CES 2006 News & Announcements

As it's software, it'll be more flexible than traditional players... This ASIC by Sigma Design for the Pioneer BD player is only able to decode 2 HD streams while Cell can decode 12. Advanced audio codecs are also handled in software on Cell. Then RSX on top of that. It's terrific.

in laymans terms, what advantage does 12 hd streams vs 2 have?

sorry for the dumb question:oops:

I'll tell you what, if I saw that many superballs coming at me, I'd run like hell.

That Sony Reader looks pretty spiffy, might I add.

LOL, I think I'd have a heart attack! What a bizzarre thing to get caught up in that would be!

Depends on your TV UI. We may not want to get stucked on the old TV navigation mechanisms do we ? Am I the only one who hates the current TV menus and program guides ?

Nope I hate them too.

"9:20 Kaz Hirai (prez Sony America) comes out and does LOONNNNG boilerplate clearly designed to give us time to clear the memory stick on our camera for ... yes, a Playstation 3 demo trailer! Pix coming, but they won't do it justice. "

Some new footage, hopefully..

Toshiba is making plans for a Blu-Ray player!

According to a report I just saw on CNBC's PowerLunch a couple of mins ago....maybe the reporter's got it wrong....

As patsu eluded to, it opens up the opportunity to have a new navigation scheme, and also to have PIP for more than 2 channels. With this world, you can never have too much power.

And there's no such thing as a dumb question, only dumb people who don't ask questions.

Link please?

I'm listening to it now on XM - I had to pause for a bit. I'll let you know. I can rewind and listen to it again if there's confusion.

so what was all the hype and bs about ps3 being 'more than a game machine'-Where are all these features that make it more than a game machine, what is it doing to compete with the 360's multimedia capabilities?
It'll support, along with games, movie playback, audio playback, supposedly CONNECT support, access to flash memory (3 types) where it can read and play audio, pictures and video, and video conferencing with EyeToy (these are the features thus mentioned AFAIK). The only difference XB360 is is streamed content from a PC which needs a $500 'peripheral' as it were.

and 'no HDD will ever be big enough'? Big enough for what?
Buying and downloading movies. If a BluRay movie fills 50 Gb, a 500 Gb HDD is only good for ten movies. I think I own more movies than that and I rarely buy the things! Most people have dozens, even hundreds, so the idea of purchasing movies and hidef content needs bigger HDD than anyone has. No HDD is big enough. KK didn't want to include a 120 Gb HDD at that added extra cost if it's not able to support the features he wants from his baby, seems to me. VoD needs 50 Megabit sustained broadband. The UK's just rolling out 8 megabit, and when you include contention it's likely you won't even get that sustained. VoD isn't going to happen for yonks on any system (outside of Korea!) because the infrastructure's not there, so anyone promising it who isn't a cable or satellite TV company is just lying.
These are non game-related, and you would think they would talk it up at CES if they truly had anything exciting to say.
Firstly give them time. We've barely got Stringer's keynote yet! Maybe in a day or two they'll doa focus on PlayStation and it's features. Secondly a fair bit of this has been announced already. And thirdly I feel sory for Sony because they seem stuck between a rock and a hard place. I know on this forum we've had people look at PS3 announcements of intended features and say 'yeah, right, they promsied all that for PS2 but where is it?' and yet we also have 'they've made no announcements so they aren't really having any functionality.' If Sony this time are being more cautious and not making promises they can't keep this time around, but are working on the solutions (like this) and will announce them when ready, they still get an earful!

I don't have a link, that's why I'm thinking it was a cock-up by CNBC.

No it wasn't, I just listened to it on my XM CNBC feed - confirmed to have been on CNBC and presented in the proper context.

This is the rough quote:

"But even these technology giants are hedging their bets... reports are coming out that not only is Toshiba launching their five-hundred dollar HD-DVD player this Spring, but is also working on a high-definition player that plays their rival's format... And this shows the level of uncertainty right now in the market for these new high definition standards..."

That's my paraphrasing. I will listen to it again and put down an EXACT quote.

I am also having Power Lunch DVR at home, so later tonight I can possibly put the video clip of their HD-DVD vs Blu-ray segment up as well.

Engadget has a blurry pic of what is presumably a Gran Turismo game, which is what Kaz Hirai presumably showed.

Looks different from the GT glimpses shown at E3.

Oh and did anyone notice Michael Dell himself was on stage with Stringer to tout Blu-Ray?

MS hasn't come up with enough cash.:devilish:

It looks like another GT Vision trailer. Who knows if it is new or not, though. My guess is that at best we'll get a mix of new and old stuff.

It was presented in a proper context your right, but it could still be an error. I had to do a double take with Sky+ to make sure I wasn't hearing things the first time I saw it!

PowerLunch has got great CES coverage as ever.

that's what I'm saying. If they plan on actually doing this, wouldn't this be the right time to unveil it? Otherwise it was just a load of crap, like the AOL/instant messenger on PS2, pie in the sky fantasy talk.

btw, a 1.5hour movie at 16mbps using VC-1 is 10gb, so a 500gb HDD could be enough for 40 or 50 movies, and lets be honest, you won't be download 50GB of anything for many years...

Sounds like a Hybrid player, not BR.

Yeah PowerLunch is bar none in CES coverage, year after year. :)

Ok I have the exact quote now:

"...And just to show you how everyone is hedging their bets in this race, Toshiba isn't only making a $500 HD-DVD machine, it's also announcing plans to make machines in Sony's Blu-ray format..."

So, could be a dual-format player as Scooby posited, or could not. But it's interesting news.
