CES 2006 News & Announcements

If Sony truly has a plan for VoD and other multimedia related functionality online and offline with the PS3, shouldn't we be hearing about it at CES?

Not necessarily..at least I wouldn't think so. Demoing Blu-ray playback I suppose for me was surprising, but at least in the context of the importance of the show to Blu-ray it's understandable.

Yes, it's I'M A NAUGHTY BOY! sense after the fact. But just read the first five pages of the "No PS3 at CES" thread and you'd think you just stepped in the twilight zone. The Sony apologists were out in full force AS IF Sony officially announced that the PS3 would be a CES no show. Apparently, showing Blu-Ray and all other non-gaming functions at the PS Conference and E3 was a better idea...

That thread was a mix of 'Sony making killer uber PS3 showing at CES' + 'if Sony don't have a killer uber PS3 showing it means PS3 will be delayed' + 'Yeah they'll show PS3, but not make a huge deal of it. Maybe show it's BluRay stuff and some of the E3 trailers'.

Regards non-gaming plans for PS3 online, this isn't a 1 day event and all and every plan for PS3 doesn't have to have been announced so far, plus they may be saving those for the PS event too, or even not have clear plans as such to talk about beyond what they've already mentioned because to be frank, VoD was never a listed feature IIRC as it needs internet bandwidth more than fancy hardware, and that's something Sony can't provide. For the features they can provide with already got news reports and announcements, such as the soon to be released Video from CONNECT.

Has RSX taped out!?

yeah I have a feeling the people running these booths might not even be able to answer that. Crap the line is backing up at this terminal I'll check back in later.

I'll visit Sony's booth. I see alot of banners for Toshiba HD DVD. I'll try and check out both in action.

What would be the harm of Sony releasing the RSX details in the next couple months? The Xbox 360 is already out and we know that the Revolution will be the weakest of the three.

Seismo some announcement was made (but non-official source) saying that all of Toshiba's new TV's in 2006 will be using Cell. Can you check that out and verify? Also see if you can catch a glimpse of their SED sets while you're there. ;)

so what was all the hype and bs about ps3 being 'more than a game machine' and 'no HDD will ever be big enough'? Big enough for what?

Where are all these features that make it more than a game machine, what is it doing to compete with the 360's multimedia capabilities? These are non game-related, and you would think they would talk it up at CES if they truly had anything exciting to say.

It may lack the impact if they leak news along the way. I'm not privy to PS3 timetable specifically, but in general you should control your PR like the volume knob on your hi-fi.

If something is leaky, no one may write about your items even when you desparately need to "pump up the volume". Given that the gaming early adoptors are highly technical in nature RSX info should remain hidden until the appropriate time to shape the consumers' mind.

Keep it on topic, if you can, please. This thread is getting a distinct taste of many other threads we've already been through. If you want to ask the whys and the wherefores of what will or won't be announced, and when, that "No PS3 at CES" thread would probably suit better.

Why do people care about VOD?

Over at AVS, some people have already tried Vongo and declared that the quaity is definitely less than DVD.

Plus a lot of the movies there are apparently available for free on Comcast In Demand.

We want HD movies, not sub-DVD quality movies.

I'll check it out. Show still isn't open yet but people are lining up. Just peeking inside I can see an enormous TV running Perfect Dark 0 and it says "1080p" next to it. I'm not sure what it is.
By the way speaking of banners Sony is totally dominating it seems that they're promoting some kind of "e-entertainment" I need to see what that's all about.

Ok I'm heading in...

The same reason people care about iTunes?
