Uncharted : Drake's Fortune*

I'm am comparing among consoles correct - and this generation. It surpasses Far Cry by a far cry. I'm comparing to bioshock etc.

There are few that do water better than Uncharted - especially since it's something they concentrated on a lot. It's one of the things that impressed me the most, and continues to do so. I'm still not talking about splashes etc. But there aren't many games that do that better either...it's a weakness in the industry.
that must be the latest build, the best next gen water thus far.

Can't see the gifs. I'm told to upgrade to pro today! But the GT trailer water isn't anything exceptional : Perfect glass throughout, with no transparency; no surface deformation, only normal displacement; limited ripple effect and weak particle effects. It's not bad, and not ugly, but isn't the greatest water ever. Certainly not a 'volumetric' water algorithm as some games are trying.

Porbably the first game I will buy for the PS3 (I have given in and will get the 40GB model for my Son for Xmas) although I must admit both the Jeep level and this level appear to be very linear.

I suggest you watch it again then.

Clearly you have missed an awful lot.
I stand corrected on the transparency. Under-surface objects are visible if you stop and look - rather murky water makes them difficult to make out in the GT trailer. There's still no geometry deformation though that I can see.

There is, maybe you are looking for over the top, unrealistic deformation and not noticing it ;)

from about 45 seconds into the clip and for a least 30 seconds after it's clear.

It's subtle, and very realistic in my opinion. when you see something fly past under the water, replay the clip and look where you know the object is going to pass by.

The statue in the water that they go around is probably the easiest place to see it.

No real 3D water deformation, instead it is a shader to simulate 3D ripples in a 2D plane. Such shaders are also used in Oblivion/Morrowind?, SP:pT and some other games with different quality.

So far of the games I have played FEAR, Crysis, Far Cry Predator (xbox360), STALKER has true 3D water in larger quantity. FC: Predator is the most stunning on next-gen consoles so far in respect of water effect/quality.

I would say Far Cry's water is alteast matching it and many games have similar water type, it is standard I would say except shaders for creating ripples means +. Splash quality is very inconsistent between different games and even in the same game different type of splashes can look good/bad. For example Far Cry has excellent bullet splashes that looks completly like volumetric particle 'water splash' (might be particles since at v.high particle m.count is 8192 particles) but water casquades from an explosion under water looks bad.

I guess it is becouse it is very fillrate intensive to either have lots of textures to simulate nice splashes/foam and/or lots of particles for this. :)

far Cry (PC) vs FC Instincts: Predator (xbox360) water.

I'm talking geometry displacement. The 'waves' are flat, so when the waves are rippling on the surface, the intersection with scenery remains flat.

am i the only one who's looking at the big picture here? uncharted may not have the best water of any game, but the whole visual package from that video is simply amazing! far cry predator, fear or stalker are not even in the same league graphics wise as a whole.
my opinion though.

Game has to be done by now. So there may not be a lot of difference between the media we're seeing and the final game.

Agreed except about STALKER* since that is another game which many have not realized how much it actually packs in the whole package technically and design wise. It is when you start to analize that you see all those 'heavy' features/stuff that pulls it ahead. But when the art direction is different between games then it is harder and mostly a mather of taste except if going into technicall stuff about what is done and how much.

Props to Uncharted for having well looking explosions and the time the devs have taken to put extra detailed stuff at the player 'walk path'.

*Though slightly modded settings for my version (images at the thread in PC section and looks better than default!).

It is good as it is now but I hope the framerate issue and tearing is less or non-existant in the final judging by the latest gametrailer video (jetski).

It looks good, I think though that it´s being overhyped.
So far I have seen nothing impressive in the game (I´m not talking gameplay) and my PC-games standard in graphics is higher, but as you say: It´s the whole visual that makes it look good (far from amazing IMO).
Not even close to the graphics in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. runing on my computer IMO:smile:.

Good post.

I believe the game is in optimization and polish stage, plus it's not uncommon for a game to release old media or give old builds to the media.

Overhyped by whom? Us?

The art direction of having a more colorful non realistic look has been a good decision. Gives that nice vivid look colorful and quite pleasant for the eyes after all those dull grey/brown looking games.
And all the little yet important stuff like small plants, rocks and insects/animals gives the levels a vivid feeling. Thats what made me enjoy Far Cry, the strong vivid colors/insects and small stuff with the HDr giving to give a nice touch to the whole game.

Release is in November.
If they want the game to have 30fps constantly, they will have to optimize it more.
Optimizing can be something good or bad when it comes to the graphics part, lets hope for the best.

The gameplay looks very fun though, I like games where you can sneak trough enemy A.I. without being spotted etc, kind of FarCry feeling, hope though that the A.I. will make me think as much as the A.I. in FarCry (A.I. in FarCry is the best I´ve ecountered so far, I´m excluding Crysis).
