Alan Wake: Microsoft preparing to leave PC gamers behind (again)

aye the 9400m sucks. Whats more. It costs $200 bones to get a 4850 512 meg card put into a i mac system and you have to buy a certian screen size. Your looking at $1800 I believe for a machine with a 4850 card.

On the flip side you can buy a $800 dell tower with a quad core cpu and 8 gigs of ram and buy a 5870 for $400 and still save $600 bucks over the mac.

PC gaming has gotten very cheap

BTW - this isn't a reply to you specifically, but to the general sentiment that MS doesn't care about PC gamers or wins PC gaming by default.

MS while not itself publishing games for PC anymore, does go out of it's way to take developer requests, IHV requests and limitations, and then form a working compromise between what is desired and what is possible.

MS has no interest in pushing the PC as a gaming platform, but they have a lot of interest in pushing the PC as a development platform.

So they're not going to burn any bridges. They're not going to abandon directx because that would force PC gamers' hands, it would force developers' hands.

MS does far more for PC gaming than any other company in existence. They act as a crucial itermediary in balancing the needs of the developers with the realities of the IHVs.

There are companies out there that depend heavily on PC gaming for their continued existence. I'm not sure how you can claim this. Microsoft would survive pretty well if gamers ceased to exist. What they don't want is for them to go to competitors.

And then to top it off, they actually manage to make any of a few hundred thousand different hardware configurations work out of the box with virtually any game released. All the while providing for mostly standardized installation procedures for games negating the need for developer's having to provide extensive instructions on how to even install a game as they had to to for quite a while.

You're talking about GFW? That's part of the issue itself, though -- GFW was part of PC as a platform, and what we've seen lately is backpedalling on the whole initiative.

The day I see MS abandon updating DirectX and most especially Direct3D, is the day I think MS no longer cares about PC gamers. MS invests a ton of time and money in making sure gaming continues to advance on PC and that the user experience continues to get more painless. Dx10 with enforced features for example. Dx11 with the ability to write to one Dx level and have it work with multiple Dx levels as another example.

Again, it's about developers. PC is cheap to develop for, it's by far the most open platform (even Windows), and MS can lock developers into their dev tools. They have considerable stake in directX even from the console side. So no, they're not going to abandon directx.

But going so far as to say they care about PC gamers? They don't have to; they just have to keep developers on PC, gamers will go where the games are.

And considering MS doesn't get royalties from all games released on PC means they are basically doing all this for free.

Not even a little bit.

Not GFW. They've been doing this since the first version of DX was released for Win95. It's a continuing process of making things not only easier for the consumer but easier for IHVs and game devs.

And dovetails into the guiding force behind the consumer version of Windows. Making computing as easy to use as possible for people that haven't got a clue how to use a computer.

This isn't to say it's driven by any sort of philanthropic idealism, but by doing so they can reach the largest possible pool of consumers.

SB

So has anyone heard anything on this. Is there a pc release brewing 5 or 6 months from now ? I really don't want to play through the game on the 360 (i wont buy it just borrow it) to then find out its on the pc a few months later.

A PC version is incredibly unlikely at this point and if it ever comes it most certainly will not be in 2010. You'll just have to suffer 540p, tearing and a sub 30fps framerate like the rest of us.............

Quite sad really. I remember years ago when the game was supossed to be a PC showcase for quadcore CPUs etc.

Was very excited for this game....now I guess I will see how it reviews and player impressions before deciding if I am going to get it. Its not like I don't have a huge backlog already.

Or just skip it like the rest of us ;)

Good news I guess. Way to late to pick up any hype though. I'll prob pick it up if its a decent port once it comes down in price a bit.

Yes!! Now I can stop looking for my Xbox copy...I just buy it on steam :D
Great game...I am looking forward to play also the DLC (hoping for gamepad support!!)

I hope that all DLC is included from the beginning

To release this game this long after its 360 release and then charge extra for the DLC, it just doesn't look good

The 2 DLCs released so far, The Signal & The Writer, are both included

I want to get this, but I also want to boycott it for the way us PC gamers were treated, but that wouldn't do us any good in promoting the platform. If it's a decent port, then I'll consider it.

I got it for 360 and... it's still in the shrink wrap :S Too many games to play, and the whole putting the DVD in thing is a turn-off compared to Steam :p
