'Certain “highly anticipatedâ€￾ Xbox 360 title filling four discs worth of space'

Though the article is unclear, the impression I got is it's about a game which was at X05. An unannounced JRPG can't be a "highly anticipated title".
So why can't it be Lost Odyssey? Or Blue Dragon? Or Enchant Arm? Or what about the 3rd unannounced Mistwalker title that's in development?

Just because it hasn't been publically announced, doesn't mean it can't be highly anticipated.

There's no way you come even close to 4 discs without MASSIVE amounts of CG, it's just that simple. Take away the CG and audio from most games today and they're like 800mb.

That's the point that figure is for today's games. Not tomorrow's.

The point is the actual game engine's and textures are pretty miniscule, they can grow 4 or 5x's over and still be relatively small.

Can you find out how much space your Xbox 360 games use?

Oblivion uses the full dl dvd disc space. They said half of its for sound (music , voices , suond effects)

Oblivion looks next gen to me .

Even if we increase the size of last gen games to 4x the amount they should still all fit on 2 dual layer dvds .

The only thing that has really increased that much over last gen is video. From 480i to 720p video.

Remember from last gen to this gen there are whole new compression schemes everythign from textures to sound have new compresion tech .

jvd can we keep last gen out of these discussions please? So, you are saying Oblivion for the Xbox 360 using the full DVD?

Most Xbox\PC dev's were able to use realtime cutscene instead of blowing a tons and tons $$$$ on worthless CG artists\animators, I'd rather see that money spent somewhere usefull like the technology behind the game and to make the game longer or add online. Somthing to add value to the game instead of waste my time.

Do you also think it's ok for EA to use CG in their COD commercials and pass it off as gameplay as well?

Yes , half of it being devoted to sound .

We still don't know how well the title uses the new compresion schemes that are in the xbox . As they have only had finished hardware for 4 months .

The only reason why u will see games use more than 1 or 2 discs is if they have huge amounts of speech in the game or if they use large amounts of cgi .

Lets also not forget that 2 dvd dls will be cheaper than a single blueray disc for a long time .

Yet alot of PS2 games do use CG and they did sell well. And I think you don't mean EA when you say Call Of Duty commericals. But I see your point and I freaking hate it to death.

I hate cgi myself . Its cool for a nice opening or whatever. But in game i don't want to cut to really nice cgi and then back to game graphics .

Anyway

4 disc games sold really well ( i think ff 8 was 4 discs) back in the psone era . People didn't seem to care . So i doubt two disc games will really bother people

Then again there is that other tech that allows 14gigs on a dvd . Dunno if the xbox is capable of it . But that can be another route if they want to go that way . 14gigs is abotu the same as 2 dl dvds .

I really don't know whats going on with that tech as some say most new dvd players just need firmware and others say its impossible. So we will have to see how that works out

No wya to know right now, but the 360 port of kong for PC is ~5GB. XBOX version is just under 3 I believe, I can check that when I get home.

Also it should be noted that the last elder scrolls game came at the beginning of the XBOX generation, but it was a good indication of the average game size over the next 4 years, I believe it was around 3.5GB which ended up being larger than the majority of games released up until now.

EA is using CGI to promost COD: Big Red One, Brothers in Arms is doing teh same thing...however I have a secret theory that the BIA commercials are actually using the next-gen engine..some of the textures don't look CG quality, and according to the secret BIA video showed a few months ago the characters are EXTREMELY lifelike....so ya that's my secret theory...

Seeing actual gameplay in a commercial for a game is the exception rather than the rule these days.

I know, that's been MS's reasoning behind showing very little actual gameplay in any of their promotions. They say consumers have been fed CG for so long, they won't be impressed by fancy commercials, and won't believe it's actually realtime (i.e. they'll pass it off as just another CG commercial)

For disc space, I think the fact elder scrolls 4 managed to fit on one disc should pretty much seal the debate about whetehr disc space is a problem. If elder scrolls can fit, then I would expect 95% of all other games to have no problem.

No that's your theory. A good theory, but by no means a fact. We will see in the next year or so.

Whats your theory ?

You do know that there is a very strong chance that a single layer bluray disc will cost more and most likely be harder to make (less disc lines up than standard dvds) than 2 dl dvds .

dunno about you guys, but id rather have 1 big disc than 4 little ones. if i have to pay 5-10 dollars extra, so be it. i hate those pc games that come on 4-5 discs. dvd version ftw! :p

Yah tell me about it. When Riven (Myst 2) was released it came on 4 discs and was very annoying. Apparently there was a special edition DVD version out there and it came on 1 DVD disc.

I will be willing to pay the premium if it means no disc swap. As a gamer I'm too lazy to get up and swap discs.

I would rather have one disc as well, but if it means paying $10 for it? Screw that, I'm not THAT lazy, I AM that cheap though :p

btw:
king-king XBOX = 1.4GB
King Kong PC - 1.8GB on disc
360 > PC port = 5GB on disc
