[360, PS3] Borderlands

I feel really intrigued reading your impressions, and think I'd like the game. Someone mentioned Hellgate, there isn't a monthly fee attached to this game is there? I've not heard anything of the sort, but then again I haven't read up that closely on this game either - I didn't even know there were different classes for example, or that you could level up. ;)

Would you guys say the game is a better experience on a PC or on a console (PS3 in my case, even though I have a 360 also)? I never really liked FPS-style aiming on consoles; thumbsticks aren't particulary precise, so if this is a FPS-type game then I'd feel gimped playing it on a console. :)

Also, my PC is of course much, much more brutal than today's consoles, so from a pure hardware standpoint...heh.

This is a really fun game. Good times tonight. Although the difficulty with 4 people becomes an issue due to enemies scaling and lack of ammo, it's still a lot of fun. Glad I picked it up.

We just weren't coordinated. All of us were using repeaters, so we were splitting that ammo three ways. You have to get it so each person is using a different type of ammo until you can get some type of fast ammo regen. Another strategy is to keep dropping the turret with ammo regen between fights until you're full.

We also weren't splitting drops. People were picking them up randomly, so one person could have been carrying extra guns that were better than the other people were using.

Using the soldier it is very easy to solo because of the turret. It seems playing co-op is pretty challenging unless your team is well coordinated, or at least loaded with awesome guns and lots of ammo.

I started with a Berserker. Was going ok until I tried to pick up some loot off a dead skag, and somehow I dropped my shotgun for another pistol. Now the shotty is gone and I have to play as a pistolero LOL!

I need to get in on some of that co-op action.

Yea ammo isn't a problem with a properly set up soldier , When I group with my 25 level soldier none of my group needs ammo at all.

I'm spending skill points on melée damage, so I can charge my Berserker in close and beat the piss out of enemies. It's pretty entertaining.

Just to clarify: Is this a game where you are constantly low on ammo, where you have to constantly search for ammo and have to budget if you are shooting or not...or is there plenty of ammo available, so that one doesn't have to bother about it?

IT all depends . You can easily find yourself low on ammo at the start of the game. But as you level up you get acess to more gun slots (so you can carry 4 diffrent types of weapons with 4 diffrent types of ammo) , you get acess to ammo upgrades , for instance when I first started my machine gun would hold 70 rounds of ammo , now it holds 700 and you also get acess to abilitys and items that refill your ammo

I could re-spec so Instead of turret damage we get tons of ammo?

Depends on what we are doing. I have a level 25 soldier that is specced as support. So i dunno what level you are at , but if you are close to me now we can start playing with my main.

You can carry all types weapons thus all types of ammo from the beginning. The gun slots are just for quick access.

You either loot or buy ammo.
The real answer to your question depends on what kind of missions you prefer to do.
Tough and above missions tend to cost a lot of ammo, while normal and below ones give more ammo than you can carry.

Of course when you level up "tough" ones becomes "normal", so it's just a matter of ordering if you want to play it safe.

God damn this game is hard in co-op! But the loot drops are sweet. Scott and I found a sniper rifle with 161 damage, and man is it fun to explode heads. :) Scott was kind enough to give it to me even though he is a better sniper than me.

The game seems much easier solo than co-op. This is also the type of gunplay that Mass Effect should have had, and hopefully Mass Effect 2 will have. It's pretty fun, but you can't play it like a typical shooter. If an enemy is 3-5 levels higher than you, or there is a group of those bastards, forget it. Just run away because there is NOTHING you can do except die. I don't like that aspect of these types of RPG-like games.

I so wanted ME, but the it wasn't a real shooter. You guys are killing me with this title--I just don't think with ODST out, FM3 coming, and MW2 coming out in 2 weeks that you guys will be playing in December without some legs in MP :( Sounds like a really cool game.

I've been playing split screen with the wife for the last two days on the PS3 and it works surprisingly well, frame rate is acceptable and the "tether" is limited to the current area which is comparatively large (you can be totally out of site of each other off fighting scags in separate areas of the local map). Liberating even, I wish more games had as decent a local co-op mode as Borderlands.

The menu setup is a bit cumbersome in splitscreen as you have to scroll the text around since the menus stay the same size. But it is cool that they did not dumb anything down on that front.

Found some bugs. . .

The equipment menu (select) occasionally loses its contents until you exit and re-load the menu, seems to do it when you cycle left instead of right. The HUD also shows us as both having the host's name though the characters are different and it does save them separately. When selecting the character at the load screen it shows the correct name but once chosen, we both are listed as "deathindustrial". Not sure if that is because she has never played single player or if that is just an oddity of their co-op implementation.

The second player does not seem to store their options as we have to re-select "invert look" for the wife's character once we have fired up a co-op session.

Other than that though the game has been a blast so far. Between Borderlands and Demon's Souls it is going to be a while before any of my other games get some attention.

=)

Cheers

I just got it as one of my buy 2 get 3rd free at best buy, it's pretty cool. Very simple idea, but fun. I'm level 5 with the female character and having fun so far. Haven't tried coop yet, but probably will once I practice some more.

This game is one of the bigger surprises of the year, I think. Slowly more and more people on my friends list are picking it up because of good word of mouth. Maybe this title will have steady sales for a few months.

I'm fairly dissappointed with the game.

To be completely fair, the looting aspect doesn't appeal to me much, but RPG aspects are either too simple (leveling) or most of the time not relevant enough to make a real difference (ie weapon proficiencies).

The worse part however is that the weapons never ever show slightest signs of creativity.
The main reason I kept playing was the hope of seeing some interesting alien weapons, which to my surprise never happened. As a result, you keep doing the same thing from start to finish, with little deviations like elemental weapons' importance.

Story too is non existent.

That said, shooting is much better than that other post apocalyptic RPG, and travel is not much of an hurdle like that openworld Ubisoft shooter, but I was expecting more from Gearbox especially given that they had the setup for all out creativity.
