[360, PS3] Mass Effect 2 *(Spoiler Warning)

I have to totally disagree with MfA's comments about the shooting. It's vastly improved, not even in the same league as the original. The shooting is now actually enjoyable as a core game mechanic, which is really nice. I actually enjoy firefights now...

Also, read any review, every single one I've read espouses the improved shooter gameplay. So, definately take those comments with a grain of salt.

The more and more I hear about this the less and less my desire to try it. Still think I'm going to pick it up at some point to try it out though. But, ugh, it appears all the RPG heavy features have been ripped out or neutered in an effort to make it more shooter friendly.

And if MfA is correct they didn't even get that right.

Regards,
SB

Well yea, it still isnt a great shooter though id dissagree with MfA i do think it is an improvement it certainly feels better to me. Bassically they nurfed the RPG elements a lot and buffed the shooting, now a jack of all trades master of none kind of thing, where as the original was a master RPG with an interesting take on battle systems.

Still definately worth playing though its not bad or anything just a bit of a letdown considering my love for the first one.

Yea me too, not really because of any of the systems or anything but just because aiming feels more precise, headshots come easy and your not fighting the controls, its still not exactly AAA shooter class though.

You get combat right away in the first one. You have maybe 3 conversations before they drop you onto the first planet, and soon you're up against geth.

Ah! You're right, I remember now that you mention it. That's where you get part of your team or whatnot.

I guess I didn't really feel that part was combat because it was so easy. Could you actually die in that part? It felt like barely interactive movie. It wasn't until later on that it felt I had any control over my character's attacks or had to use any sort of strategy rather than just 'point in their general direction and shoot'.

MfA's comments about the game are fairly unique, but strangely shared by Tom Chick on fidgit. I don't generally agree with Tom, though.

Ya I dunno, I think most of what made it a great RPG is still there. All the exploration, character development, and story are all present.

What's missing is character customization, and items in general (though it's still there in simplified form). And while that stuff is core to an RPG, in ME1 it's sort of everything that sucked about the game, so removing it, and replacing with an automated system, which does much the same thing, works well for me.

True, I would've preferred a revamped and improved ME1 system, but if we can't have that, I still greatly prefer this new system to the one in the original game. Looking back, I spent way too much time in the inventory screen in the first game, and was constantly annoyed at having to switch gear and remember who was carrying what weapon/item.

Also, it feels as they've made each class much more appealing in it's own right, in the original many things overlapped, and there wasn't much unqiue about any one class. Where as with this one, each class has some pretty cool powers that makes them unique(drone for sentinal, cloak for infiltrator, charge for vangaurd etc), and the skillset is also is quit e a bit more limited, making each specialization really feel different than the others.

Can anyone confirm the nightmarish framerate issue and texture delaying are gone now? They literally killed my experience in ME for 360 even though I still liked the game a lot.

The framerate is smooth most of the time and i have only seen texture popin like the first game on one occasion, you have nothing to worry about.

Its wierd how opinions differ, ive found all 3 of those noticeably areas worse than the previous game. Though ME1 has been my favourite game this gen so i may have a fonder memory of it than most.

Still pretty early. I'd say if you didn't like the first one, you won't like this one either. The conversation system and style of storytelling are identical, for the most part.

I think the combat is better, though not top of the line like you'd get in a dedicated shooter game. I like the simplified inventory so far. Don't mind the lack of item drops.

Sooo....is there any trick to importing your character from Mass Effect 1? When I try it says no character data found, but I can fire up ME1 and load my old saves just fine.

most improved game of the generation, better improvement even than AC2.... everything was addressed and refined and made even more engaging and loving the story more as well.

I have to agree with most of the things mfA said, except even I think the shooter elements are a bit more refined than the first [but then I didn't had any problems with the one in the first game].

For every good addition there is a useless deletion in this game.
Having ammo is far more annoying than overheating, when I played ME1; the very first time I overheated a weapon was in the last Saren fight. And the extremely scaled back RPG elements are just doing no good to me...it feels like a RPG which is hollow from inside cause you have such great things like conversations, going from cluster to cluster to search for minerals and the basic Bioware RPG formula of closing in on your squad members. But all seems to be in vain when you see that there is not a single sign of inventory, no loots, nothing at all ! Even the point distribution system is hugely pared back. ME2 disappoints rather vaguely in this front.

That said I am still enjoying this game, lets see how it turns up & if its really better than the first one as a whole & not just in shooting.

Yeah I'm having good fun so far, I've already started hitting on my pretty new yeoman :)

Didn't realize so many people saw the inventory and stats as such a key part of the game. I'm hearing the complaint in a number of places. I thought they were a pretty small part of the last one. Guess it's something people expect from RPGs, and maybe RPG fans like to micro-manage. To me, stats have nothing to do with RPGs, but I understand in the PC space that's kind of what it means.
