He is actually holding his breath underwater...

WHO would notice if that was missing? What the hell...

Okay, I'm gonna throw in another nitpick. Obviously shadows are a kinda big deal, and the funky GI in daytime scenes might be another where it's a bit too stylized.

My problem is that whenever Drake's floating in water, I really miss the refraction effects. His entire submerged body is visible without any distortion, and I find this kinda lacking. Yeah it's a small thing, and probably a pretty damn hard technical issue, but it kinda stands out for me.

On the other hand, this is like a super minor issue. The rest of the game is just so utterly amazing and so far above anything else, I sort of feel ashamed for just mentioning this.

Subtleties are relevant even if people aren't consciously noticing them.

Especially with human faces!

Can you point to an example of what you're referring to?

are we sure all cutscenes are real time, i wonder because some part of them, specialy just after a scene transition, you can't hide the characters or modify the zoom.

Some must help me out with a screenshot. Whenever Drake's in the water in the motor boat part or something.

What you should see is this:

The underwater part of the diver's body is heavily distorted. Whereas in UC4, it is completely unaffected by the refraction.

I'll stop posting now. All I can say is that I'm not sure I've ever said "fucking hell" out loud at a game this much, just from the graphics and the whole amazingness of it all. The ballroom is unbelievable.
London Boy! Keep posting! With keeping the spoiler at minimum though :)

It's awesome.
The ramblings in b3d makes me stays motivated to get well ASAP. Without you guys I'm just idling here like a lifeless doll.

The ramblings are my bridge to the uncharted.

Laa-Yosh may not be mentioning this but this reflection is very irritating to me. His hand is actually under the water yet the SSR is showing it. There also seems to be some cut off distance to the reflections. Also don't like the hair shader. Seems like one lobe instead of 2-3 lobes.

They are and they are a beauty to behold.. practically the best cutscenes I've seen in a game. They aren't perfect but neither is any other games.

The cutscenes can "cull" a lot of things out of camera so that most of the computations can be done where the camera is looking -- which is why you can't move the camera (there is nothing outside of that view). They just did a magnificent job with the cutscenes. We are looking at gameplay probably not reaching those levels for at least 2-3 console generations IMO.

Can you name a game that does refraction properly because I can't?

It's not really about who does it better, more about one of the things that UC4 sort of fails at. You know, trying to be objective and impartial and all.

I completely understand the technical implications, it's probably super hard to do this stuff right. It's really just nitpicking.

The way the light bounces off surfaces is subtle and beautiful. I look forward to the day we get more advanced techniques as far as lighting is concerned. It really is the most important thing for me.

We need to start voting on the scoring for the features. I think people have played enough of the game to get a good feel of what the engine is providing.

AA for me is still 4/5. It succeeds very well with static non-movable objects, but fails at movable objects especially the main character and rendering small objects that take up a small portion of the screen that is a large distance away. If anyone objects, please state why otherwise I'll move on to the next features from our list.

Difference between gameplay/photo mode :

It just adds a sharpening filter (that you can disable).

More here : So does photo mode cheat and pump extra processing power into the game's graphics when you access it? According to Naughty Dog, no. "We don't do anything special in photo mode outside of making sure everything is visible when you move the camera around," Kovalovs says. "We didn't write new rendering techniques specifically for photo mode."
