Artefacts on Xbox 360 Kiosk Machines

Someone sent us these pictures that they took at a Walmart. The games being played are Call of Duty 2, and Peter Jackson's King Kong. Notice anything strange?

...

Apparently the artefacts you can see came up during gameplay and also on the game menus. Note they were not present during video playback. Could the Xbox 360's be getting burnt out, do they need a reset, or is there some other explanation?

Problems with the GPU?

Wow, they're quite vicious artefacts. I guess XB360 suffers the same overheating as PS3, only at least PS3 is being postponed 2 years to deal wtih it.

Maybe heat problems in the kiosks.

That's the most likely explanation, given some of the reports we've heard of them just being shoved in with a bunch of games under them etc.
If they've been put into a small and enclosed space and then had most of their vents blocked I could see them overheating very easily.

Did they put too many ventilation holes on xbox360, so that they effectively kill the aircirculation, like if you run your PC without the side cover, it actually runs hotter than with the cover on because the air circulation is diffused.

Well from the pictures i've seen, the kiosks have a sort of transparent bowl cover thing enclosing the X360. I suppose there's not much air circulation in there. The thing might just get full of hot air, and circulating hot air around the place coesn't really help.

If the hardware burns 200+ W (some website claimed in excess of 250 at full load by measuring at the wall socket), that is naturally going to cause serious heat issues in a small enclosed space... My apartement goes up about 1.5-2 degree or so from powering on all my current stuff. Imagine x360, PS3 and Rev; omg. :)

btw, are there any European kiosks with actual games playable (besides the xbox arcarde ones). All the german ones I've seen only had videos...

Wow but to be artifacting...

I mean I can get my GPU (and do) to 90 C without any artifacts whatsoever. If it really is heat, and it really is the kiosk enclosure, they need to drill some holes in those things ASAP!

Yes.. postponed by 2 years. Sure thing.. :|

He was being sarcastic, after that article someone posted saying that PS3 is delayed until 2007/2008...
Doh! Sorry.. subtle humour lost on me today.. I blame work, combined with a lack of any kind of pie in the office.

Walmart doesn't have kiosks though. The system sits in the display case.

Those artifacts look just like the effect I get when I try to overclock my GPU.

Well, kiosk, display case, you know what I mean...

A transparent plastic enclosure. :)

By the way what temp does your GPU hit before you start seeing the artifacts? I mean I imagine the Xenos has to be getting HOT in there to be artifacting, because as I mentioned I can reach 90 C without artifacts.

That depends on the GPU. Some lots are going to be faster than others. I'm not sure about the temp but I can't overclock mine at all without seeing these artifacts. I probably have one that's just barely passing QA.

LOL, well actually I'm not pushing mine too far past spec or anything (taking a 6800 LE to GT levels is all), but I go passively cooled since it has a pretty big heatsink on it. Since I imagine that the Xenos is obviously running at spec, it's just the fact that it could be experiencing enough heat to screw it up like that that's shocking to me.

For you, you might need to pursue a volt mod to clock your GPU higher, assuming the temps are under control.
