Beyond: Two Souls

I got my copy today. I thought I'd ordered a regular copy but I got a steel book special edition!

I've played a little bit and it left me wanting more so that's good. I like being able to use my tablet as the controller. That's one feature I'm looking forward to with the PS4.

I finished my first play through yesterday. I give it 9/10. Overall I liked Heavy Rain a bit more, but it's very very beautiful, it has a little more action but much better pacing, I loved the non-linear order, some scenes are outstanding and better than anything that was in HR (no spoilers). On the bad side, there was a large part of the story and themes that I thought were disagreeable and conflicting with my views. Up to the point where I stopped caring about most of the characters toward the end.... I was continuously fighting against the grain, and most of the choices were forced in the opposite direction. but it still deserves 9/10, because disagreeing with some fundamental themes doesn't allow me to criticize the game itself. The creators obviously believed in it, and I want more of that rare kind of game, where they have something to express. I'll play another game with different paths, see what happens.

This game seems surprisingly forgotten, despite the years upon years of endless hype we've had to endure...

Not so much forgotten as being busily played, if my PSN list is representative of the PS gaming community. Currently there are no other games like this on any other platform, which is their loss. It's very refreshing to have an adventure of this calibre this late in the life of the console.

I must admit the graphics have surprised me a bit. After UC3 and TLoU I thought the tech couldn't really be pushed any further. But there are moments here that are making me pause for a bit to drink it in.

The PS3 is definitely the console experience to go for if you want to do more than just shoot things in the face.

What's so surprising ? :) The nextgen consoles are drawing a lot of attention, bad and good ones.

I am busier now compared to years ago. But I still remember to get a copy day 1. :devilish:

If you're a fan of interesting games, then you'll pay more attention to them. That is all.

"The Dark Sorcerer" video is stunning!!!
It looks much better than anything next gen that I have seed so far.
I can imagine that this will be the IQ of actual gameplay in 2-3 years, amazing!

How long was your playthrough?

Just finished the Condenser level, holy sh!t the graphics in there are insane for a current gen title. I wonder if any of the later levels could top that:)? But yeah I like some of the story segments which much like HR, conveyed genuine emotion to me. The reverse chronological narrative is interesting but can get a bit confusing at times though. Either way I'm hooked to this game more than any others right now.

Does it have dialogue choices like HR? Cos the demo totally lacked them. Can your failure lead to deaths of characters or different story branches? Please answer witgout any story spoilers as I have kept myslef allof from most of the info till now.

You can choose how to respond during dialogue. What the consequences of your choices are I don't know yet!

What Boardy said, also the dialog choices aren't nearly as frequent as in HR but I believe they most definitely lead to the 27 different endings.

Got it this morning, played a couple of hours:

- Graphics looks amazing, by far the best looking game on PS3 (even better than UC 2 / 3, Last of Us). If this is all rendered in-game.. Wow.. specially the faces look stunning. Some reviews complained about the animation of bodies, but look ok to me.
- It feels like you've less choices than Heavy Rain. Once in a while it gives you a choice, but when the game proceeds it doesn't feel like you influence a lot (could be mistaken).
- It feels not like an actual game, it's an interactive movie where you can play along (= the spirit) or do sometimes some kicking or moving objects.
- Great (voice) acting by Ellen Page.
- You ARE drawn into the story.
- Don't expect an action game, like said above the devs wanted to make an interactive movie.

Still, it's money well spent and a memorable experience, just like Heavy Rain a few years back.

Yep, this mirrors my feeling thus far. Gonna take my sweet time to finish this game.

3 sessions of about 4 hours, so maybe 12 hours? I didn't restart any chapters (living with the consequences of missed action sequences, just like I did with HR), but I was taking my time with exploration in the early chapters which wastes time and isn't really necessary.

Save points are very frequent within the chapters, there's almost no lost time for retrying something missed or quitting the game, but restarting a chapter can be 15 minutes or more.

Man oh man, played the homeless level. Incredible experience. I think that's what this game is all about. Forget the reviews. It's all about emotions, like HR. I was almost crying ;-)

And don't forget to close your mouth.. graphics are next-gen.. incredible they do this on hardware from 6-7 years ago.

That level was quite amazing, the graphics are quite sumptuous. I guess it's just taken this long to get the CELL to show it's stuff. It's almost ironic that the final generation of games on the PS3 look almost as good as the launch day games on the next generation. First time that's ever happened, though escape from butchers bay got quite close.

Oh yes, that was my favorite scene, it was amazing
In 25 years of playing games, I can count on one hand the number of times I had a lump in my throat, this is definitely one of those. (for some reason that makes 3 this generation, are we getting better games or I'm I getting more emotional?)
