contrast that with here over the ditch in NZ, where the wii is sitting firmly in last place

actually NZ is a console aberration (i believe the 2 following statements are true)

#A/ the only country in the world where the xbox360 is first
#B/ the only country in the world where the wii is last

GFK Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of Xbox 360 hardware rose 32 per cent over the weekend of Microsoft's latest price reduction.

In comparison, sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 were down eight per cent on the previous weekend.

Last night, Microsoft announced that sales of the Xbox 360 have hit six million units across Europe. Microsoft's latest aggressive hardware pricing now puts the Arcade Xbox 360 unit at GBP 129.99 in the UK, making it the cheapest of the current generation home consoles.

32% ... hmm, ouch. I guess it may take a while before people notice in Europe. Any real effects will have to show themselves during the holiday season.

They have another article that states SW:FU on 360 accounted for 48% of its sales dispite being released on 6 platforms. I'm guessing , 360, wii , ps3 , ds , psp and ps2 ? If so thats amazing for europe

A 32% spike seems pretty small to me. MS are going to need to grow interest. The Arcade is a full £50 cheaper than Wii. Looking at the interest in Wii at its price, XB360 selling less shows the market hasn't as much interest, regardless of price. Christmas will be the most interesting time, if people looking for a games machine are wooed by the price-point or not.

From the links in the article :
The Xbox 360 SKU accounted for 48 per cent of all sales, while 30 per cent of units sold were on the PlayStation 3 and 15 per cent on the Wii. The remaning sales were split between PS2, PSP and DS.
This is in the UK only, where AFAIK XB360 outnumbers PS3.

How is that bad? Sales in UK were already healthy (which country I believe this news covers). The pricecut came into life on Friday, was announced on Wednesday, so it's drained like sales were drained weeks before because everybody knew there would be lower price points. Te price cut wasn't that substantial, there was no crucial software released last week and finally the pricecut wasn't advertised in TV etc.* Taking all of the above into account, while 32% up is definitely not a big success story, it's hardly a reason to be worried either.

*apparently big marketing campaign is kicking in this week, I wonder how exactly they're going to promote the console

The price cut wasn't that substantial...
That' rather a subjective point though. It dropped by %20, from >£150 to <£150. On the old price versus demand curve, where would we expect that to place XB360 compared to £160? And how would we expect that to be reflected in an initial sales spike? I doubt anyone has real answers, only gut feelings. If the sales increase is 30% sustained, that'd be good. If that initial jump levels out to something much lower, it's not so good.

It's called market buzz and trend. Enthusiasts are generally too wrapped up in their hobby to understand this concept and thus ponder endlessly.

The mass consumer buzz is focused around the Wii. The 360 or the PS3 can do all the dances they want (cutting prices, cool games, features, etc...) but as long as the "Wii" is the toy to have, they're powerless.

The "dance" will win over some consumers but expecting a shift in mentality isn't going to happen. Look at Ipod vs other players for a prime example. When people think of portable music player, the ipod is the association they have towards it. The Wii is becoming that for gaming. Last generation, it was the PS2. The Xbox and the Gamecube could do all the dances they wanted but the PS2 was the face of gaming. The Wii is that this generation.

MS and Sony don't even talk about Nintendo in their PR anymore. They just keep the battle between themselves. They've accepted it. Time to jump in....

Shifty thanks for the correction on it being UK only. Its still good numbers consider the sheer number of other platforms it was released on. I would think the sales of the wii and ds are multiple times that of the xbox 360 console. But to see the 360SKU do so well is amazing.

I didn't realize the price drop in UK was that big, I thought it was around 15% range like in the rest of Europe (200 -> 170 euro). Even then, I don't think initial spike was disappointing, but we've got to wait and see what the situation is like in the long run. Too bad GFK doesn't (openly) provide hardware sales data like NPD does, the only indication of situation will be Microsoft's boasting and later on shipment breakdown for the next quarter.

Well I was uncertain of the drop as I didn't know what it was starting at, but this is the news I found :

The price drop of the Xbox 360 from Microsoft is expected to drop by £30 making that only £129.99 for the gaming console.
...that listed the starting price (£159.99 at time of the article) and amount reduced.

That's right, the Arcade has been £159.99 since March IIRC (there was a big marketing push after that price drop, it was plastered all over buses here in London) and now it's £129.99.

UK RRPs are now:
360 Arcade £129.99
360 Premium £169.99
Wii £179.99
360 Elite £229.99
PS3 80Gb £299.99

New figures from data specialist GfK Chart Track have revealed the current installed base for console hardware in the UK.

As of September 2008, the PlayStation 3 has reached 1.4 million units, the Xbox 360 2.3 million and the Wii 3.6 million units.

The numbers show considerable growth from 2007 – both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have shifted a million units since the same period last year when their installed base was 0.4 million and 1.3 million, respectively.

However, it's Nintendo's Wii that has boomed in the region, from 1.1 million units in September 2007 to the current 3.6 million units.
