[360, PS3] Borderlands

Ha...playing PC is like cheating: paying less money for the game, getting better graphics+performance and better controls...I don't usually take the easy road ;) (just kidding, but I am definitely starting to look jealous to the PC gaming crowd, thinking about becoming a member myself!)

Hah, I'm playing it "the way it's meant to be played". Nvidia says so, right at the beginning! ;)

Although I'm not very far into the game (lvl 15 Berserker), I haven't noticed any of those issues on the 360 version.

No surprise for me that PS3 users get shafted once again.

Sometimes I think all dev+publisher hate sony and the PS :devilish:;
I really think that there must be a reason why PS3 versions are a messs compared to the Xbox360 versions
(I am not talking about graphics or performance DF style, but I am talking about bugs, features and such things...just look at MW2 MP)
Whatever reason (it has to be something money related, I am sure)...it sucks, as I typically buy the PS3 version!

So to all multiplat devs all over the world...stop moaning and stop constantly dissapointing your fans!

The good news: I heard that Gearbox works on a patch to heal the sound issues and I heard that they are planing a DLC

With respect to Borderlands, not sure I can agree. All versions had issues out the door and the larger bugs like loss of stats points apparently affect all platforms.

That said, I have dropped enough time on the PS3 version to have two 30+ level characters (mostly split screen with the wife) and haven't encountered any show stoppers. I am however now starting to backup my profile to a USB key once in a while.

Cheers

Yeah, I don't encounter show stoppers either, and I have a hunter level 29 myself. Just for the record: I think that this is one of the best games this year (and I played almost all console heavy hitters), it really clicked with me! But if it did not have the technical issues, it would be even better (that is the reason I am somewhat dissapointed: the game is great, the tech is not...but the game does not seem to be so demanding to be honest from a tech point of view)

Just out of curiousity:
Did you get the sound stuttering and sound issues? When this happens, every single shot stutters and the music as well...then after a while it gets better.
Or after traveling to a new area, when you encounter enemie types the first time and kill them, it shortly freezes before their death animation kicks in...

I only use HDMI for video (LCD projector) so the audio out is plain old 2 channel analog. So far no noticeable audio issues with that setup though you do definitely get more simultaneous sound channels in single player than split-screen.

As to stalls and such, I mostly play splitscreen with the wife and do get the occasional frame drop / pause (when loading menus mainly). That said, it doesn't bother me and in the context of essentially playing two copies of the game once on a single machine. It doesn't interfere with gameplay and is a happy tradeoff for one of the best local co-op modes I have ever had the pleasure to play.

Definitely looking forward to the DLC for this one (and the sequel).

Cheers

Borderlands DLC coming out Nov 24! $9.99

Zombies too played out? Ehhh, I don't know. We'll have to see it sounds interesting more than just Zombies, with Frankenstein monsters and other things.

Like L4D2 though, I really wonder about the timing. Couldn't these things have been pushed forward just a bit to coincide with Halloween?

Oh.. and I found out why my Bloodwing was attacking more guys than stated, it's because I've got the Ranger class mod that adds damage and multiple targets.

Bah, I didn't realize until just recently that you could buy a skillpoint reset for your character. :p Tried out bird again with a full set of points there. Still prefer straight sniper with some support skills from bird (rapid reload) and pistol (increased crit damage, heal on kill). With a bit of +crit damage from items, most non-bosses are one shot kills. Or two shots (the ants you sometimes have to hit in the "head" to make them dazed and expose their weak point).

Also being able to bypass shields make's shielded enemies ridiculously easy to kill.

Now if only I can get a class mod item with +regen sniper ammo. Or a sniper rifle with +sniper ammo regen.

Full pistol spec is also pretty deadly. Actually even more deadly at close range, but suffers more at range.

Been playing this game a lot (lvl 26 Berserker, woot!) over the past few days, and I have a question hopefully someone like Laa-Yosh can answer: Is it easier/less costly to create cell-shaded content like Borderlands uses, compared to the style of content other games shoot for?

Now, I agree that in screenshots Borderlands looks positively silly. However, I honestly don't even notice the "cell-shadedness" when I play the game. Rather, I think the graphics in-game look just fine. The lighting seems pretty good, aside from the annoying day/night cycle.

I wouldn't say the graphics look fine (at least to me). But I've gotten used to them enough that they don't bother me as much anymore. That said, I've never once sat there and wanted to take a look at anything closer because I thought it looked great (as I have in most other 3D games).

And I REALLY hate the texture streaming for what doesn't appear to my eyes to be very detailed textures. It's bloody annoying to have to look at some ultra low res textures while higher res textures are streamed in. UGH.

Which I can't really understand why they even bother to do that on the PC. You have to load whenever you enter a new area anyways. Just load all the freaking textures already.

Words just can't express how much I really REALLY hate the streaming textures when you can sit there and watch them replacing low res textures.

Finished the game once in split-screen co-op. I don't like the graphics for both stylistic and technical reasons, but it's fun to play through a reasonably long campaign mode with a friend. There aren't many PS3 games with campaign split-screen co-op.

Near the end, I did dabble in save editing. It's convenient to have carrying slots to spare.:p It's the first time I'm aware of easy save editing for a PS3 game.

More new DLC content coming out! Mad Moxxie's something or other.

Not mentioned in this article, but mentioned in the press release - the ability to get TWO more skill points and a weapons bank to store your precious weapons.

I might have to skip the Dr. Zed's DLC and move right to this one. Depends how much longer I've got. It took me forever to go from level 27 or so to level 31. Doing those side quests gain you zero exp it seems.

I'm pretty sure I did all of the side quests, and I ended up at level 36. Of course, I would often go on shooting sprees at the various villages because they re-populate and it was fun. That gained some extra EXP I'm sure.

Same here ended up level 36/37 when I finished mainly due to do all the side quests. 36 was without actively pursuing achievements, 37 was while actively pursuing easy to attain achievements. Like killing 50 things with melee or rocket launcher for example (both of which I completely skipped with sniper due to not using either). So second time I got every single one of the kill 50's and kill 250's just because it's simple. And that nets a nice chunk.

Also, did a playthrough on Siren. Siren + class mod with SMG ammo regen = easy mode. Completely and totally blows away the sniper in anything but extremely long ranges. With a SMG with decent accuracy (75+), with a scope, with max points in +fire rate, with ammo regen = things dying without even having to blink even at mid-long range. Although I'd recommend 80+ accuracy for long range... Oh and recoil reduction helps at longer ranges. :) Hunter with pure pistol spec would come close to the raw carnage, but unloading 60 bullets in a couple of seconds = mass devastation. Oh and spray and pray SMGs (damage x4 - IE 4 bullets per shot) = instant splatterfest up close...

I ended up with a few pretty mean snipers (~+380 damage), a gnarly shotgun (~+1000 damage), and one absolutely nasty scoped pistol (~+450 damage). I loved those weapons so much, I never even thought about using SMGs or Assault rifles.

And I was a Berserker too (explosives are his specialty, apparently), so to think those weapons would be even better with another class is sweet.

My favorite combo on my sniper was a Unique Sniper rifle (forgot the name) with 400+ damage and a 100% proc of electricity x4 (15 ammo base, over 20 with ammo skill, and 2.x fire rate). I combined that with a pistol with 87x7 damage with fair accuracy (close range all pellets would hit) which is about 609 base damage if all pellets hit.

It's quite excellant, but Siren with SMG was just a cakewalk in the campaign by comparison. Especially bosses.

The only Boss I had trouble with was the last one. It took a few tries and lots of ammo (and nearly all my cash). I ended up relying on my maxed out berserker skill to finish off the last 1/4 of it's health. Don't think I could have done it without berserking it, so I'm not looking forward to that encounter with another character. Good to hear it may not be so bad.

Last boss is pretty easy if you do a few things...

1. When it's got the tenticles you can destroy out (the ones that shoot "missles"), don't stop strafing until the tenticles are destroyed. They'll never hit you if you are in constant motion.

2. Hide behind something evertime it's about to do the eye beam. Makes a noise right before it's going to do it.

3. Other than that keep hitting him in the eye.

I kill him by using the 2 pillars behind the entrance you come in (near the cliff edge). Good place for cover and you take no damage from his other attacks. Just have to watch out for the Tongue as it can push you off the cliff, but the tongue is easy to dodge... Any medium-long range weapon with decent accuracy will do wonders for not wasting ammo. Didn't have any ammo problems on him.

Picked this up again and finally did the old haven missions: man this was tough and really special - definitely one of my absolute favorite games this year! Great job!
Crazy: I just found a weapon which fires plasma spheres (600 damage) and has UNLIMITED ammo...just needs some seconds to regenerate energy, what the heck!?!?

The good thing: after the patch (PS3) I did not run into the sound bug/ issue I had...but I get a new visual bug instead: suddenly, the sky turn into some psychodelic color flashing low res mess...but quiting and loading healed this bug. After I got it twice in short time, I did not ran into this bug anymore...
