Xbox Live ARCADE Games... definitive thread

I couldn't find any info on this in this thread so I decided to post it myself..

I haven't had the chance to purchase any XBLA titles yet but I can be sure that when this one comes out I'll DEFINITELY be picking it up..:-

SUPER STREET FIGHTER II TURBO HD REMIX

Apparently it's using the same code as the original but they're giving the game a whole new look, with Udon Entertainment (the company who did the street fighter comics) working on completely redrawing all the assets to give the game a brand new, updated, HD look..

If the sprites end up anything like the image over on IGN then I'm already jumping off my bones waiting for this!

POP Classic coming to XBLA next week
If only we could manipulate the sands of time.

Ubisoft has sent word that Prince of Persia Classic for the Xbox Live Arcade should be available next week on the download service. Prince of Persia Classic first caught our attention a few weeks ago when Ubisoft revealed the game was coming to the Live Arcade.

The game will feature new enemies, traps and puzzles. The visuals have also seen a marked improvement and will be done in the style of the previous three Prince of Persia titles.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is so good about this new Pacman? I've not played it, yet I have never played a Pacman game that was good for anything other than "retro value".

I'm keeping an open mind here ;) Cheers.

Finally!! I've been waiting more than a decade for them to create new art. :D I wanna see how they change some fireballs. Are they adding more animation frames?

I doubt it considering the time it would take.. There must be hundreds of thousands of frames on animation to redraw as it is, not to mention scenery, effects etc..

Ohhh I hope they can utilise the Pixel Shaders for augmenting the special effects!

I really can't wait for this game..!!

:D

That's true. They'd also have to fit within the 150MB download somehow. Hope they keep the tournament mode. :D

I believe SF ran on the CPS3 (well at least SF III:Third Strike). Did that use a CD or was that ROM based?

It's CD based, but CPS3 was introduced a couple years after SSFIIT (which used CPS2, something like 40MB max, can't recall exactly).

SSFIIT was just under 24MiB I believe. Things could balloon considerably with high resolution art and they'd have to do something about different coloured costumes due to the way they were handled on CPS2. They could use pixel shaders to change the colours, just like how Halo and Halo 2 handled the armour colour for multiplayer.

Prince of Persia is UP on arcade.... DL'ed the trial and was hooked as I suspected.

Unlocked full game 800 pints ($10) and am having a blast. Great controls, good combat very nice graphics and a couple of extra modes once you defeat the game

(Three game modes: Normal Mode requires you to complete the game as fast as possible, with saves at the end of each level. Time Attack has you starting from the beginning if you fail to save the princess after the allotted sixty minutes. And Survival Mode challenges you to complete the entire game without dying. Good luck.)
Prince of Persia® Classic,

also updated first post with up to date arcade info

Edit:
couple of things... analog control only, no Dpad (fine with me as it allows control of pressure sensitive walking running). they added new moves to the controls which are very intuitive and make for a rewarding experience. I can see me racing through in time trial mode as the more I play the more I realize how well it controls. Also graphics are really, really nice for an XBLA game with good animation and cut scenes. Music rocks as expected and there is a nice little touch where when you are hidden from view behind a wall, it slowly becomes translucent to show your character.

POP looks nice, and got me thinking - This game could be redone with live-action footage these days, with storage not a problem. As the animations are very regimented (or were in the original), they could use footage of real actors and cut between animation sequences. Not sure how they'd deal with the lighting though. They could have the same motions filmed in different lighting conditions and blend between them I guess. Might be an idea for some future games now we have download services that have reawakened the simple game. Photo-realism could be a reality!

THAT... would be cool indeed.

No need... It shouldn't be too hard to apply normal maps to each frame of animation and then use those for completely dynamic lighting..

I've played around with applying normal maps to 2D sprites at it works *really* well.. There's even a sample of this on the XNA website which demonstrates how convicning it can be..

That right there would be the cheapest photo-realism in a game ever!!

This weeks XBLA title is Band of Bugs. The developer was also responsible for two other quite original XBLA games (Cloning Clyde, Outpost Kaloki X), so this one is bound to be at least somewhat interesting.
