It has mini-games too! Block Defense (pictured above) is a tower defense style game where you place fire, slow, missile, and arrow blocks that attack monsters running on a map.
Dash Race is exactly what it sounds like, a footrace mini-game. You can earn prizes by playing this if you complete the course fast enough.

This update adds such things as HDD install and a loading screen viewer -- apparently stuff that fans have been requesting.
Paid content will kick off with a single download contents pack consisting of 10 pieces of edit character data and 10 new stages for the Block Defense mini game. This DLC pack will sell for ¥250.
A second DLC pack will be available on January 8. Priced at ¥100, this will include 15 pieces of edit character data.
SouthPeak Games will publish the retro dungeon crawler in Europe this May, the same time Atlus plans to publish the game in North America.
The optional hard drive install and load screen viewer from the recent 3D Dot Game Heroes patch are built into Atlus’ version. Extra block defense levels and character edit data, which were released as paid downloadable content in Japan, are included on-disc in the North American version of 3D Dot Game Heroes. You’ll be able to start the game as a car, tank, shark, Santa Claus, and the “President” from Metal Wolf Chaos.

3D Dot Game Heroes had a ton of video game humor and Atlus plans on preserving the tone in their version. “The localization was kept as true to the original as possible,” Scott Strichart, Project Lead, explained.

3D Dot Game Heroes is a title the US is excited about. How did you come up with the idea for it?
It came from one artist. One artist made a simple demo and that started the game.
I’m not sure if you can confirm this, but maybe it’s inspired by a certain green tunic wearing hero?
