the next 45 days includes November and December, where they can be expect to sell (and replenish) a few million units. "We'll reach 10 million soon" could therefore, potentially, be "come next year." Ergo, they could have been at anything from 7 million to nearly 10 million units when that post was made, within spitting distance of the goal or relying on the Holiday season to predictably get them there.
You're actually just repeating my post here...

But anyway, the point is that this is the worst that the statement can read. Likelihood is that it is very close given most of the products for the holiday period are already in flight.

Retailers don't pay full price for games.
I know. When I said full price I was referring to their wholesale cost. They aren’t going to pay that for new games to give away with old console inventory if they have the opportunity to make MS eat those costs in the form of official bundles.

LOL.

Most of us have been around long enough to know that the clarity of one's PR statements are dependent on how well the one's console is doing overall.

These type of PR statements will be around until the end of consoles.

October NPD:

1. NBA 2K15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
2.Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (3DS)
3.The Evil Within (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, PC)
4.Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (360, PS3, PC)
5.Destiny (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
6.Skylanders: Trap Team (360, Wii, Wii U, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, 3DS, mobile)
7. FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, PS Vita, 3DS)
8. Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One)
9. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4, XBox One, PC)
10. Minecraft (360, PS3, PS4)

PS4 is best selling console of the month. Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive did not crack top 10.

Sunset overdrive doesn't seem to have been that big. The bundle dropped off Amazon's rankings very quickly. It's ranked 58th on Amazon's monthly gaming rankings, below COD:AW and Terraria for 360. Given NPD is going to track a huge portion of the worldwide XB1 market, it strikes me that Insomniac may well be struggling.

Wow, Minecraft sure has staying power.

@DieH@rd , it's no surprise that Sunset Overdrive did not chart as it was only in that NPD for 4 days.

Also, would the SunSet Overdrive Bundles even count towards the software sales figures? No. they do not!

"It did come in at No. 9 if you count games by SKU (meaning only the PS4 version of NBA 2K15 and the Xbox One version of The Evil Within). And of course, none of these sales include the bundled version of Sunset Overdrive that comes with the white Xbox One."

What do you know I was right about Sunset. Completely the wrong platform to release that game. Well hopefully they'll release a PC version.

Eventually these NPD results are going to become less and less accurate over time when you consider all the digital downloads that aren't being counted. It would be nice to get more numbers other than NPD as we move further along this generation

Its likely a very good game, honestly it along with some of the other exclusives have me tempted to take advantage of the holiday discount but the issue here is just Insomniac exclusives have never sold well above average in spite of being very good.

I guess its possible this one sells better than previous exclusives have on PS3 but I doubt it. This is the kind of game an enthusiast plays and keeps in their collection, it adds character to the platform and rounds out the offerings, all very good for MS. And if one looks closely at offers the XB1 has a lot of appeal for the gamer who wants more than multiplats, this is a very positive development and hopefully MS continues to invest in these sorts of titles.

Now that Xbox fans are finding themselves on the wrong side of the sales argument maybe we can finally move past the good games sell meme...

edit:

Now that I think about it, there is an argument to be made that titles like this helped get the PS3 back in the game despite a worse start than the XB1 has had. I'd argue that if MS is smart they will double down here bc if they can stay aggressive on price and offer more variety then in previous generations over time they can give Sony a difficult time. And honestly moving forward with streaming, tablets, cell phones and so on platform holders are going to have to invest more heavily in first party offerings or risk being a commodity.

Game Sales lesson 101, games sales are front loaded, some more than others, Nintendo games normally have long tails but even here look

eg Super Smash 3DS #2 this month
705k Sep2014 (2 days), 495k Oct2014 (the whole month)
Sunset Overdrive wont crack the top 10 next month also, pity it looks like a fun game

pity we're not gonna get any numbers this month, prolly not much PR either

edit:
Destiny (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
The xbone version outsold the ps4 version! even though it was more marketed as a ps4 game :)

Yeah, and SO probably isn't the type of game that will have legs.

The only games that have legs are blockbusters/proven franchises like Gran Turismo, Halo, Mario, CoD, GTA etc. Or games that have a strong MP.

Honestly I'm surprised SO didn't crack the top 10, even considering the fact that bundles were not included.

NPD lesson 101, Bundles not counted and Digital copies not counted.

I'm surprised it did as well as it did, ranking #9 by individual SKUs when a good bit of their sales weren't counted.

The Evil Within taking third place is pretty crazy. Who would've of figured a game like that would even chart in the top 10 let alone reach #3?

whats that gotta do with what I said? it is still like 90% games front loaded, I assume most/all games now have digital sales thus whatever SO gets the titles above & below it also benifit from the same % roughly. Yes in this case bundles but they are not in the 100s of thousands or else the xbone would of sold shit loads this month

sales all round for software were weak, #2 had only ~500,000 which is bad any month, but very bad for october

That's true in most cases. However games released in Oct can defy that reality due to holiday sales spike in November. Even Nov releases can peak a month later for the same reason.

I agree mate in nov SO will most likely sell more in nov than oct, but nov is a big month, It wont crack the top 10 because to be numb X in nov requires *2 (at least) to be num X in oct, and dec is another 50% increase, broad terms.

Well, when one company says it sells 10 million consoles, and the other says it 'will ship 10 million consoles soon', surely even you can see a difference?
Everytime any company releases a public statement it is PR. Somehow the internet has turned the statement Public Relations into a negative. In this very thread it is being used as a negative when it is what companies do.

Using semi-truths and evasive roundabout answers isn't going to garner positive responses. This applies to all businesses, not just MS.

7. FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, PS Vita, 3DS)
8. Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One)

FIFA sold better than Madden in the US?! I can only guess that Madden's been available for longer, but that's still quite something.
