PS4 (14 months) - 81.8 million software sales*
PS3 (14 months) - 51.4 million software sales**
PS2 (15 months) - 49.8 million software sales***
PS1 (28 months) - 98.0 million software sales****

*PS4 cumulative hardware sell through was 18.5 million
**PS3 cumulative hardware shipments were 10.5 million
***PS2 first 7 months were Japan only, total cumulative production shipments were 14.95 million (Japan = 40%)
So attach rates of:
PS4: 4.4
PS3: 4.7
PS2: 6.6

I'm sure digital has had some notable impact on recorded PS4 game sales though.

Hi Shifty Geezer,

Nice username haha.

The PS4 number already includes digital sales as noted in the original post. The reason for the varying attach rates is because the comparison isn't exactly like for like in that PS4 numbers are sell through but PS3 numbers are sell in etc... Also the PS2 had a large 7 month headstart in Japan and therefore had more game software titles available early on during the launch in the West which will have helped boost game software shipments, especially when the PS2 hardware itself was having production and supply issues.

New refresh of Amazon December ranking data, Battlefront bundle is rising and rising toward top. :)

#2 PS4 Battlefront bundle
#11 PS4 Uncharted Collection bundle [currently sold out at Amazon, available from resellers who sell it for $340 with additional DS4 gamepad, dropped at lot in hourly rankings @ #29]
#24 WiiU MK8 bundle
#28 Xbone Gears remaster bundle
#54 Xbone holiday bundle

This is the only comparison I have right now. But this is from last year so not very up to date.

Packaged software sales for PlayStation consoles (PS4 includes digital sales)
PS4 (14 months) - 81.8 million software sales*
PS3 (14 months) - 51.4 million software sales**
PS2 (15 months) - 49.8 million software sales***
PS1 (28 months) - 98.0 million software sales****

**PS3 cumulative hardware shipments were 10.5 million

****PS1 software sales not available for under first 28 months, total cumulative production shipments were 13.5 million after 28 months.

Please note that packaged software for PS1 and PS2 is counted as a sale when the software disc is produced in factory and sold to Sony distributors, for PS3 the sale is counted when the software disc is sold to retailers by Sony, for PS4 the sale is counted when the software disc is sold through to the end user.

Thanks. Seems comparable then.

Last gen, back when we used to get more comprehensive data from NPD and when attach rates were being released semi-regularly, I dug into U.S. console owner behavior a bit. Each time there was a release of attach rate info, I figured an average time of ownership for each console, compared that with the attach rate and came up with the number of games an average owner of each platform would buy over the course of a year. Then I tracked how this changed over time and came up with a couple of observations for U.S. console owners.
  1. As average time of ownership for a platform increases, the rate that an average owner purchases games decreases.
  2. 360 owners bought (.5) more games per year than PS3 or Wii owners despite (as of the last time I measured in Jan 2009) having an ATO that was greater by ~5 months. Basically, console owners bought 5 or 6 games per year and for Wii and PS3 owners it was more likely to be 5 and for 360 owners it was more likely to be 6.
I'd be curious to see how things look this gen. Doubt we have enough data, though. :/

It could be that too. He was the front person defending the deal... that would be a frustrating assignment under the circumstances. If it was me I would have trashed the place on exit. But that's why I'm not CEO. :runaway:

Darrell Gallagher have just "quit". Wild speculations that it's because sales targets were not met... :nope:

The article says his successors have been in place a few months so it's not "just" and would have happened before Rise's launch.

Could be. I don't disagree with speculation that he quit because of the way Rise was managed but the timing is incompatible with a reaction to the sales. More likely he left once the project had been delivered internally.
