Xbox 360 slim hardware thread

I see the new model xbox is currently #1 at amazon
xbox should have a very good june NPD

OK I agree you shouldnt move a machine with a spinning disc, but what about discman's, car CD players etc they seem to work reasonably well, so its certainly possible to have a machine that is able to be moved.

Portable CD players don't spin at thousands of RPM....at those speeds the disc becomes a gyroscope and doesn't like to be moved. With that said you could certainly make DVD drives that don't scratch DVDs when moved, just look at the DVD drives for laptops.

Yeah not too mention the price cuts on the old models providing a temporary boost. I saw them marked down at Wal Mart today. A Arcade for 149 is pretty crazy, even the Elite, because it currently comes with ODST and Forza 3 for 249, is kinda crazy. And at launch people were paying 399 for a 20G HDD and no game. I dont see MS losing NPD to PS3 the rest of the year really (May should be in the bag due to PS3 shortages), barring a PS3 price cut. Of course worldwide sales are another story.

Anyways I totally forgot about the new chips in this model. It's supposed to have CPU+GPU combined at 45nm? Cant wait for the Anand or whoever teardown.

I'm an idiot... selling my step son's 2 mo old Jasper arcade (w/HDD) and giving my 3 mo old Jasper elite to step son to get this Friday.

I'm thinking of doing something similar...ebaying my Elite...

Kind of leaning against it though, might as well piss away $100. I dont even need the wi-fi..

I bet a lot of the sales of these new slim models are repeat buyers though...sort of like how Apple gets everybody to upgrade their iPhone every year..

They run at 1x. The DVD drive on the 360 runs at 12x. However, with the addition of a couple of small rubbery bits, they could mostly eliminate the damage resulting from moving the device. Would still not be a good idea, but it wouldn't destroy the disc if you did it.

I saw a teardown years ago of the 360 drive and a PC drive, and the only difference was a couple of spongey bits. I believe the article mounted the buffers onto the 360 drive and it "fixed" it.

@ ha ha: I use a 60GB and that works fine. 250GB is over the hill overkill.

Like all my HDD based game machines be it the 360 or PC I usually delete games I beat or get tired of. When I get the itch to replay them months or years later I reinstall and repeat the process. I save tons of space on my 120GB elite. I think now since MS is offering users to buy movies and tv shows, it will one day cause me to buy bigger hdds.

I totally agree and Im a sucker for this stuff. But in the end its fun to have new gadgets and hardware to play with. Like with my pc the only things that usually get swapped out are my gpus. Then maybe every three years I will upgrade the cpu, ram and motherboard.

Since my 360 Elite is warrantied till May 2011, if I can fight the upgrade itch Im planning on getting the new 360 around that timeframe. If I cant fight the itch Ill sell my elite on ebay and pay the difference. The biggest factor for me is noise, wifi, hopefull rrod-proof and bigger hdd. Too bad they didnt add a new boot up logo. Its all good though.

Yeah it's not like the dude shook the unit, a little too sensitive for sure.

This is another reason why you install games to the HDD, then the only time the disc is accessed on the xbox360 is when it verifies a few Security Sectors before it launches the game.

power consumption

btw on xbox-scene reported that power consumption go down from Jasper 150W to 135W on this new xbox 360. (valhalla?)

and the standby go from 2W to 1W.

135W is huge for something with the 360's specs.

I have a laptop with a 2.1GHz C2D that is build on 45nm and a GTX 260M (which is about 2x as powerful as the 360's GPU) on 55nm and it uses about 100W max! (and that is including the screen and all).

Yep. Worked for PSone and PStwo too. That actually messes up the demographics somewhat, in that the consoles are passed on, but not necessarily to gamers who'll buy games. So where the install base expands, I don't think the software and peripheral market expands 1:1 with it. Mutlifunctionality should mean more revenue though, as maybe less gaming types who find themselves with a console will start buying into media even if they don't buy games, instead playing friends' libraries.

hmm. it eat 135W maybe because it also can power Project Natal from AUX cable? but its weird, looks like the 135W is from the system only. without natal plugged in.

btw, the old xbox will need seperate power cable to wall outlet. (to power natal)

Yeh, I totally imagined (a lot) less. PS3's power consumption has more than halved since launch (200+ down to 100 or less), and 360s only go from ~185W to 150, and now 135? That sounds weird. I hope these figures have it wrong somehow.

Is there a fan still in the power brick? I noticed there's a couple vents on it, but nowhere as many as with the current brick. Seems the vents are too small for passive cooling only, unless the PSU is HELLA efficient. :)

I expect new Xbox 360 to "eat" no more than 100W.
I think CPU + GPU is integrated with a smaller manufacturing process.
From Falcon to Jasper by changing manufacturing of a vital component to a smaller process we had a downcrease from 175W to 150W.

We even have one less fan in this new model;)

^^ yeah it seems on this new shiny black xbox 360 only use one big fan.

really hoped it is really very quiete just like many website says.
my old falcon xbox 360 (now already dead) is just too noisy, even when i play game from HDD it is still too noisy.
