I doubt they'd lie about the number but let's not pretend we haven't discussed platform holders lying about numbers before. Not too long ago there were discussions about Sony inventing numbers and fraudulent financial filings.

Looks like amazon got its first failure, though it did predict the low halo 5 sales.

Based on NPD software and hardware gonna have to say for a FACT this is total bollux, the only way this can be true is if by 'sales' they actually mean 'sold to shops' i.e. as we all call it here and elsewhere, shipped.

Do you think pepperoni producers wait to record a shipment as a sale only once it makes through your front door on a pizza?

Of course shipment equals sales as its the natural way to record your revenue when your customers are typically retailers (who are writing the checks that MS cashes) not the actual consumer.

They are reporting sales just like every other manufactuer/publisher whose goods move through Bestbuy, Walmart and Amazon.

What pub equates "sales" with "sold through" when it comes to publishing sales number related to their newly launched title? I doubt any report sales in such fashion.

No big price edge for XBO this time. Two large retailers do offer gift cards with XBO and not PS4. But it's nothing like the edge XBO held last year.

So far Amazon is showing a big edge for PS4 in Nov. I put a lot of weight in that. If it holds up (still a lot to go though) and PS4 doesn't win, it will be Amazon's first true loss in a while.

Well, 60 USD gift card basically makes it 239.99 at Target and 30 USD gift card makes it 269.99 at Walmart. Assuming you shop at those retailers. And lots of people shop at Walmart and Target.

thankyou dobwal for agreeing with me. Though of course if you used shipped numbers then you will have to deduct ~$20 off each item (distribution & retailer returns)
though if you read MS's statement they make it appear as if theyre talking about sold (attachrate, played on xb live) not shipped
How about you "prove MS wrong"?
no probs mate
Note: Im going to be very generous on MS's part giving them the benefit of the doubt
200k halo bundles @ $500 (higher than it prolly was)
735k halo games @ $80 (higher average price than what it prolly was)
20% digital games @ $80 (higher average price than what it prolly was)
200k halo controller @ $70 (200k is far too much as it was only the 4th highest controller on amazon that month, not even the best selling xbox controller but hey whatever)

= $184 million USA

to reach $400 million the game will of had to of sold way better outside the US than in the US, even the xb360 had over 50% of its sales in the USA, with the xb1 this figure has even risen, We know the game bombed relatively in the UK (xbox's second biggest market) So where are all the extra dollars coming from, I believe its as me and dobwal are saying

#59 Xbone 1TB Madden $386
#65 Xbone 1TB holiday bundle $395

20% digital games @ $80 (higher average price than what it prolly was)

I have a feeling you are greatly underestimating how much sold digitally. As well as how many the LE, LCE, and Digital DE sold.

It would not surprise me if digital sales were 50% of physical sales (33% digital 67% physical) or more at this point. And I believe at some point Microsoft said that digital sales of the game were higher than digital sales for the average game.

Going by that and upping the ASP to 90 already puts you over 200 million just for the US.

But what if the bundle sold more than 200k? That just puts it even more over 200 million, making it far easier to reach 400 million worldwide.

You have to consider that many of the people that were willing to take a chance on Halo 5 at launch are going to be the die hard fans due to 343i F-ing up Halo 4 and MCC. Fans that are more likely to want a special edition console. That are more likely to want the Limited Collector's Edition. The Limited Edition actually would have the least attraction. The diehard fans will want the LCE. Regular consumers will be happy with the standard edition. In simple terms, diehard fans probably made up a higher percentage of Halo buyers than for any previous Halo product as more casual gamers are less likely to buy it after Halo 4 and MCC.

To put that into perspective. Amazon.com is sold out of both the Standard and Limited Collector's Edition and you can only get them from 3rd parties on Amazon. The LE by contrast is still sold by Amazon.

Similarly, the Halo 5 XBO bundle is also sold out at Amazon.com. And has basically been sold out since launch. You can only get it from 3rd party sellers on Amazon currently.

And since there is no way to know real numbers, my guess is just as valid as yours. Or anyone's. But at the end of it all, it's not that hard to come up with various scenarios that make it trivially easy for Microsoft to have sold 400 million USD worth of Halo 5 related things world wide.

If you are willing to change all the variables to ensure your desired outcome beyond all reason it is obviously trivial to recreate Microsoft's number.

Just like you can change any variables you want like Zed has done in order to somehow claim they lied. Corporations don't routinely like about numbers. So what is more believable? Something someone made up on the internet that doesn't match with reality? Or any number of various scenarios that could lead to the reality?

BTW - what variables are being changed? The made up variables that Zed used?

The ONLY variable we have that has any credence currently is that Microsoft have sold 400 million USD worth of Halo 5 products.

Did we establish that the 400M was sold to retailers? (seems most likely at this point)
Did anyone think that MS simply over-shipped Halo 5 products? Judging by Abdiel's posts at GAF, BestBuy sold a lot of Halo 5 copies, but they still had a lot of Halo 5 bundles available. He almost said it as if MS overestimated demand. I believe he also said that last year that they REALLY over-shipped the AC bundles, which makes sense considering they were still sold for several months after the holidays ended.

Here is the PR again with my bolds.

One week after launching worldwide, Halo 5: Guardians has made history as the biggest Halo launch and fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive game to-date, with more than $400 million in global sales of Halo 5: Guardians games and hardware, pushing the franchise to over $5 billion lifetime. With the highest week one attach rate for a Microsoft first party title on Xbox One, the game was the most played of any game on Xbox One, as well as the most played on Xbox Live.

Fans have logged more than 21 million hours of total gameplay, including 12 million hours in campaign mode alone. The widely praised multiplayer modes have also led to nine million total hours played with nearly seven million multiplayer matches played across Arena and the all-new Warzone mode. In addition, Halo fans are taking to the new Requisition System in a big way, with over 45 million REQ Packs acquired, totaling more than 568 million REQ Cards.

Did they ship the copies fastest to the retailers haha :) but more importantly at the very least they are using some type of combination of shipped and end user sales, because they didn't ship digital copies or REQ packs to retailers, those are guaranteed end user sales. The usage metrics they use are also naturally end user metrics. So is their PR some Frankenstein combination of end user and shipped to retail figures? Perhaps the software is end user sales, but hardware shipped?

Just a correction to my above post, GAF says RotTR sold <56700 combined in the UK when the first game debuted at 183k. Now imagine all of the sales lost in the other PAL countries where the PS4 is far more dominant. Also, over 69% of TR: DE sales were on PS4 when it made its debut in the UK.
If there isn't a hefty discount for the PS4/PC versions, there's gonna be a huge drop in sales compared to the first, which is sad for the franchise.
