Anyone else noticed that windows can't find shit anymore when searching from the start menu? What in the holy fuck is up with that!

I enter "calc", and it says "no results found" (or whatever). If I type "calc.exe" it shows the godcursed calculator.

What the hell.

It's the same shit no matter what I type. It seems it only searches in my files and related subfolders or something, and that's why there's no hits for anything. No idea what fucking use the godfucked indexing service is fucking good for when it still doesn't fucking find anything when looking for stuff. This has happened all through upgrade installs, clean re-installs (more than once), and on two different PCs running different editions of windows 10, so I assume it's the same nonsense for everyone.

Yes... with my files too sometimes, it makes me have to search for things six different ways just to make sure.

edit But the last time I think I did it was before the win10 upgrade, should check on it now.

On start type index. Open the index desktop app. Then you can manually add c user appdata roaming Microsoft Windows startmenu. Add for allusers, current users, other users don't need to be added

Nope. Maybe there is an indexer setting, or rebuild option?

From my experience with overloaded start menu that hit the windows 10 512 limit, Windows suddenly removed the start menu from index. That's why I suggest him to check the indexing option.

@Grall I had that issue shortly after I started using Windows 10. I think it was related to me trying to nerf the spyware settings when I first installed it. If that's what you did, go through the process again and check you've not disabled search.

The latest version of W10 now allows you to activate using your W7 key? I'm buying a Samsung 850 Evo this week and I will probably make the jump to 10 but I don't want to bother with first upgrading W7 just to have to do a fresh install after that.

I installed 10 in a VM last week and performance seems pretty good. Even on my laptop with only 1gb of ram assigned to the VM it boots quite a bit faster than the W7 install on my main pc. Its running a bit more stuff in the background but not that much. And it has 16gb of ram and a core i7.

I think I can live with the new start menu. It's kinda stupid that you can do the right click thingy on the Windows icon to access a lot of stuff though. MS should just give users to option to revert back to a W7 style start menu with W10 styling. The programs list sucks though, way too cluttered having everything under a letter.

Another thing I don't like is the amount of shit you can't easily uninstall. Why do I have to use powershell to uninstall something like skype?

Then, ofcourse, there is all the "spying". I've started playing around with pfsense recently and when pointing my W10 VM to that I got about a 1000 hits in 24 hours on MS related ip's on a fresh W10 install, no additional software installed, not doing anything with it. I'm not overly paranoid but that seems rather excessive to me for something that isn't supposed to spy on you.

Following the many guides online to block/remove stuff I'm now down to about 30 hits over 24 hours. About 1/3 of that is Windows update related. Not sure about the rest yet.

Any stuff that is really broken on W10 at the moment? I don't really use my pc for anything other than browsing and gaming. As long as that works and I can easily switch from my monitor to my TV and receiver (love windows key + p) than all is good.

PS anyone has experience with W10 and bitlocker? How much of a drag is it to setup? I've never used it before but reading online it seems it can be a bit annoying.

Well disabling as much as possible might save you some time as you won't have to keep updating ip's for those applications in case they change or if MS adds additional servers.

That said I'm considering installing whatever the most secure linux distro might be on a old disk and just use that for stuff like banking. That once or twice a month booting into linux isn't a massive bother. Other than that I don't care MS is logging me saying they can all suck my slong or what websites I visit. Google already knows that anyway.

MS logs every website you visit via win10, even if you don't use a MS browser...?

I don't know how that would even be legal.

That feels stupid but if done with Powershell, I guess you can have a script ready and double-click it. Or a post-installation script that does this and a few little things.
Scripts are the way to go to rein in things, e.g. I ought to look for a (serious, vetted) script to download for Windows 7, to remove the Windows 10 advertisment and "telemetry" updates.

Bought a Lumia 950XL yesterday and I get to see universal apps in action and seems to work very well. XBOX app and Win 10 Solitaire are exactly the same build number (after an update from the store) and have the same capabilities. The only different is that the apps start in a portrait friendly manner on the phone and a landscape friendly manner on the PC. Hopefully there will be a lot more of these apps coming.
I got a Lumia 635 a couple of weeks ago after having an Android for years now, and well....I don't want to turn back to Android -iOS I fancy a bit more-. The integration is great with Windows -8 or 10-, I can easily copy and paste and move files around between the phone and the PC with no hassle, no drivers at all, no extra programs, and that helps a lot with my studies.

I do the hard work on the PC, use Word and Excel for the notes in class, to summarize them, then I change the background colour of the text with Word to great colours to study like Honeybell (RGB Red 252, Green 189, Blue 108 http://encycolorpedia.com/search?q=honeybell ) or Mexicale Turquoise (RGB Red 121, Green 207, Blue 205), colours that psychologists say are perfect for rooms to study.

Then I send the formatted text as a PDF to my Lumia and I study there. The screen is small, of course, but I study with the phone close to my eyes. Actually, since I was born myopic that works for me the best, because seeing things from short distances is my thing. The method is working really well, 'cos my marks are over 9 overall, :) save in one subject which is more about the practical side of things. .

I think Windows 95 had the search feature right.
I installed Windows 95 today using VirtualBox, out of nostalgia, 'cos it was my 1st OS ever and damn is it fast. I also installed Windows 2000 -got both ISO files here, in this great abandonware webpage: https://winworldpc.com/library which features OSes from IBM, Microsoft, Apple, and others)... I did so to play around and listen to the song "Good Times" again -also featured in the ISO file, of course, like the regular W95 CD-:

I gotta admit I had a prepubescent crush on the singer. :D

After playing around a bit, with Windows 10 in the background, I still love the look of Windows 95, but it looks a lot more drab compared to W10, so does Windows 2000.

My only issue with Windows 10 was the dreaded DPC Watchdog Violation which happened to me several times, but it never happens again after the November update, so I don't miss Windows 8 now -a favourite OS of mine despite criticism, worked like a charm for me from day one-. I can't say the same about Edge though, it does need to improve quite a bit, fortunately there is Opera.
