June 21, 2005 - Microsoft wants the Xbox 360 to sell 10 million units in its first 12 to 16 months, according to comments by Peter Moore, Microsoft's corporate VP of Marketing and Publishing, at the International Games Summit in London.

Moore hesitated to predict where Xbox 360 would stand by the time Sony's PlayStation 3 arrives, given that Sony has not announced a specific release time. However, Microsoft understands the importance of launch momentum.

"We don't know exactly when PS3 will launch, and I'm not making an official forecast for the 360," MVC reports Moore as saying, "but we do know that there is a target of the first 10 million units when you launch a new format."

I def think that is doable . This is about what the ps2 did in its first year world wide. Since ms has the launch advantage they may be able to get to 6 or so by the end of 2005 depending on how many they can make

Easily achievable IMO. At least by shipments.

Two holiday seasons for all 3 regions. Whereas the PS2 only had one holiday season and the Japanese launch was 7 months before the US and Europe was a month after that. And US & Europe were both EXTREMELY constrained by supply issues.

As long as Microsoft can make enough...

6m by the end of 05? 6m in less than 2 months?

I know you're optimistic about X360 but seriously.. ;)

Well he has come down a bit, because a while go he thought it would be possible for MS to sell 10 million before the end of 2005.

they could give it free if you sign a LIVE GOLD contract for 30months with 15us$/month (like mobile phone contracts in some countrys)

Personally, I'll be surprised if they hit that number. MS seems to believe that simply launching first, with little in the way of impactful software, equates to free sales.

The core audience that will purchase the 360 from its launch to the PS3's launch are mainly individuals that will end up buying a PS3 as well anyways. And if MS believes that Sony isn't going to let the casual audience know that they should wait for the PS3 in a few months, MS is in for a rude surprise.

I don't want to say it, but this is EXACTLY what went down with the DC. Sega took Sony for granted, underestimated the power of the PlayStation brand, and felt the early launch would be all the extra oomph they'd need.

And the DC had a much better launch lineup than the 360 looks to have.

(First post, hello all.)

Would someone be kind enough to refresh my memory? What exactly was the DC lienup like?

I remember:

Sonic Adventure

.
.
.
.

That's it... I know there's was a good deal more, but nothing's coming to me... anyone remember in its entirety??

DC launch did not have Sonic Adventure. That came fair bit later.

DC launch was: VF3TB, Gozilla, July, and maybe another game. Really bad launch.

US and European launch benefitted greatly from being almost a year later by having Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Hydro Thunder, and many other gems.

Who can forget Pen Pen from the launch lineup for Dreamcast?

Back on topic. 10 million within the first year is very achievable. Launching early with great hardware and developer support is a major plus. This is something Dreamcast had but all developer support left with the quickness. I doubt this will happen with Xbox 360 because MS is going to actually be able to create a market for games on Xbox 360.

Thanks, kindly.

So the DC Japan launch pretty much sucked, huh? Hmmm...

I'm wondering something... MS is doing a world launch, but from the look of things most of their launch games will be US made... meaning that their could be some hiccups in the line-up for the Asia and Europe... typically there a down time of several months for translation and VO dub work -- shoddy as it usually is -- before a game gets shipped off to another region... could we see Asia and Europe (though I guess the UK will do fine) launches be lacking??

American Dreamcast line-up:

Sonic Adventure (Sonic Team)
Virtua Fighter 3tb (AM2)
NFL 2000 (Visual Concepts)
NBA 2000 (Visual Concepts)
House of the Dead 2 (Hitmaker?)
CART Racing (???)

Airforce Delta (Konami)
Armada (Metropolis Digital)
Hydro Thunder (Midway)
Monaco Grand Prix (Ubi Soft)
Mortal Kombat Gold (Midway)
NFL Blitz 2000 (Midway)
Power Stone (Capcom)
Ready 2 Rumble (Midway)
Soul Calibur (Namco)

European Dreamcast line-up:

Sega Rally 2
Virtua Fighter 3tb
Sonic Adventure
Blue Stinger
Millennium Soldiers
Expendable
Incoming
Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2
Powerstone
Speed Devils
Trick Style

Shortly followed by:

Toy Commander
Red Dog
Dynamite Cop
House Of The Dead II
Sega Bass Fishing
Ready 2 Rumble
Aerowings
Cue Ball
Hydro Thunder
Marvel vs Capcom
Mortal Kombat Gold
NFL Blitz 2000
Pen Pen
Tokyo Highway Challenge
UEFA Striker

Japanese Dreamcast line-up:

Sonic Adventure
Virtua Fighter 3tb

???

Sega Rally 2, Blue Stinger, Evolution and Climax Landers were delayed and released at the begin of 1999. There must have been some other titles though.

typically there a down time of several months for translation and VO dub work

If the publisher is japanese that is (game shipped in japan ---> what the fuck is this 50hz mode ? ---> send text to translate to 13 years old japanophile ---> ship the game in europe with black borders and slowdowns). Ubisoft/EA/Microsoft have a pretty good track record regarding localizations.

I think 6 Million is asking a bit too much, especially if they are launching in October. As you say "depending if they can make that many". Let's say for arguments sake, that MS can launch X360 in all targeted regions (Japan, US/Canada and Europe) before the end of the year. Now thats a lot more demand than if they just launched in one region at a time. If you want a good launch, you'd preferable want 1 million units per region, so thats 3 Million units total youd preferably want within a similar launch timeframe. I dont believe MS have enough time to make that many from now til launch day, lets say somewhere between 500,000 - 750,000 X360 consoles for each region on launch day, which gives you a total of 1.5 - 2.25 consoles shipped worldwide.

Now lets say following the launches, 50,000 - 100,000 are shipped worldwide each week from then til December 31, assuming all consoles are sold, at best case scenario, I see a figure somewhere between 3-4 Million X360 consoles sold, that figure is still very impressive for such a short time frame. However MS might not get so lucky, such factors as, manufacturing problems might lead to shortages, and I doubt sales will be that great in Japan either, which may lead to reconsidering launching in Japan until next year for instance, this could push total unit sales down to a figure somewhere between 1.5 - 3 Million total units sold.

I personally think 6 million is asking way to much, however if they were somehow able to do so, it would be a very impressive feat!
