So in the UK, the PS3 isn't catching up to the 360 anymore - instead they're selling about 1:1. Interesting. PS3 really does need a price cut there if it wants to catch up.

They're selling 1:1 in total over the past year. From the bits of data we get I suspect 360 has been ahead for a while ( a few chart track datas have stated this in the last few months), solidified by the latest price drop.

It seems 360 is taking a good grip on second place in the UK currently. Rather than succumbing that position.

All this 1st 2nd and 3rd place talk depends on how long the life cycle of each of the consoles end up being. Looking at total sales since launch is useless in deciding current places, in fact having a "current" 1st 2nd and 3rd place is totally pointless in the first place. 360 could be doing well and keeping a very good grip on 2nd or being doing very badly depending on what the lifecycle and sales curve ends up being, which is obviously a totally unknown variable.

Sorry for the little rant i just find the whole idea of having a "current" 2nd place a bit silly.

Here's the last year in price terms in the UK:

[The early fall in the PS3 line is the introduction of the 40Gb, replacing the 60Gb (the 60Gb continued to sell until stocks ran out, but I have no idea how long that process took). The spike in the PS3 line in late August indicates the introduction of the 80Gb over the 40Gb (the price remained the same; the spike is for illustration purposes only). A similar spike indicates the switch from 20Gb to 60Gb Pro 360s.]

To add some context around the March 360 price cut, see this article. Therefore as Rangers said, the 360 must have been ahead recently to make that back up. The recent further price cut will only increase their sales advantage.

Microsoft has said that sales of the Xbox 360 have doubled in the past two weeks, outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 by two-to-one.

According to Chart- Track figures, sales were up 214 per cent in the past two weeks, in the wake of a price cut across the European region.

...

Although Microsoft's claims are backed by Chart Track's data, the company stopped short of detailing exact unit sales for the period.

Interesting that their numbers have doubled and it moved them to outselling ps3 by 2:1. That would suggest they were selling on par before the price drop.

That would be true if PS3 sales stayed at the same level. Last week that was not the case.
"[360] sales are up 32 per cent and PlayStation 3 sales are down eight per cent," confirmed Chart-Track's Chris Poole.

I wonder how much the current state of the economy helped MS to maintaining the lead against Sony in Europe. I bet if the economy was better it wouldn't be the case...

He's speaking of fiscal year.

A pretty conservative target, about the same as last year for PS3, and one of the big clues PS3 was not going to get a price drop.
Ok I completely missed his point... thanks for clearing that :)

That's right, the Arcade has been £159.99 since March IIRC (there was a big marketing push after that price drop, it was plastered all over buses here in London) and now it's £129.99.

UK RRPs are now:
360 Arcade £129.99
360 Premium £169.99
Wii £179.99
360 Elite £229.99
PS3 80Gb £299.99

Yeah, last weekend i had a chance to checkout prices at the local EB. I still can´t understand how the 360 with harddrive and HDMI can be cheaper than a Wii. And next to those the PS3 was standing there.. looking awesome and very expensive :)

Ohh and i noticed a used 60GB PS3 (the limited BC version) was priced higher than a new PS3 :)
