Everytime any company releases a public statement it is PR. Somehow the internet has turned the statement Public Relations into a negative. In this very thread it is being used as a negative when it is what companies do.
No. There's greatly different levels of PR, which in itself is not 'evil'. Bad PR is bad PR. Trust me, I have to deal with stupid PR people is my line of work all the time and different companies have extremely different PR philosophies. Some are more factual, some are basically fantasy, with a huge grey area in between.

Wow, Minecraft sure has staying power.

In C&VG's Off the Record podcast (the last one from September) they were discussing the Microsoft acquisition and mentioned that in a [then] recent interview with Mojang, Mojang had confirmed that sales had been solid and never dropped off for the past few years.

They add a new platform every so often, Vita most recently, and Windows Phone is likely next. Although I only play on PC/Mac (for mods) I bet plenty of people own it on multiple platforms.

Did anyone really expect Sunset Overdrive to be a big seller? I like the game and everything, but it never really seemed like something that would have mass appeal.

LOL.

Most of us have been around long enough to know that the clarity of one's PR statements are dependent on how well the one's console is doing overall.

These type of PR statements will be around until the end of consoles.

This is true. MS had some beauties last gen, too, and Sony's PR at it's NPD sales nadir were from some other plane of reality.

The best thing to do is to glean what useful information you can from the statement and take as a given that the PR team is trying to present that current situation in the in the most positive light possible.

Drive Club didn't chart either. I saw absolutely no one mention this so I had to double check the release date. It was Oct. 7.

SO probably did ok relative to budget, same as with Fora Horizon 2 and Drive Club. If it sold a few hundred thousand worldwide (and I think some guesstimating off british sales estimates at GAF suggests all those games did/will), it should be fine. I saw the devs of Lords of the Fallen say they were profitable already off 200k sold and 700k shipped, I believe. More modest budgeted titles dont need to sell millions.

Not exactly a smash hit for Spencer though.

Nothing much to say on charts. picking out the ones X1 sold better on were Destiny (even effected by PS4 bundles I think it's impressive) and Skylanders (X1 the kiddie console confiirmed)

Oh and Mordor did not do as well as I expected based on Amazon.

Free roam, fantastical setting, great graphics, kinda coolish and male main character but with added monsters?

The game is Jet Set Radio with Ratchet and Clank's guns. The aesthetic and style of play is not the same as Infamous. I'm sure that in the long run, Sunset Overdrive will do fine worldwide, but it doesn't seem like a game that would have mass appeal, at least not to me. The gameplay just isn't what most of shooter people are looking for.

But Infamous was a franchise sequel so it's not exactly a fair comparison, originals are more difficult to sell.

Seriously? I saw an advert for that game with every single YouTube video I viewed recently. Not to mention just about every advert break on TV. Unless Microsoft are aiming the game at a UK specific audience (which I doubt), then I'd expect the game to have charted and had a similar amount of commercials in the US.

The only reason it didn't chart is because the bundled copies are not counted in the sales chart. According to what someone else posted here, it would be in the top 10 with the bundled copies. I never saw an ad for it on youtube, and I don't have television service, so I don't know if I would have seen ads there. Maybe Microsoft thought it would be a blockbuster, but from reading comments online whenever game info was released, I'm not suprised it wasn't a smash hit. To me, it didn't seem like a game that would be, and the general feedback from people seemed to confirm that.

I like the game. I think it's good. It's not the best game I've ever played, but I think it's fun and solid. That said, it's not for everyone. It's a very niche style of gameplay.

Not to mention, it's an exclusive on the next-gen console with the fewest sales. If the game was multiplatform I'd think the sales would have a significant boost. Probably a lot of Insomniac fans with PS4.

I wonder what kind of PR will they start using after PS4 manages to widen the WW sales lead to 10 million units? :)

That's true in most cases. However games released in Oct can defy that reality due to holiday sales spike in November. Even Nov releases can peak a month later for the same reason.

I read one of the sales article and it stated that SO would have charted ninth if the sales charts were sku based not title based (which combines skus).

Uncharted was a title that did terrible in its first month of sales (NPD 117K) and has gone on to become one of the most anticipated franchises of the next gen.

SO review scores seem positive enough that it might have a long tail and slowly builds up its fans. Its a title that seems destined to be a popular "Free with Gold" title.

I doubt that, Uncharted had great mass appeal - mix Tomb Raider (very popular games) add in a bit of Indiana Jones (very popular movies) with likeable character in amazing visuals - everyone likes to be an adventurer. Whereas SO takes JSRF (niche game) add in a bit of bizzare weaponary and irritating character with stylized graphics and you will potentially get a niche following but not Uncharted levels of success.

Also, Uncarted was 1st party franchise that was truly pushed hard marketing-wize by console holder, and journalist responded well to the core group of people who made the game [Amy Hennig, Bruce Straley, Neil Druckmann and Richard Lemarchand].

I don't expect Sunset Overdrive reaching the level of Uncharted fame. Maybe, it will manage to become "nextgen replacement" to the fans of Jak and Daxter/Ratchet games [genre that is on downward slope for a while now].

SO is basically a third party title published and pushed hard by MS. It got its own console bundle with a white XB1. And its been favorably reviewed by critics. None of that mattered when it came to UC as it basically sold by word of mouth. Its not like Sony marketed the game until it reached a high level of sales.

For every reason you can come up why UC sold well, those reasons didn't help it with its initial sales. UC ultimately overcame lackluster sales because it resonated well with gamers. There nothing to say that SO can't do the same.

UC is relevant and not because its simply exists in a popular genre and has good marketing. UC is considered a great game by many and this aspect is where it generates most of its support. Good/great games can overcome bad or lackluster starts.
