Best HDMI 2.1 4K+ HDR TV for Consoles [2022]

I m really curious. I have a an LG B9 and despite the recommendation to use HGIG, I feel that, that setting mat be vroken. Its like HDR doesnt exist. I switch on and off the HDR on my console to see if there is a diffetence and I barely see anything if any.
Is there a chance that the problem is with my TV or is it sonething you gyys also observed?

so it works fine without HGIG, but with HGIG it looks like SDR?

maybe dynamic tone mapping is still active? try disabling it, and calibrate the source to match the TV spec.

My TV has Dynamic Tone Mapping: On, off and HGIG.
Dynamic Tone Mapping Off or HGIG from my TV, or choosing HDR Off from my console look exactly the same.
I am not sure what else is needed to calibrate.

I haven't used that setting myself, but according to this to get HGIG not only do you have to enable it, you have to calibrate HDR on your console AFTER enabling HGIG on the display or doing it with all tone mapping disabled before enabling HGIG. If you don't do that, then the tone mapping will be off. Basically if you had previous calibrated the HDR on the console with dynamic tone mapping then HGIG won't be able to adjust things correctly.

The most important thing is to have HGiG selected (or tone mapping disabled) before you go through the HDR calibration process on your console, otherwise the tone mapping will be incorrect.

I did try to recalibrate my console HGIG enabled but I still cant see difference. Something else must be going on that makes it look like HDR is just switched off.

edit: hmmm......maybe there is a difference but much much less pronounced

maybe firmware bug? 5.20.35 https://gscs-b2c.lge.com/downloadFile?fileId=tD260AYSfrzvzWm2pJpuSQ

anyway, after setting the proper HDR nits on system level, the easiest to test HDR is working or not is by playing cyberpunk 2077 (or any game that allows to set paper nits). set the max nits to your tv max nits, then set the paper white to minimum nits. if the HUD and menu then become darker than outdoor at noon, the HDR works.

Oh my firmware is updated fully. Should I reinstall you think?
I dont have Cyberpank but that sounds an interesting way to test

i think xbox hdr setting also have that. so the image on the left is SDR and should be dimmer than the image on the right that's HDR.

Esit

Turns out it's on windows 14 hdr settings not on Xbox

when you talk about the image on the left, are you referring to the HDR test/calibration of the consoles main settings?

Yes and I was misremembering. It's on windows 11 instead of on Xbox. On xbox both images are bright. It's just that the left image can be clipped while right image is not clipped (because it's been calibrated)

it seems I'm banned from /r/oled subreddit. all my posts there got instantly removed. I wonder if ppl here have this experience, i have this question:

Does your LG OLED become filled with horizontal lines when you interrupted its auto pixel refresh routine?

my LG CX has no indicator when it does auto pixel refresh so... yeah... impossible to know if it was doing pixel refresh or not (other than making sure to listen to a relay click sound after turning the tv off).

every time the auto pixel refresh routine was interrupted, the whole screen is filled with horizontal lines that last a few minutes to around an hour (it varies).

Does your LG OLED become filled with horizontal lines when you interrupted its auto pixel refresh routine?

Oh the thing is, how can we know if we interrupted it or not?
I never had the issue, but I dont think I ever accidentally interrupted it

Disable the fast startup (dunno this is required or not). Turn the TV off, and normally you'll hear a relay click.

When you didn't hear a relay click, quickly turn the TV on again. The TV will really turn off (relay click). Turn the TV on again.

Sometimes you'll see for less than half of a second, a horizontal white line moving vertically while the screen is black.

Either way, whether white horizontal line appeared or not, the TV then will have horizontal lines all over the screen.

So as yiu never see the horizontal lines, you either never interrupted it or I'm unlucky and got a bad unit. As I can't find anyone else with the issue and I can't ask around on oled reddit because it seems I'm banned there.

If anyone’s wondering, my A95K preorder has been delayed to mid July. Which actually is quite nice since I’m still waiting to see reviews from Vincent at HDTVTest and others. Seems the set has been delayed everywhere, annoyingly.

I hope this doesn't mean that Samsung is having either production issues or quality control issues with their OLED panels.

Hope it's more a sign of Sony getting their display controller functions and features absolutely perfected than it is about the panel.

Unfortunately Sony did a relatively poor job of pushing the qdo tech and instead just phoned it in with a qdo panel into an a90j. The positives like better uniformity, near black handling, color volume, pure whites, off axis are nothing Sony is doing and are just inherent benefits of qdo over woled.

Lets not get started on the Samsung s95b shit show. Hopefully next year everyone has more time and software maturation to really drive the panels.

In the meantime, I’m very happy with the AW but just as happy to sit out upgrading to a qdo as my main TV for this year.

Their blurb pretty much encapsulates my experience with text on a Sammy set as well as the Alienware monitor.

Since the issue is limited to one row of pixels you have to sit relatively close to the screen to spot it during normal use. We tested the 55-inch A95 and from our typical seating position 3.5 meters away it was not a problem but if you buy a larger QD-OLED, a QD-OLED monitor, or just move closer to the screen for gaming or other activities, you may want to check it out yourself before you hit the buy button. For text editing you have to be quite tolerant not to be bothered by the effect.

So, it might just be that I'll never be able to use a QD-OLED display as any set I get will serve double duty as a PC display.

SB

Damn, that bites. I was starting to think about looking at the Alienaware monitor for an upgrade to my ancient desktop display. I wonder how long it would take for WinOS or a third party to develop native TrueType-like support for QD-Oled. Or would it even improve things at all?

I remember when they had inverted pixels, like rgb vs rbg, and that helped a lot once it was supported.
