Consistant / Reliable European / Other sales data source?

On the pre-order top lists I have seen, even the PS3 version of GTA4 is ahead of the 360 version. I have a hard time to comprehend this, seems like some hard-core Playstation gamers are just a bit late to join the next-gen party.
When their next gen platform of choice was priced £100 more than they cared to pay, that's not surprising!

Flew through CDG a couple of days ago, In Terminal 2E at least, there are several PS3 kiosks for travelers waiting to board their flights. They have demos on the HDD but unless you're familiar with how to launch and quit out of games to get in and out of the XMB, it might be tricky for people unfamiliar with the system to use it.

They didn't have anything on there that PS3 users who've been downloading demos haven't seen.

But this may just be another data point in how SCEE is maintaining a higher brand profile in the EU compared to the competition.

In related news, apparently Sony has lost exclusive F1 license and Codemasters are suppose to be using their Grid engine to make F1 games? Some enthusiasts suspect Codemasters may try to make the game more accessible and less sim.

Does this mean Sony will no longer sponsor F1 events? Are they going to sponsor Euro 2008 starting this week?

Some data has been released for France by the organisation GFK (which I think is pretty seious):
http://www.jeuxvideo.fr/france-wii-tete-ps3-x360-actu-145884.html
Link in french but numbers are self explanatory:
Wii ~1,8 million units
Ps3 ~800 000 units
360 ~700 000 units

I wonder I f Sony will have managed to catch up with the 360 in Europe at the end of this month (as they planned).
France is a huge market and pretty much pro Sony.
In UK Ms still looks ahead of Sony.

Ms may have bought some more time before Sony catch up.
I think it should happened by this fall, but who knows.
Ms has some room to adaptdepending on:
change (pricing)
line up quality (if some titles deliver as intended)
a functionnal wiimote like device
end if they manage to show that the jasper revision is really solid, they may regain some mindshare among trend making persons (internet guys, vendors, etc.)

EDIT Rekator stole the show...

I think it is the price to blame the most. I checked console prices at PLAY.com and the price difference between the two consoles is large!
I wasn't trying to explain why Sony may have miss (or is likely) its goals ;)

But at this stage MS advantage is clearly the price, in Europe the 360 is pretty cheap.

It will be intersting to see if MS did better than expected or if Sony under deliver, at this stage I have no clue.

I think Ms if they don't mess with execution may have a ticket to keep the situation in a statuquo in Europe (read close to parity as far as installed base as concerned) for some more time.

I know you didnt

I just wanted to add something :)

Some new and "historical" data here:
first we have the Sony statement about taking the lead in Europe
It was the 6th of may:
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=137142

Ms denial came quiet sometime after:
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/microsoft-xbox-360-ahead-of-ps3-in-europe/
(I remember reading this on gamesindustry.biz too, but I don't manage to find the news/article)

Sony wait even longer to reveal that they have missed their sales figures:
http://fr.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idFRDEC67943320080716

Thus Sony had sold at the end of marsh 9.24 millions units while predicting 11 millions.

So we have datas for North america, Japan, time to extrapolate ;)

EDIT
I don't know if there a thread about ps3 sales still opened, and this news (9.24 millions) may be worse a thread but I not sure I want to give mods extra work...

PS3 passed Xbox 360 in Norway in march. I think its passed the X360 in scandinavia aswell..

When i was out shopping (found a cheap Riiidge Racer!) i noticed that XBOX 360, which used to have best placements and largest space on shelfs was demoted to where the PS3 used to be. I guess that explains why.

Hardly a data source, a friend of mine just went to the UK, after not being able to find a PS3 in Denmark she figured it would be easy enough in the UK. She nearly gave up, the places she asked couldn´t say when they would have one. She got lucky on her way home and bought one at the airport :)

Is this because of selling like hotcakes or is it because the 80GB version in incoming...

This might help explain:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/40gb-playstation-3-stock-in-short-supply

Sounds like they didn't want to get in a position of discounting 40 giggers, the question is can they move up the 80gb release if they run out completely.

Opposite of topic since it's a completely unreliable data source... but in Australia it's extremely hard/nigh impossible to find a PS3 right now, since Sony are stockpiling for their "free PS3 with a Bravia" deal. This bumped sales last time they ran the promotion by a fair way.

According to a couple of guys that frequents another messageboard I am on, there seems to be none to very few PS3 available in Norway also. One of the guys works in retail chain that sells consoles and they are out of stock and he says the demand is quite high.

People I've spoken to are importing PS3s because it's just a matter of swapping the power cable for any old "kettle jug plug", and they're so cheap thanks to the Aussie dollar.

Same in finland too. Also cheap netstores seem to be sold out.
