaws and Indiana Jones are even better.

Flight Simulator 2024 looks better than anything in its category. What's more, it has assets that surpass even modern action games in the natural environment, such as trees, bushes and the detail of the airplane models. But most importantly, it has absolutely awesome graphics when flying in the clouds.

Overall, the most visually spectacular game of the generation for me.

Yeah I agree. I tried on both pc and xsx and my god it’s hard to believe how far real time 3d graphics come along. First I launched this on pc and then I thought, ok let’s have a good laugh and try this on xsx but my god the game looks phenomenal. Almost all the time I stopped playing for few minutes to just look around in complete shock that this is possible on current gen consoles. All the stuff you mentioned rocks pebbles water fog rain sun just looks so insane so detailed. And why we had before some of this done really well, in this game all of this comes along as one beautiful cohesive image that sells it. Sure game is very limited just like first one but many great games were like this. And the first fight scene that was mentioned in DF video. Wow just wow the animation, the tension … it was so emotional I stooped playing just to reflect on what just happened. Amazing stuff. What a great year in general so much high quality stuff. Let’s hope 2025 will be even better.

Edit. Yeah and sound!!! Jesus the sound glues everything together to the experience that is hard to forget.

I got through the top 7 and honestly I don't know that I'd pick any of those, not because of tech but because of art. I just don't mesh with the art styles of any of those games at all. I'd honestly rather look at Tiny Glade, which has both tech and a nice art style over any of them.

The top three I wouldn't argue with, though I'd put Indiana Jones at the bottom of the three just from not having the best art of the three.

yea, Outlaws did such a good job with the lighting and all light sources. Indy does get the win for me though. HB2 has the best detail of any game out there. Including character rendering.

If Indiana Jones is number 1 last year could have produced more visual impressive games. Cyberpunk 2077 is bigger and plays more with the dynamic lighting and with light and shadows. Especially Phantom Liberty. Then there was also Alan Wake 2 which almost looks like a film in some sections due to its flawlessness.

They picked the exact top 3 that I would have picked for this year.

What did you disagree with?
1. Black Myth Wukong
2. Hellblade 2
3. Silent Hill 2
4. Astro Bot

I also think a game like Dragon's Dogma 2 doesn't belong anywhere in this conversation. Indiana Jonas outside of the ray tracing is utterly unimpressive to me.

Hellblade 2 looks atleast one generation ahead of everything else and the asset quality and geometric density is way higher than Indy. Plus it runs flawlessly on my laptop while Indy doesn't. Characters look 3 generations ahead even.

IMO, HB2 should have taken the crown.

It doesn’t look a generation ahead of BMW for sure, but I’d have no problem with it at number 1.
