Crytek to showcase Cryengine 2 on consoles

Ok I have to apologise..

I really didn't intent to spin this thread off topic (hence the reason I asked for a PM response on that particular subject..

Now can we please move back onto the discussion at hand people..

Some Cryengine info.

IGN: What's the performance difference of the CryENGINE on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 compared to the PC? Are you able to tailor the engine to each platform?

Harald Seeley: Yes, we definitely tailor the engine specifically to each platform. More than just the difference in CPU and video hardware capabilities of PCs and consoles is at play here. So are the much smaller memory budgets we must work with, the lack of a hard disk on some models, and the acceptance requirements of the hardware vendors themselves. All have an effect on how we approach each version of the engine.

The surprising thing has been how well the consoles can perform visually, once this tailoring is in place. We expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they're running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC. Actually, we found it as much or more challenging to address the memory limitations of the consoles when converting our current AI system, as we did while converting our rendering engine or physics system, which was not something you might have expected at the start.

IGN: Would you like to share any thoughts as to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360? What about the Wii? Will we see CryENGINE 1 games on it, perhaps?

Harald Seeley: Well there is no doubt that porting our engine to the PlayStation 3 is the more challenging of our two ongoing conversion projects, but that works to our advantage in the end. We feel certain we have the ability to get the most that is possible out of that platform, and therefore PS3 games which run on our engine in the future will definitely stand significantly apart from other games that don't. We haven't seen a great deal of demand for third party engines for the Wii, the limited complexity of games which can be developed for that console also limits the need for the kind of sophisticated tools and middleware which we are known for. So I doubt we will be providing any engine technology for that console in the near term.

thanks mod:)

Very interesting! On the one hand this should finally lay to rest all the rubbish about consoles being able to handle Crysis on full. On the other hand its impressive to hear that they are achieving even near High quality.

I might not have to upgrade my video card after all :)
They should add Kb & M support like UT3 :D

This isn't a confirmation that Crysis is coming to consoles though, just that the engine itself is running ok on them. If you want to play Crysis the game then PC is currently still the only option.

I'm curious to know what "nearly" high settings means though. I assume its not simply a caes of some settings at medium and some at high but rather every setting in the game is completely customised for the consoles. So some will be full high, some will be between high and medium, some may even be medium or lower and its possible that some of the settings could go beyond high.

Resolution is a big question mark aswell. Is all this at 720p or have the lowered res to squeeze in more graphics. Also what about MSAA/AF? Yep lots of questions that need answering here!

I am not believing this because the consoles dont have the RAM to approximate high PC settings.

Also you'll see he's talking in terms of the engine being used in generic PC games, and that the console versions could look like those games on high settings (a generic statement practically every developer claims about their console ports from PC) not Crysis

Thats so true. I can think of countless examples of developers claiming game x will be identical across PC's and consoles and then looking completely different in reality.

A few obvious examples have been Doom 3, Serious Sam 2 and Oblivion.

I can see why they say it (they want to sell the games afterall), but you do have to take statements like this with a pinch of salt.

Well not in Crysis I would think but in other games or with scaled down scope then perhaps 'near high' equivalent settings. Though the "We expect.." part just sounds so similar to other comments regarding other games and well we know how that turned out... ;)

Although nothing said about Crysis, just how games would run/look on the engine (or rather expected by the devs to look like). The scope obviously does a lot regarding perfomance requirements. If Crysis would have levels designed as those in Quake4 with the same size scope then obviously that would require a lot less of the hardware than huge scope levels with lots of foliage/stuff.

"Nearly high" maybe then talking about more options in high like performance in ATI 3870 crossfire nearly 1080P resolutions (1600x1200) ,in console 720P maybe is more than enough for crysis " nearly high":

(maybe cpus optimized and direct acess hardware gpu whithout API doing some good diference...)

Add Operation Flashpoint to the list, touthed to have better graphics for the xbox version but ending up looking far worse.

Neverthless you cant expect them to say the console versions will look like medium or medium+, they have a game/engine to sell!

Well he does say games powered by CryEngine2 for consoles but nothing about Crysis at all.

Those benchmarks are a bit misleading as to the kind of power you need to run the game on High. My GTS 640MB was just running that game smoothly (didn't check the FPS deliberatly because you won't know on a console) at 720p with all High settings bar texture quality and shadow quality on medium which I figured were the two likeliest candidates for consoles to skimp on.

Odds are though most or all of the settings will be dropped back from "High" settings to some degree. Just not as far as going right down to medium.
