Xbox Live ARCADE Games... definitive thread

Marathon always makes me reminisce about this struggling tiny Chicago company that was developing for the Mac... and look at them now!

I can't believe there is no love in the thread for yie-ar kung fu, yes I have it on my DS, but so what...of course, looking at my friends list and seeing the complete lack of respect for Pac-Man Championship Edition it's no wonder

:p

LOL, I've got Pac-Man CE. ;) I suck at games, so it's been really hard to get anywhere on it. But I agree it's the best Pac-Man game ever. Would be cool if they could do a Ms. Pac-Man CE version.

As for Marathon, I never heard of it till after I had been playing Halo on the original Xbox. I'm sure I'll check out the demo and see what all the hub-bub is all about. ;)

But of all the Live Arcade titles announced so far, I'm most interested in Wing Commander Arena. I have a special place in my heart for that series. The original WC game came out just after I had just put together my first PC using a kit. Later that year it was the first game I ever played with a Sound Blaster 2.0 and WC2 was first game I ever played that used real voice. Anyway, I'm stoked about WC Arena. I hope the games does great cause it might give EA an excuse to at least re-release WC1&2 for Arcade. I would totally choke on my own spit if they did that! It would give me another excuse to buy that Ace Edge joystick/throttle combo that's coming out for Ace Combat 6. ;)

I would like a mix between pacman ce and the old atari classic Hackman II. That game was nuts.

Yie Ar Kung Fu, I loved that on C64, but I'm afraid I wouldn't like it now so I'll prefer to keep it a memory. Basically that's 8bit Ninja Gaiden though right, if you think about it? :D

I've got all PacMan CE's achievements and I've actually played it again - shows it must be good! :p

ok total disappointment for me

Ecco is a sprite fest... WTF... where is my smooth HD upgrade? i was really looking forward to this as an HD version like Prince of Persia or Jetpac... :devilish:

I was wondering when your nostalgia was going to wear off, but I didn't want to say anything. I was just mentioning to the guys that Ecco...yeah...but it's not the first Arcade title I won't buy...my streak stopped a long time ago. I don't think I'm king of Arcade anymore, ;)

even the sound is directly from the genesis version.

Damn you SEGA! :devilish:

;)

I downloaded Sonic the other day and it even says that its emulation. So, yeah, Genesis games are going to come stright from the original ROM by the looks of it, bar some tweaking for adding achievements.

*prays for Shadowrun*

Though I guess Sega would need permission from MS to do it now that they own the IP, right :?:

Anyone here get Hexic 2? I'm really enjoying it. Minus the fact that the colors are kind of lame, it's a huge improvement over the original.

Don't forget that Street Trace NYC is also coming out...

Street Trace:NYC™ is fast-paced street racing and arena combat set against a grim futuristic corporate-controlled environment. Choose one of nine hoverboard-riding street soldiers to carve a plasma trail as you battle and grind through six areas, including abandoned highways and war-torn arenas. Play all of the seven different games in tournaments or exhibition matches, and upgrade your hoverboard and weapons as you play. Master the trials of the Single Player Campaign or compete with up to four players split-screen or up to eight online via Xbox LIVE®.

  • A different kind of racing: Race and battle your opponents on decked-out hoverboards in three different arenas and three different street circuits. Grind your hoverboard along metal rails to gain an advantage. Your board's emissions give passing players a strategic speed boost, allowing those falling behind to rubber-band off the race leaders.
  • Numerous game modes: Take on the single player campaign with 18 time trials and five champion tournaments, or go multiplayer with four-player split-screen or up to eight players on Xbox LIVE. Choose from four different arena game types, Flag, Hunter, Chaos, and Takedown, and from three different street game types, Screamer, Chaos, and Street Trace.
  • Multiplayer join-in-progress: The Street Trace:NYC lobby shows how many people are playing online, allows players to join tournaments in progress, and to follow games as they progress.
  • Decked-out hoverboards: Upgrade your board's engine, boost, shields and jump capabilities, and use weapons such as lasers, mines, stampede, and rockets. Gotta love rockets.
  • Game goals: Earn your spot on the Leaderboards, and gain twelve new Achievements to increase your Gamerscore.

BTW, Space Giraffe got reamed by Dan Amrich in Oct. 07 OXM issue. He gave it a 2.0 out of 10.

Here's the "Verdict" at the end of the review:

+(plus) Unlike anything you've ever seen (except Tempest).
-(minus) Too visually noisy to figure out what's going on.
-(minus) Actually made us angry when we played it.
?(questionable) Is this a failed game or a failed art experiment?

To be fair to Jeff Minter I think Dan did a disservice with his review. You'll know what I mean after reading "Yak" aka Jeff Minter's comments below:

And then you get it. And then you’re fucked because you realize you’re in love. Deeply, passionately, desperately. The only thing you can do is try your best to hold on for the ride, climb up the high score table and maybe one day get on top.

space giraffe gave me a seizure. it was awesome.

the gameplay's actually very good but it's an incredibly laid back game. it's kind of similar to flow in that you can die but you don't really worry too much about how much progress you're making. it's just a fun trance experience.

street trace is boring.
