Sony PS6, Microsoft neXt Series - 10th gen console speculation [2020]

View attachment 12851
If we go by the god leak, I don't think there is going to be a series S2. Probably a powerful, costly console and other third party consoles. All using the Xbox UI on top of windows. So no devkits and dedicated versions of games, just the PC builds.

Optional access to the windows interface.

The steam deck model, almost 1 to 1.

It will likely be dropped if they cloud is capable of replacing it
But then all the work that has gone into Series S version of games would be wasted.

There has to be some path to play these games going forward I would think.

I find this message hard to comprehend. Especially the "word!" part.
Yeah. I think Arkham night 2 is simply saying "here's an article about a PS6 prototype appearing at TGS24 with 32 GBs RAM" but it's not written in a B3D appropriate style. Could do with editing.

You know all the talk from Microsoft about the forward preservation team? I think that's referring to a Xbox emulator for windows that will give you access to all of your account games.

Not necessarily. They could be used for mobile gaming, or lower variants of cloud gaming

But technically xbox6 and ps6 is now aligned in numbering. Xbox doesn’t have to be weird about naming anymore.

I dont see that there does. That effort isn't 'wasted', it'll simply be useful for Series S owners. Nothing wrong with that if that's the extent of things.

For people in the future, they'll simply run the superior Series X versions of that software. It's not like they're two totally different things that both need preserving.

PlayStation 6 SoC is 'design complete' says leaker: AMD Zen 5 with X3D cache, next-gen UDNA GPU

that's what they are saying. Back in the era, we'd be having PS2 if PS1was released in 2020. There was a 5-years gap between PS1 and PS2. This has been an odd gen.
We're long past the days of 5 year gens.

X360 was 8 years. PS3 was 7 years.

XB1+PS4 were both 7 years.

Switch is ending at 8 years.

This is not some blip, this is a trend that is happening for extremely good reason. And because the factors involved involved in the lengthening of these lifetimes are only growing more intense, I actually think it makes the most sense to actually extend lifetimes slightly further this gen. That probably wont happen, but it should.

Still, 2028 is my guess for PS6. And I dont believe there's any possible chance PS6 is 'design finalized' this early in any case. At the very earliest, we'd be talking late 2027 launch. None of the actual architectural designs that the PS6 will be based on will even be design finalized by now! lol The idea that they'd be using a 2024 CPU architecture in 2027/2028 is also quite unbelievable.

If the target is 2027, the schedule is perfectly reasonable for that.

A new SOC design like this has a 4-5 year design cycle with the design/architecture portion being being done early on. The majority of the time is spent of verification and validation (especially in the interaction of the various IP blocks). Completely normal to tapeout a first iteration of design two years before commercial release as validation and bring up can take up so much time.

What we don't know if is if they are planning on a B0 tapeout (or just metal fixes for bugs). I could see them taping A0 this year, validating most of the SOC, allowing firmware development to start early, pipe cleaning the manufacturing process, and then having another tapeout with updated IP blocks for the final tape out next at the end of 2026 ( or mid 2027 if the launch date gets pushed to 2028).

I actually do hope it's a 2028 part on 2nm as I don't think going just N3E is enough of a jump perf/power improvements over what's in the PS5 Pro.

The sort of architectures they will plan to use by then are still gonna be in development at AMD.

Late 2027 is still nearly three years away.

Also kinda doubt 2nm even if it was 2028, though it could be close. Still, costs may be insurmountable regardless of how long 2nm has been in production/how mature it is. Very much hoping that Intel or maybe Samsung improve a decent chunk by then to become viable options. Continuing to make consoles on advanced TSMC processes as TSMC gets ever greedier is a big problem.
