Call of Duty 4: Modern combat trailer up

French review (jeuxvideo): 8.5 (17/20)

Their main complaint is length of single player campaign, which for them was 5 hours only. They also complain that too many textures don't look so hot up-close, and that the physics has its limits in weird ways - e.g. you can shoot through a wall, but that same wall is unaffected when a granade blows up next to it.

The five hours that are there though are highly rewarded and in parts rival the intensity of a series like 24 (at least in the beginning). They also love the sound.

They reviewed the PS3 version.

5 hours?! Next-gen seems all about shrinking game times!

I dunno about that. Quite a few GOTY 2007 nominees in my mind are quite long.

Bioshock - 15+ hours
Mass Effect - 30 hours (main quest)
Assassin's Creed - 18 hours (main quest)

No doubt 5 hours is too short for a game like this, but you could certainly argue that the depth they've added for Multiplayer makes the $60 well worth it, if you're into that sorta thing.

A lot of game time is dependent on the player and certain games allow you to get through very quickly if you ignore everything but the main plot and just charge through to mandatory objectives.

5 hours, as only a single player game would be pretty much unacceptable to me (although side missions could compensate) but if you have coop and mp you add a lot of play for most people.

5 hours is slim, but it is predominantly meant to be an online game, right?
Do you have to pay to play on the consoles online?

Call of Duty 2 didn't seem particularly long either on the normal difficulty at least. On the harder difficulties, I found myself taking much longer to complete the game.

Do you have to pay to play on the consoles online?

On Xbox, you have to pay $50USD per year to play online.

Ouch! Is that just for CoD4?
The PC version is free online, right? Hmmm...might have to go the PC route.

No. $50 a year is the price (regular price you can get it for $40 and you actually get 13 months first time) for xbox live this includes all games and all live features.

Ya, and there's no need to pay for a whole year if you're only going to play it for a few months.

So are there a lot of online maps and variety?

Apparently this game has pretty deep RPG elements to it's online multiplayer. New weapons, armor, upgrades depending on how long you've played and what level you've reached.

Also, many new twists on the formula, for example, after 5 straight kills you earn the ability to call in an airstrike, stuff like that...

5 hrs does seem a little sort, like they didnt try to do much just rush it, but I am happy with games that take 8-10 hrs in single player, Bioshock was great, but 10 hrs as long as the experience is a good one is worth it for me.

Sure it's a little on the short side, but I'll take 5 good hours over 10-15 crappy hours.

I hope it is as "run and gun" as CoD2 was. I loved that game. It was never boring because the action never let up.

5 hours is below the "short and sweet" mark for me, and into the "not worth it" category. I appreciate the online component looks kick-ass, but 5 hours is terrible for a full priced game.

I guess the other way to look at it is, for your dollar, both Halo3 and Orange Box look to provide much more single player content, along with solid super online experiences. They're different games, but it really does feel like a rush job.

I'm still yet to finish CoD2 actually. Damn Veteran difficulty *shakes fist*

what a dissapointment, 5hr is just not my style, i'll pick up AC instead. seriously i agree with PARANOiA, im not willing to pay full price for such a short game.

On the 5 hours, Gametrailers I think said it well when they pointed out some of the additional SP options like Arcade mode and their advanced difficulties if you want to replay SP. Arcade mode is complete old school NES style scoring. Time limit, combo streak scoring, limited lives, etc.

While 5 hours is short, the game has a pretty robust MP. 16 maps and 6 modes (TDM, Search&Destroy, Domination, etc) as well as gameplay modifiers like "hardcore" (which takes away most of the HUD and makes the bullets far more deadly). On top of that you have all the classes, perks, and loadout customizations within a fairly quick "rank up" system (unlike BF2).

If you are a SP only gamer, then this is probably a rental unless you really like what CoD does (and CoD is definately one of the better SP FPS on the market in terms of quality). But if you are a MP gamer at all I don't think there is even a question.

I know I am picking it up this week.
