It was even 4K on the Series S around 12 months ago using the very early and rough devkits.

It's a decent enough game that was worth the price of FREE on Game Pass. At least until it got annoying if you tried to get all the achievements.

RDNA2 runs RB+ which is a 2x increase for colour rops provided you don’t exceed the 32bpp colour rate, and it supplies the shader engine at 2x as well.

right. 2x depth rops. Not sure in practice how much can be additionally exploited. Thinking out loud I suspect they weighted towards colour rops over depth on purpose; likely because there wasn’t enough colour rops.

I guess there's some special circumstances that legacy RDNA1 ROPS of PS5 have some benefits.

no advantages on the legacy design. There is 2x the number of RBEs on PS5, there’s no way using non RB+ could it do with 50% less. MS cut it in half and used the space savings for additional silicon towards CUs.

It was a risk for these types of situations, but in compute heavy workloads it should hold an advantage given how many more of them there are.

Summary copied from KageMaru @ XEra [ https://forum.xboxera.com/t/games-analysis-ot-time-to-argue-about-pixels-and-frames/5015/4321 ]

-The RT AO on the PC/Xbox versions is replaced with SS AO on the PS5.
-Baked in bounced lights are removed on the PS5
-RT reflections are lower resolution on the PS5
-Shadows are slightly lower resolution on the PS5
-Resolutions range from 1620p-1728p on the PS5 while the Xbox version runs between 1026p-1440p.
-Performance is overall better on the PS5 but has pretty bad frame pacing.
-The previous issue of frame pacing on the Xbox has been fixed but the drops in performance still exist.

So basically it comes down to a slight downgrade to visual features at a higher resolutions or slight upgrade to visual features at lower resolutions.

That XSX resolution range is inconsistent with Alex's comments. Apparently it was a low of 720p with the dual views at 972p.

The obvious question to ask is this: which take on The Medium works best? There's no easy answer here because ultimately it comes down to personal preference, but it does look as though Bloober has essentially delivered the equivalent of a 'fidelity' mode on Series X and something more akin to a 'balanced' mode on PlayStation 5. The Microsoft machine offers up a more polished look with more of an emphasis on ray-traced effects. Meanwhile, PS5 delivers a much more convincing 4K-like image by trading visual quality, gaining performance in the process. Both still look impressive, of course, thanks to the quality of the core artwork. Perhaps there are technical reasons we're unaware of that prevent this happening, but I can't help but think that both consoles should have access to both modes - and the option of a clearer image may also yield dividends for Xbox Series S too.

I say that the game is what it is. If you're in the position where you need to decide what platform to play it on because you have multiple, well the visual/performance differential isn't enough to justify one over the other on its own. Rather focus on the other areas which may add to the experience as DF pointed out. Controller preference, achievements vs trophies...or perhaps where you can simply get it cheapest!
