I'm a bit worried that there is a Release Date but no Release Candidate yet, still pretty significant changes happening in Development Builds.
Pretty sure they had Release Candidates for a bunch of months before Win7/8 launches.
It will be released with a lot of bugs.
Yay for Windows update.

One of my main concerns is being able to do a fresh install.
  • Do I get a product key that I can use to do a fresh install from USB?
  • I have a full Upgrade package for Windows 7 which can transfer to a new PC, can I transfer my Windows 10 upgrade to a new PC as well? Obviously as a PC gamer I change various hardware so I don't use OEM versions due to this.
My laptop came with Windows 7 installed.

I purchased Windows 8 some time afterwards, and it asked me whether I wanted to perform a fresh (clean) install or keep all the legacy software. Is it what you are asking?

From my experience though, I could use that OS in said laptop, but not on another PC.

Got the pop up and reserved. Can't wait!
Same here, I got it yesterday's morning.

Yeah, they're rushing this one like a son of a bitch. Hope it doesn't bite them too bad, because the last thing they want - or need - is their new fancy-pants holy savior of an OS tainted like windows vista was. :p

Fresh install wiping the hard drive clean and starting again. I haven't "upgraded" an OS since maybe Windows 95? Windows 10 will probably be my first upgrade in that long mainly because it doesn't seem I have a choice. It's a Windows Update.

Apparently you can do a clean "reset" once you have upgraded, mobile os style. So I guess you have to install W7 or 8 first and then upgrade. It would make sense that they will get rid of this step at some point.

Indeed.
Also we don't want to break the 'every 2nd Startrek movie Windows version are good' rule of thumb.

Ah okay. When I installed Windows 8 Pro on Windows 7, via purchase on the store -I got it on sale during the first months after the OS was launched for 30€- the install options included a recommended one -keeping the content of the previous OS and its associated programs and stuff- and another one warning me that the installation would wipe all the documents, pictures, videos, etc etc etc from the previous version of Windows, the registry as well and would uninstall everything.

The installation advised you to make a backup. I think they didnt mean a full HD wipe, but there isnt much of a difference, if any, imho.

First Window 10 hardware revealed.

It seems they released new update. It works now.
Amg wow. Just because of your post, in a fit of near hysteria I ran off and booted up my old rig, ran a check for updates, installed them, rebooted, and yay it worked this time!!! Wheee!!!

(God help me lol)

Okay, so I exaggerated a little, but yeah. My 2nd copy of Win10 is now reserved. Makes me wish I'd kept one of my old WinXP clunkers too! ;) I had a P4-Willamette 1.7GHz Dell Dimension, with a whopping 512MB DRDRAM and a 64MB Geforce 3 in it up until say, a year ago or maybe even longer, when I finally tired of having it standing around in my apartment, collecting dust. Not that I think it would have been eligible anyway, but... I had sentimental ties to that box, it was well built, even though the first-gen P4 CPU sucked donkey schlong and RAM was overly expensive at the time (and much more so once it became obsolete...)

In all seriousness, you need at least the NX bit and thus a late Pentium 4 or Celeron Pentium 4 ; almost all which have NX bit have 64bit enabled too.

As far as I understand the 3D accelerated desktop is mandatory on Windows 8 and 10? so I don't know what happens if you boot it with a less than DX9 card, a card without driver or god forbid a card that only does 2D.

There is a 2D fallback. You'll see this if your display driver crashes and Windows isn't able to recover it.

It looks like Windows 10 also supports the older Intel predecessor to NX, the "XD" (execute disable) bit. I know this, because Windows 10 is running on my wife's super-antiquated Atom N270-based Dell Mini10v which only supports the XD method. This also means that 64-bit isn't required.

All of this means that Prescott s478 processors should function properly with Win10. Since I actually have such a rig at home right now, I'll fire that bad bastard up and see how it works over the weekend.

Edit: Wait, nope. Not on s478...
I thought about it for a minute, and then hit up ARK to verify. There isn't any NX/XD support on s478 at all, only on a few of the LGA775 Prescotts. Soooooooo, if you've got one of the right (newer) Prescotts, the answer may still be a "yes". It isn't going to help my super-duper-old s478 rig though.
