Crytek to showcase Cryengine 2 on consoles

I cant wait for this.

Seeing the CE2 take advantage of the strengths and workarounds on the weaknesses of the X360 and PS3 should be very interesting.

This wouldnt be a "only people who go to GDC will see it" type of thing would it?

Doubtful. Crytek wants money. Awareness for this is key. They have a challenge in surpassing iD's Tech 5 engine.

Yeah, I wonder how many studios are left looking for an engine after UE3 and Tech5.

I don't know ... Crytek's engine on PC is very, very complete, with some impressive editors and tools, and the engine is really impressive. I think UE3 and Tech5 definitely have some serious competition here.

Tech5 has instant multiplatform support, very streamlined and seemed reliable too. And both have their features tailored for consoles as well, like texture streaming in the background.

Not that Crytek couldn't add tech like that, but it's worth to remember that consoles aren't simply about state of the art rendering stuff, and if you're into licensing and engine then you'll look at it with a producer's eye. How easy to use, to modify, how much time you can spare etc. etc.

Well there is at least one released game that uses CryEngine 2. :)

I honestly don't know how big of a competition Tech 5 is right now, we haven't really seen much of it either.

Has anyone (besides the usual crowd) licensed it yet?

How long before there are console games using Tech5, which was only intro'd to the public last year?

Now Crytek is joining the game?

Wasn't UE3 shown in 2005 or earlier? It's only in the past year we've had UE3 games.

So what if Crytek games don't appear until 2010?

Maybe too late for this generation?

I would bet on the Wolfenstein game, but that's more secret than Area 51. :???:

As early as GDC 2004 I believe.

It might be a great alternative for PS3/PS4 if the price is right. We'll have to see. :)

I didn´t expect this so soon.

Great news for developers, more options to choose from, gotta love competition.

Edge was pretty impressed by the high level tool set of Crysis.

And, to quote QVC, that’s not all you get. Public SDKs and map editors might be a dime a dozen on PC, but never has such a huge leap in technology been accompanied, on day one, by such a complete creative toolset. Sandbox2, which even comes with Crysis’ demo, is a wonderful thing. Accessible, comprehensive and smart – for a complete forest, just group-select the brushes and drag one out – it’s the bonus feature you simply can’t ignore. Its potential for the creation of industry-standard user content is staggering. It is, ultimately, the making of a magnificent package.

If they are showing something now, I think they probably started quite some time ago?

I know they had some Ps3/360 devkits to play around with during the development of Crysis...
But Crysis was only released like 3-4 months ago (I think)...
Dunno how many people would be on the team now, but poor pc sales sealed the deal for a console game...

It didn't actually sell that badly at all for a PC game. Sales were low but no lower than your average non sims/WoW game.

I would expect console sales to be much better though. Unfortunatly it seems action games (including FPS's) are the realm of consoles these days with PC's only holding on to RTS's and MMORPG's. Thats in terms of sales btw, not the actual library which is still ok on the PC for the time being.

I'm definatly keen to see the results of CE2 on consoles. I wonder if they will be using Crysis assetts or something completely different?

There's good chance it won't be Crysis at all, so talk of them porting to consoles to get sales is premature. What they'll be showcasing is their engine and tools. Content might be something else entirely.

It's too bad a new Turok is already developed; a dinosaur game from Crytek would have brought them back to how they started too! But let's see... how many puns can we make with "Cry"..... :p

Crysis on consoles i.e. reuse of existing assets would be a financial move. Even though sales might have been respectable compared to other non-cash-cow properties on PC, the main thing should be whether or not they actually broke even in revenue. Did they :?:

CryTek also have the Kiev and Budapest studios working on new IP. Those could be for consoles, and they could show off something early there (something new and not old ;)), much like how id Software unveiled id Tech5.

I keep hearing this but so far haven't seen any solid figures to show exactly how well this game has done?

How many units has thisa game sold so far? 100k? 300k? 1m?

Granted PC sales across the board may not be great for non MMO/Sims/Valve IP but you can't judge the success of a product (saleswise) off how well the rest of the market is doing..

Let's face facts here people, Crysis + engine wasn't a cheap venture for a company like Crytek & so unless they could really see a solid ROI saleswise, they're probably looking at the IP being pretty much a failure.. How many units do they need to sell to break even? who knows but IMO I *really* wouldn't call anything less than 500k "respectable" at all..

On another note even if they did choose to bring Crysis to consoles, there's a pretty big danger that sales could STILL stink for a number of reasons..:-

- Visual downgrade would put off alot of gamers who may decide to wait until they can upgrade there PC or may have already bought/downloaded it..
- Competition against the wake of console shooters up-&-coming would be fierce (KillZone2, Resistance 2, Gears 2, Bioshock 2 etc..) & without the game's biggest selling point (gfx) behind it, there's a massive risk of the title getting overshadowed by games which bring more to the table in other areas (i.e. gameplay etc..)
- Time difference between initial release & console release could affect sales negatively..
- Less than "stellar" PC sales could also affect console sales negatively..

Anyways i'm getting off topic here..

However if anyone has got any concrete sales data to justify this general consensus that Crysis sales "weren't bad" then I would love to find out in a PM..

/offtopic..

I remember Cevat saying something before about Crytek doing some things on the PS3 SDK that "isnt" related to CE2 so I wonder what that could be?

For the first time, we will finally see how CE2 will push console hardware and in turn, the result will generate heated discussions (related to a certain Crytek IP ;) ) on message boards everywhere.

Hurry up GDC
