Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

After a 9 month pause deicided to try the latest Insider build, that is said to be feature complete for the April update.
  • Task Bar doesn't register right clicks at all.
  • Context menu that opens when right clicking the Start button doesn't include Control Panel anymore.
  • Opening Devices crashes the Settings app.
  • Notification icon doesn't really open Action Center, only some empty blurry window.

Yeah it's alpha software. That is kind of the point..
Unfortunately the transition from "alpha" to "release" is not quality based, but calendar based. For example "start button will not respond" was quite annoying problem to have with suppsedly release-quality-Win10Pro-s.

I'm always interested in trying a new browser; might try Opera / Vivaldi now just for grins. Last time I tried Opera it wasn't "bad", but it wasn't convincing enough to make me leave Chrome. This was probably 3-4 years ago though...
I've been using Opera on Android for years. I see it as the better Chromium option. ;) It's fast and it has the right features for me. Firefox is crap on there unless you have massive CPU power, and Chrome is too basic.

Windows Opera isn't as interesting though IMO.

Opera and Vivaldi are not the same

Edge is starting to borrow some ideas from Opera in the latest versions.
I switched to Opera and Vivaldi as of recently, after a long time dealing with some issues in Edge. Vivaldi has been the most stable for me, Opera did freeze a couple of times for no reason. Edge is uffff....and there are a few important things to improve.

Problem...My laptop's CPU is just a 1.6GHz CPU a Celeron N3050, and whether it is intentional or not, Opera and Vivaldi play youtube videos quite badly, the framerate is so choppy and I don't know why --maybe because my pagefile.sys and swapfile.sys are in C:? and I have very little space left there since I created a very small C partition that takes up just 75GB of memory.

Edge plays youtube videos very smoothly, at 30 fps or 60 fps, so I might return to Edge despite being quite tired of some buggy stuff.

Opera has always been crap at hardware acceleration compared to both IE and Edge. They have improved lately, but I guess not enough for your laptop.

Right-click on youtube video ->Stats. Vivaldi probably playing vp9 and Edge is getting H264 (hardware accelerated).
Install h264ify extension.

I thoought it was macromedia that was responsible for the hardware acceleration not opera since its the flash plugin enables it

Who in their right mind even has Flash installed in this day and age?

Why would it need to fallback to a flash container?
Ive no idea but flash occasionally tells me theres an update available and it takes me to macromedia's websire

Who in their right mind even has Flash installed in this day and age?
because a lot of internet video is in flv format

Edit:
Ive just disabled flash in opera I will test to see if I can live without it
If only all websites worked without javascript

any idea how to make Windows 10 displays verboose information at boot? basically making it like windows 95 with those lots of texts on boot?

so when windows get stuck at boot with useless error messages, i can easily find the problem. rather than stabbing in the dark and test various fix one by one. or just nuking it with reinstall.

I found a useful, free, tool today for quickly getting to the message/meaning of a Windows 10 BSOD/memory dump.

Looks like it's "shit happens, this one isn't a big deal". Nice to know! Might be my utility that uses memory as a read/write cache, and spare space on a SSD to cache reads on spinner hard drives. Or the dozen Firefox tabs I had open for hours. Well, I'm hoping it's just software! I recently found a good fix for a different problem.

Hello,

This error may occur due to the iastor.sys driver, which is not fully compatible with Windows 10.

Microsoft is currently investigating a solution to prevent the driver from being migrated when upgrading to Windows 10. For those of you already on Windows 10, you can work around this error by replacing the problematic driver with the Microsoft storahci.sys driver by following these steps:

  1. Right-click the Start icon and select Device Manager.

  2. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

  3. Select the controller with “SATA AHCI” in its name (such as Standard SATA AHCI Controller). To verify that you’ve selected the right controller, right-click the controller, select Properties, click the Driver tab, and then Driver Details. Verify that iastor.sys is a listed driver, and click OK.

  4. From the Driver tab, select Update Driver…

  5. Select Browse my computer for driver software.

  6. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

  7. Select Standard SATA AHCI Controller.
Click Next, then Close, and then restart your computer.

Crash Dump Analysis
Crash dump directory: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\021817-29812-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x1F5C0C)
Bugcheck code: 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8017BC0AC0C, 0xFFFFC180E35FF0A8, 0xFFFFC180E35FE8D0)
Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This indicates that a system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

Conclusion
2 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. No offending third party drivers have been found. Connsider using WhoCrashed Professional which offers more detailed analysis using symbol resolution. Also configuring your system to produce a full memory dump may help you.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

have you tried pressing F8 before the OS starts running? Maybe that could help. I barely used that menu, but now that you mention it, sometimes I'd like to have the simplicity of Windows 95 and modern robustness, there is too much information and multimedia on screen, starting from the image of the day thing.

@Davros you need to step out of the 90's
Let's try an experiment. I don't really know if this is caused by lack of flash support but now is the perfect time to find out:

On your PC with flash support, go on youtube and search for "only solutions journey" ("Only Solutions" song recorded by Journey, part of TRON's soundtrack). You should get 7 or so videos with the song/lyrics.

Now do the same on iOS. At least on my iPad I get nothing. If I use youtube through Safari I get no results, and if I use the YouTube or the Tubie apps then I get the thumbnails of the 7 or so videos in the results, but I get a "This video is not available" message when I try to play them.

Never tried on Android nor on a PC without flash support. So I may be wrong.

Works perfectly in Edge without Flash.
