Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

Lower TCO, better service (constantly updated) and better freedom of choice (yes, really !); The high up front cost of acquiring a new version in the existing model is a barrier to upgrading.

I would rather take a short term consumer loan (in the US, that would be a credit card) rather than have an automatic recurring fee that costs money to cancel or not much better, deal with fake money ("points", windows store balance).
Heck, if they do give up the model of either selling an "OEM" or a "box" version to the consumer, it would be better to walk in a store and buy a hard copy with about 100 euros in cash.

Perhaps you need a Microsoft account for the "free upgrade", I don't know. I value logging in to my computer without logging in to microsoft or google, so we'll see, perhaps it is upgradeable with the option for not creating an online account semi-hidden :smile2:. I haven't had a need for a hotmail or live etc. address since they shut down MSN.

How useful is the developer setting in Windows 10 BTW? I want to be able to sideload, but I don't want to have a completely crippled security model because of it (it's not a necessary side effect ... they can just allow you to add your own certificates to verify drivers/apps).

MS is putting their eggs in Store- and Bing-baskets for continued Windows revenue, as I explained earlier. And yes, this is straight from MS, they already went public with it.
Is there any possibility of Microsoft (and Apple) starting in a few years to use their App Stores as the only software delivery system allowed for their desktop OSes (just like Apple does today with iOS)?
IMO that would be worse than subscription.

No, there's no possibility for that (at least not for MS, Apple could be able to pull it off as to my understanding there really isn't that many online software stores for Mac)

The Metro API is already essentially locked to the store, they will be permissive with the developer setting in Windows 10 so everyone who wants to can sideload (although they might cripple security to make it very unattractive) but you can't really tell customers to do that.

Microsoft; "How we're winning gamer's trust back with our long term Xbox One plans"
A link to an article with no substance. I suggest people avoid it. It just says, "yeah, GFWL was crap but this time we're going to be awesome."

Yeah, but Metro/Modern UI Apps were and are only small portion of Windows apps

Yeah they have a long, long way to go before they win back PC gamers trust. I think he may be underestimating just how far. At this point I think nothing short of a fully intergrated gaming interface built into W10 that is directly comparable to that of the XBO plus the release of several high profile xbox exclusives (say the masterchief collection and something similar for Gears or War) will cut it.

Doesn't really matter though. Window 10 is coming, it will have a store, and people will have experience of it and adapt based on what it is rather than what some older iteration was. May take longer than building on a big success, but it'll still succeed/fail on its own merits.

I don't understand what the problem is with the article. Spencer says they have to earn back the trust of gamers because of GFWL.

You are a bit too exigent and nitpicky, aren't you?

I may be willing to trust them for less than I state above but they'll have to do something first. So far Microsoft have delivered nothing for PC gaming aside from the upcoming DX12 and even that was forced on them by AMD. Hell they haven't even properly released the XBO control pad for the PC yet after what, 18 months? They need to stop talking and start acting or shut the hell up.

? Don't you just install the driver?

Install the Windows10 preview and look at the Xbox App. It's not like it's a mystery what they're doing in Preview. They are matching Xbox One, feature for feature.

Maybe he's referring to the lack of a wireless dongle? Having that would be nice.
If wireless is absolutely critical then an option is to use a DualShock 4, I have one of my setup wirelessly to my iMac running Windows. I will only play Dying Light on PC with a DS4 pad.
