Xbox One Slim

So anyone with the slim care to comment on standing it vertically? To fit into my cabinet I want to stand it - but I know (from experience) that because you can doesn't mean you should - for example, the PS4 seemed to run hotter and louder vertically. So anyway, picking mine up next week and want to know of there's any reason I shouldn't stand vertically?

Only that the stand to do this was only provided with the 2TB version I believe, you may need to buy a stand separately.

I have not placed mine on its end so cannot comment on operation or noise unfortunately.

Wow, just unboxed mine and I'm frankly shocked at how small it is...it's really bizzare it's 'only' 40% smaller because it's feels like a bigger difference! Only issue is it's too tall for where I planned to put it!! D'oh!

What are the chances we see an Elite bundle sometime this fall?
- Black Xbox One S
- 1 or 2TB Hard drive
- Elite Controller
- $499?

Seems like a no-brainer but I wonder if they are waiting to update the Elite controller with Bluetooth before doing this?

I do not think there could be any "Elite" systems until Scorpio. Especially at that price.

Really? I'd be a little shocked if they didn't release an Xbox One S elite bundle..a lot of people want a black console in itself and Microsoft could force them to buy into an elite bundle to get it.

I guess the only argument you could make is that most people who want that controller already have it...so maybe there wouldn't be enough appeal overall.

$100 more than the PS4 Pro?! I imagine the people interested in the Elite controller will have an XB1 already by and large, and it can always be sold separately and avoid a clearly uncompetitive console price-tag.

OK maybe $399 or $450 would make more sense.

499 way to high. I think 1TB+elite controller was going for 350 in the old model clearances. 399 tops and even that wouldn't cause it to fly off shelves.

FTR there is already an 'Elite' XBO (old style), comes with Elite controller and (I believe) a hybrid HDD.

Back to my new Xbox, man the setup was painful, it's a games machine - it took me an hour to setup...a brand new console that needs not only a 1GB update but also the controller needed updating...WTH!? Then you need to install any game (fully) before you can play, meaning any new buyer likely has a 1 1/2 hour twiddling thumbs exercise where often it seems the system is broken (hung) - you wait a few mins - then search on the web for a solution and then all of a sudden it's continuing.

One odd thing was the network cable didn't work - in the end I switched with the PS4 cable and it was fine - I did check the connection on PS4 and it was happy with the lead so no idea what was the issue there!?

Anyway, at least I had an external HDD to cushion some of the blow - will be interesting to see how my migration to Pro compares.

Your right, I think the point was it would be hard to make an elite slim at that price point because it then gets compared to ps4 pro.

Nightmare, but I'm not sure how they can get around this due to their continuous /monthly OS updates. But it doesn't give the plug and play experience that your expecting from a console. In this regards definitely showing how much closer to pc's consoles are getting. The controller also has firmware I believe, hence the update for it.

I thought it could play before it had finished installing fully?
But the status updates, I.e. progress of updates etc sounds like it could definitely be improved.

I'm sure not something you would feel like doing but maybe it might be worth reporting this stuff to their feedback/uservoice. May even already be feedback and then I think you just up vote it?

Be interesting what your experience with the ps4p is like also. May be smoother as I don't think it gets such regular updates as xo.

PS is much faster in the setup of both games and OS. It might be because Sonys OS is so light weight since in theory they have the same CPU and hard drive, the only other factor must be size.

For games, Sony is doing something much better. Sadly I don't think we've ever found the reason for it here at B3D. We've been given lip service about it, but I don't think we've ever been able to actually get the nitty gritty. More importantly, I don't know why they haven't been able to speed it up. I hope for their sake this doesn't carry over to their next gen.

^^^ is probably MS serious error with XBO. As an owner, I have gotten used to terrible install times, most often setting things over night, or playing other games while it's installing another game. But for a blank system, it probably horrendous to sit there and wait for the entire system to setup.

Btw: firmware for controllers is amazing. It's a small WTF moment, but it's advantages outweigh the disadvantages for sure.

Their packaging tools need a lot of work.
I'm surprised they haven't created a tool for the devs that monitors data usage whilst loading and running a game and feeds that into how it's packaged.
Those types of metrics could just be built into the standard tools, e.g. when debugging game, and used during packing time.
Given that all games need to be installed, it may be a one off process, but I'm sure it impacts on the overall experience.

Yes, sorry - reading out of context realy. Totally agree about the price point, MS will already bein a 'tough sell' position withot min it harder. And this is some of my compaint against the Scorpio reveal, it's all very well trying to sell slim to get your users into the ecosystem, but come November if MS still haven't given some more clarity I can't see how anyone can make a clear informed choice and reach a positive reason to get a slim (ve Pro) other than loyalty or exclusives.

On PS4 pretty much all games allow you to at least start and get into the game before installation is complete - even for games that download. I recall with FH2, I waited for ages for the game to instal and then got a message saying it needed an update to play and (unlike PS4 games) no option to skip!

It's still a brand new launch machine, a 1GB update seems a bit extreme and I'm confused why a controller would require so many updates!? I will be posting about the Pro, I know I have one issue - the current PS4 has a hybrid HDD and I will likely want that inside the Pro so I'm not really looking forward to that aspect. What I might do is just do a vanila setup to compare. I suppose I could also run with the standard HDD to begin with and migrate a few days down the line...

It's one of the reveal promises that I was really looking forward to and Sony pulled it off, odd that MS can't with all their super software guys.

I have to say, from a PS4 gamer PoV it was a jolt using XBOne - I read often people praise MS for their GUI, ease of use and even some who have migrated and 'never looked back' - I have no clue what those people are on!! lol

If you can't change the firmware the controller is locked.
Since launch of XBO, the firmware changes have enabled the controllers to have new settings, user modifiable settings, change the speeds to how it connects with the console, as well as the type of audio that goes through the controller.
It also ensures that the controller can be forward compatible. You are just getting the latest updates.

But you can have full control over your controller.
Settings -> Kinect and Devices -> Devices ->Controllers -> Mapping/Settings.

Caveat: I have full control over my controller. lol Yay Elite!

last double edit: firmware changes mainly for security. Many old hacks went through the controller, etc. New consoles couldn't work with old controller. So peripherals could not carry forward for X and Y reason. Those are gone with firmware over-write.

ah right, vs the sony solution where you can just switch buttons.

actually, that makes me wish I bought dead rising on XB - the controls are right weird and hard to get used to! lol

they both remap the same, standard controllers remap on the OS. So they lose their remap if you switch device.
Only the elite controller remaps on the controller itself. Meaning I can change devices/consoles and my remaps stay, it holds 2 configurations on device. 256 configurations stored on cloud.

New slim? :D
