Wii impression thread

Hey guys. =)

I waltzed into the eb friday morning and got my PS3. Promptly took it to a storage unit and locked it up.

Just got home after a night out in front of Target. Me and three other firends all got Wiis. We went to Mike's house and set the thing up. Extremly underwhelming. The sports game is a poor demonstration of the remote. The channels are essentially a whole lot of nothing.

We threw in Zelda and while it is a very pretty game, the graphics are still a kick in the nuts. Playing low res and letterboxed on an hdtv is a little.... well I'm sure you can imagine, getting the thing home and essentially plugging in a gamecube.

On the other hand, the game (Zelda) itself appears to be excellent. Seeing Zelda presented in the new style is almost surreal. Feels wrong at first. Feels a little like RE 4. Beautiful, overall. To bad I couldn't just get the gamecube one right now. Then I could have been more pleased with the graphics.

I have to say, I hate to harp on the graphics, but looking at wii sports is just painfull. Sub-n64 quality, no joke. I'm actually glad to have only a mediocre sdtv at the moment becasue it prevents me from tearing open the PS3.

I like my Wii so far. It's cute and the price was right. It was fun waiting in line with all my geek brothers. But objectivly it's not very impressive.

Simply makes no sense to me. I can think of no reason why'd you buy a system and then return because you/your kid doesnt like one game.
Presumably if he returns it now, he gets a full trade in. If he buys more games and spends time evaluating the platform, chances are the value of the machine drops considerably so if he makes a return, he's lost money.
You're also stating games now when you've not shared you're experience or expressed before that you've played anything more than Wii Sports.
Wii Sports should be a good indicator whether you like playing with the Wiimote in a wave-it-around method or not. And if you don't like that method, and are planning on a PS3 for sure, much of the rest of Wii's abilities I think are covered and there's probably not much reason to keep the machine, other than exclusives.

All you do is wave the Wiimote around in Wii Sports, that's pretty much the end of it. If you're thinking that the entire game collection on the Wii is that way then you're sadly mistaken. Zelda for example is not played in that way at all. I'm sorry, but its just out right stupid to judge an entire console on a "game" such as Wii Sports. Its only purpose is to show quickly how the Wiimote can be used, but in no way is it the limit of its abilities and in no way is it a complete demostration of the entire console.

Dunchan don't feel like we are attacking you. If you made up your mind it's fine, but we are here to argue and you should spect this from us.

This is the first day the Wii has gone on sale and it seems rather unusual for someone to decide so soon, specially having tried a single game and considering how hard it will be for you to get one if you change your mind.

Well that's cool. you know how sometimes you really thing something going to be cool then only after trying it - not so cool. Well that's how this one was. He could not wait to play a baseball game that you have to swing like real players - which he is. The baseball game swing was unnatural. baseball player like my boy may also expect more from wii. So you could see why someone like him would not like it.

How long does it take for a person to know whether they like Marmite or blue cheese? ;)

There's always the situation where a new thing sometimes feels odd and uncomfortable, and if you persevere with it you learn to appreciate it, and maybe like it, or maybe dislike it but for particular reasons. And then there's the situation where you're just not taken with something. In my case, I'd never buy a product without being confident I'd like it. In Wii's case, I'll have played a friend's long before I ever bought my own!

Some people just wont like something for some reason.

Take the guy who bought a PS3 just to smash it for example.

Of course it isn't. But if you don't like Wii Sports nor Zelda, and the other games out don't take your fancy, why keep the console? Wouldn't it make more sense to take it back, get your money back, and then at a later date give it another go when there's more software out and a better impression from reviews? For those saying 'it won't be long before an MLB game is out,' sure. Maybe that game will be a huge hit as it plays very naturally. But if you wait for that game, and then don't like it (perhaps swinging a virtual bat suffers from 'uncanny valley' in being close enough to the real experience to really aggravate that there's physical hitting through the ball, for example), you've lost money on the console.

If you buy a product and don't like it straight away, is it better to get you money back immediately with the option of always trying again at a later date, or hold onto the product in the hopes it gets better later with the possibility you still don't like it then and have lost some money? The only reason to keep the machine is if you can't get a full refund. If you are stuck having spent $100 whether you return it the following day or in a few month's time, you may as well hold onto it for a while and maybe rent or borrow some games to try it out some more.

Okay, I see you're point, even if you're assuming stuff that was not said. IMO a bit more research should have been done, but oh well.

Yeah, That hurts but its his money. I remember when I was a kid I when over to my aunt house and her husband had all this cool star wars toys in in their packages. My did not have any other toys at her home so she said we could play with them. So we did and her husband had a heartattack!

It's pretty good, gonna go and try to find a copy of Zelda now.

one sad thing about my Wii though... the cool blue disc light isn't working right... I just get a quick (1/30th of a second or so) at startup. :( time to call 1-800 my wi... or whatever...

(note -- it has never flashed except for at that time... accoriding to Ninty's faq, its supposed to flash when you load a disc also...)

If you are talking about smash my PS3. Its no indication in what system they like, only thing it shows is that the people who donate don't like PS3 for who knows what reason. Maybe sony is the devil?!?!

I'm not even sure if Smash my Wii/PS3/Xbox360 guys are even gamers to begin with. They just do it because people are willing to donate and they most likely earn some cash while at it.

I guess my biggest gripe about someone returning their console right away is that people like me, a huge Nintendo fan with no worries of not liking Zelda or the console (even if they were horrible I wouldn't admit it), spent hours trying to get one and couldn't. Seems like a shame.

Well I got the Wii mostly for the wife and kids and so far they have are a blast. We picked up two games (RRabbits and Zelda) but so fat the kids have been doing nothing but playing Wii sports. They love it. And it they love it I love it. No complaints about the graphics from anyone either. Just because they are simplistic does not mean they are bad and I feel the Wii sports graphics are fine for what they are trying to acheive.

Now all I have to do is wait for the kids to go to bed so I can check out Zelda.....

I guess it might make you even angrier the fact that it's widely available from numerous retailers in my godforsaken country of Chile. It's pretty expensive though, at US$ 434 including 19% sales tax at the current exchange rate. They were running preorders, but I guess there wasn't enough interest since I called and they have told me I could just go and pick one up if I wanted (at that price I really don't). It's the same story in other retailers where the Wii is plenty available, the PS3 on the other hand...not so much.

Here's the link to 1 store in case you're interested.

Okay I've had it plugged in for most of the day now. It has been off for about 6 hours. The casing is quite warm in my cold room. So, whatever standby is, it's definitely got something powered up in there.

I would expect that to be the case, even if it uses very little power during stand by. The fact that the case is so small means even the tinest amount of heat can warm the unit.

I find it fascinating that they went with 802.11b but still supported WPA2 AES. :) I was confused as to why I couldn't connect and then realized I had my WRT set for G-only.

BTW, I'm horribly annoyed that they changed the AV plug. My main TV's composite video died years ago so I always use SVid on it. But, my trusty SVid SNES/Cube/N64 wires don't work with Wii. Grr...

blue light

So I was told on some other forum that the blue light around the disc slot is not supposed to be on. I would rather be given the choice to turn it off. Mine just flashes very quickly when I turn the Wii on. Is this a malfunction or is it really supposed to stay off.

Is everyone elses Wii doing this.

Anybody else slightly dissapointed with how the wiimote works in games?

i was utterly dissapointed by the controlscheme. If it required me to actually do things right, you know like in real life, i would have liked it, but it doesnt. If it just requires me to flip my wrist, then frankly that no better than just clicking a button on the gamepad.

Take tennis and golfing for example, i played on the age restricted national tennis teams back in the day, so i know my way around a tennis racket. I also got a handicap of 8 in golf, so im pretty decent at that. How am i gonna play some tennis game on the wii? Well, as i would play tennis in real life, that the whole point right? If you watch the commercials anywas..

Turns out, if i do this, all my normal forehand\backhand shots are registered as lobs. (Because a proper tennis shot with a little forespin to it, is a circular, upwards motion). Golf, same thing, my swings get registered as something comepletely different than reality (puts are okay tho).

I was really exited about the controlls and how they will add another "dimension" to gaming, because i felt that the controls allways could be upgraded upon, but after playing about 2 hours of Red Steel, i end up with the feeling that this is just a gimmick. Aiming in itself isnt a problem, but turning around and doing certain stuff like f. eks zooming (trusting the wiimote forward) is just bad. Very bad. The aiming certainly doesnt have any edge over what i can do with dual analogs on the X360, or with a PC\Mouse setup.

The main thing i was exited about was swordfighting games with the wiimote. Sadly both Zelda and Red Steel have failed at delivering a good experience with this. In Zelda the swords moves hardly represent my movements, same goes for Red Steel, only its even worse, you cannot trust, everything is just scripted moves, it doesnt matter if im a master swordfighter in real life and know how to handle a katana (not that i do), you get the exact same effect sitting on the couch, flicking your wrist in the general slashing motion as you would from standing up and actually taking swings. In Zelda, im actually confident that i would be more happy with the GC version, the "enchanced" controlling scheme certainly isnt worth the money that you have to pay for a Wii, compared to what i would have to pay for a used GC + Zelda.

So for now, in my opinion, the control scheme is gimmicky, poorly executed, and is only fun for the first 1-2 hours, its probably fun when your drunk and got 3 more friends over, but when im drunk im usually not sitting at home playing video games anyway.

However, i can see why kids like it, and nintendo will allways be, imo, the best console for kids. Cheap, lots of minigames and the new controller makes the learning curve virtually non existant compared to learning how to handle dual analogs. Is the Wii anygood for fairly serious gamer like me? No not a chance. There are far to few of thouse great games that really want me to have a nintendo system, and if i add in the fact that SDTV signals look like complete and utter crap on my HDTV, i reckon that i will never own this system myself, unless ofcourse later games will have a much better control scheme.
