The Last Guardian (Trico, Ico 3, Shadow of the Colossus sequel, etc.) [PS4]

“The Last Guardian has finally been unveiled! I’ve updated my personal site to mark the occasion,” said Fumito Ueda on Twitter. “Last summer, I started a small studio with some of my old collaborators to challenge myself and try something new.”

The studio he is talking about is genDesign and they started their work in Mid 2014 judging from their website. That’s not all, Ueda confirmed his full role with the development of The Last Guardian and promised more project beyond.

“Since last summer, I’ve been working from a smaller studio I formed with the original staff who helped make Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Together we hope to challenge our personal creative limits & the possibilities of what games can be, both with The Last Guardian and beyond,” concluded Ueda.

Glad to see this finally releasing, I can see the issues - the concept seemed good but then when you watch the gameplay I wonder how you are supposed to figure the puzzles out - make the bird/cat jump over there so the platform partically collapses enough for you to jump across but whilst not quite making it the creature grabs the back of your top and swings you to safety. I also thought the log thing looked a bit odd - roll the log down enough for the creature to use it to pull itself up!?

I will get this game for the atmosphere and nostaligic tears but I'm worried it won't be a patch on Ico or SotC.

Ueda is himself on it with the original Team ICO since summer 2014, it will be good, it will be an ICO game. SInce he confirmed it himself, now I don't doubt it. Earlier I was worried it would turn into somehting else , being completed just for the sake of completion. but eith him back on it and 2 years time, it will be back to form.

The Last Guardian should have stayed away...

Why? Because the graphics don't look top notch anymore?

So we've reached a point where indie games with retro 2D looks are okay, but a game that has top-end-from-previous-gen looks is not?

BTW, it seems to me that The Last Guardian is about saving the last living Colossus, which is still a baby.

I just watched it on Gamersyde for quality's sake. Loved it. That is one astoundingly alive looking digital creation. There's just something magical about it that's simply lacking from almost any other big budget game. (as impressive as I thought Horizon looked, it still screams designed-by-committee from the high heavens)

dunno, if they release The Last Guardian in glorious 3D stereo i probably will like it than the current 2D looks like PS3.

It's the same area but the feathers, the buildings, the vegetation, the lighting, the creature, the boy, etc...everything is better.

For reference before anyone loses theirs minds that it still looks like a PS3 game.

Sorry but the PS4 version just looks like the 1080p 'remaster' of that game. It looks almost exactly the same but with a lot less shimmering and much higher clarity thanks to the improved resolution.

It just confirms my doubts that the team have been on holiday for many years.

Just look at this, and then look at the Uncharted 4 video with what looks like a gazillion objects and polygons being thrown around like it's nothing.

Yeah, confirms that the game was on hold until last year or so when Ueda started his new studio.

In this old trailer, there were even some gameplay sequence we saw now.

Animation of the little boy looked quite rough as well.

I was a bit shocked that the cat-bird thing made some dog noise!

So in essence you are saying it's better than the ps3 version and not a game the ps3 could run. Which is my point.

Of course it's going to look the same, the art was pretty good last time, now it's in a higher resolution and better quality throughout.

What worries me is that the gameplay looks shite.

Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt though because of his previous.

I don't see why there should e gazillions of objects and polygons in that scenes not to mention explosions or NPC.
Ueda games never pushed for the spectacle but rather focused on atmosphere and immersion with "simpler" level design.
Uncharted is a different kid of animal with different goals and needs.

That's IMO is intended, Ico and Wander as well have a certain cartoonish feel and clumsiness/roughness in their movements/animations.

Of course. But I also don't expect to see rocks and pieces of things made out of literally 4 big, fat, flat shaded polygons, like you can see especially at the beginning of the video.

There is nothing wrong with expecting that a game that has been in development for years, from a team that has not released a game in 10 years, should be at the very least treated with the same attention to detail that we have come to expect this generation.

Am I saying that I won't buy it? Of course I will, ICO and SOTC were true gems. Am I allowed to say that my brain doesn't like to see big fat flat shaded polygons coming out of my PS4? Yes, I am!
