^ That's not surprising.
The main stock shortage was from 3 reasons(other than high demand);

1 - Sony shipped some January stock by air in time for Christmas holidays, therefore lowing January availability.
2 - Chinese New Year.
3 - Japanese Launch.

They all are one off problems(CNY won't matter next year) so supply will be much better going forward.

Right behind TF 360 on Amazon's hourly list is the original version..

Titans Rule the Skies—These massive airborne carriers/warships serve as home bases. In the first-ever new gameplay mode in the Battlefield universe, teams must work together to destroy the enemy Titan.

Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition for $0.99!

amazon April 1-8 sales rankings: #4 PS4, #5 TF 360, #8 PS4 Camera, #14 Infamous, #17 XB1 TF bundle, #54 TF XB1

Tough week in Japan. apparently there was some new tax this week, so console purchases plummeted.

PS4 almost crossing streams with PS3.

Target seems to have removed the $50 Xone discount, it's back to 499 in store and online. Gamestop never had the sale as it's retailer driven and not from MS.

Wal Mart, Amazon, and Best Buy still have the discount it seems, for now. Hopefully Target will be forced to rejoin them.

Also, I saw two PS4's behind the glass at Wal Mart tonight. I may have, but at least I dont recall ever seeing PS4's at a Wal Mart before. Another sign of better availability I imagine.

PS4 availability was definitely much better in the second half of March, but I think it will be too late and fall a bit short of the XB1 in March's NPD next week. I think PS4 still comfortably outsold the XB1 worldwide though.

Honestly I've had no idea on March NPD for a while now. I guess I would go 60-40 or 70-30 towards X1 right now, but I could have a hunch a different direction tomorrow. A couple weeks ago I was strongly leaning Xbox, but I've decided it's basically 50-50 since.

You can see PS3 should overtake PS4 about week 10-11 launch aligned. They're even discussing that Japan market is basically dead, and what that means.

I think that was the shocker to me last gen. Going into the gen, while I was optimistic for 360, even I didn't think X360 could top PS3 (or ~tie if you wanna argue) worldwide because I assumed there was no way 360 could overcome a lot of PS3 sales in Japan. But those Japan PS3 sales ended up being quite lackluster, less than half of PS2. I didn't expect Japan falling off a console cliff.

Just want to make sure I am interpreting your post correctly: The fact that the PS3 sold better during the year end party season* which is the prime gift giving season in Japan than the PS4 is selling in the middle of April after a large tax increase is proof that the console market in Japan is dead?

I hate to say it, but I think something pretty obvious has been missing in this "launch aligned sales comparison".

*The PS3 launched the 11th of November, 2006 which means Christmas fell in week 7, while new years would have been week 9, so this is the middle of the gift giving season in Japan. As I recall, Japan doesn't celebrate Christmas as strongly as the US, but this is the season where people arrange parties and give each other gifts. Probably more towards New Years than on Christmas since Japan doesn't recognize Christmas as a national holiday.

I think Microsoft are taking a better approach to japan; Basically wait until you have a line-up the market wants before you launch.

Though it is a lost cause for MS, there is no room for a 3rd current gen console in that market.
They may not even be enough room for two.

Good catch. I was just repeating a Gaffer who didn't mention what you did and i didn't even think of it.

I guess there may be some value in the comparison regardless of time of year.

X1 needs serious help in Germany...(Only X1 title in charts Titanfall at #40)

This is probably why drastic price cut or otherwise (*cough* ditching Kinect for a bigger price cut *cough* )measures are needed, for those who think they are not.

I'm guessing PC is perhaps the dominant platform in Germany, since this is only retail sales, and I'm sure a huge portion of PC sales are digital.

PS4 is REALLY hitting stock. even checking local stores inventory usually shows PS4. Gamestop, Best Buy, even most Wal Mart's near me. And as I mentioned my last two trips to Wal Mart I've seen PS4's.

If it holds up April should show an even much less supply constrained picture for PS4 than March. In march We had Amazon, some other online, and some B&M and we started getting more brick and mortar but still choppy.

5in90DL.png

Sony must be REALLY pushing these out.

BTW I was able to check a couple wholesale prices across the supply chain recently. PS4 wholesales for ~$387, and by chance I was able to check 360 Kinect, it wholesales for about $95 against a $110 MSRP. So Kinect is a lot more profitable per dollar for a store than a stand alone PS4 console. Stands to reason I suppose, not only is it older, but it's more of an "accessory".

So, the new consoles are not providing more profit margin to retailers, if anything based on memory perhaps a little less (maybe because it's early and they are more in demand). I was not able to check an Xbox One at this time, but I'd guess it's a similarly slim margin to PS4.

Kinect is more profitable per dollar only when someone buys it. It doesn't matter if its wholesale is $1 and sells for $1000 if nobody buys it.

Profit and margins are in software and accessories. I wonder how many folks buy a new console but don't buy anything else with it.

Retailers have to carry low-margin items to shift high-margin items, any profit margin is critical for them. Amazon and GAME have lost sales due to me buying digital (AC4, Infamous Second Son, Tomb Raider DE, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Thief) vs disc (BF4, Killzone Shadow Fall). I'll be buying Watch_Dogs digitally too. Sorry retailers, waiting until 9am to go to a store or waiting for something to be delivered is in my history. Games ready to play at the crack of dawn are my future.
