Dunno about that as it would just be a disadvantage for them. Anyway it will be a very interesting comparision and it will be interesting to see how they use Cell to bring parity as the RSX is not flexible enough. One can test this with a 7800/7900GT(X) GPU and see how it fares vs one with unified shaders (~8600GTS) of similar perfomance class.
That being fine, you are as usual thinking on PC graphics terms. There's no 3D benchmark for consoles, and they do work in different ways than PCs.
While on PC, RAM is a determining factor, on consoles it doesn't seem to be the case every time, because then, judging by fellow developers comments here, there would be a 18 MB advantage for X360 in that department, and most multiplatform games -except some evident cases- seem to be virtually identical, I think.
I mean COME ON. Can't that be enough? Both machines are the closer consoles in terms of performance I've had ever seen, consoles wise. They share the same amount of RAM, ROP -I forget what they're called- and stuff.
The main difference is the internal architecture and the fact that one of them is clearly CPU-centric while the other one is so GPU-centric that it became the main memory controller.
On the PC side, when our PC is 5 years old and we complain about graphics and GPU pains, some PC gamer is going to be like, "You think that's bad? Just wait two more years!".
It never stops. xD
Technology evolves very fast but like, I think it was
patsu, said, consoles have to follow suit and I'm amazed at how they are at the forefront of technology nowadays.
Most people don't enjoy High Definition TV shows, yet consoles have been offering HD graphics, even movies and videos, since 5 years ago. The 3DS will eventually trigger people's interest in 3D movies.
The X360 was kind of amicable towards anyone who wanted to experience HD graphics since the very first day. Back in 2006 I didn't have a HD TV. I do nowadays, but one of the best things about the console is the scaler and the related compatibility.
Even so, they had to add HDMI support over time. It didn't prevent me from enjoying PGR3 and Oblivion -for me the true first "next generation" game, when I saw those vistas and huge landscapes, the tress and mountains in the distance, and then I thought; "Can I actually go there!!???".
Realizing that I could, it was an amazing feeling for me. Plus, the woods and the tall grass looked so great and realistic...I enjoyed that game on a PC display because of the VGA cable and compatibility.
Sure I prefer HDMI over VGA and its washed colours, but seeing HD graphics back then when my PC couldn't run those games was amazing. No other games have had the same impact on me since then. Except Mass Effect characters, story and close-up details during conversations. Seeing Gears of War for the first time was cool too.
The PS3 Blu-ray player is one of the best in the market, at a moderate price. And Sony is taking every initiative to use its platform to contribute spreading the interest in 3D movies and graphics.
Other than that, I don't see many differences between them, not even in exclusive titles -KZ2 doesn't appeal to me, UC2 looks good- but I think multiplatform titles should use every machine's strengths and avoid their weaknesses. So if one is good at vectors and the other doesn't, change vectors on the weak console for anything else. And if one of them is good at transparencies, change transparencies for more solid stuff on the other. Simple as that.
No parity, I know, but it would make for interesting differences and approaches, although artists would have to work differently to get it done and look good on both consoles.
I don't expect many differences in ME2, except adding 7.1 surround sound on the PS3 and some improvements. I'm a little envious PS3 users will enjoy DLC content for free though. I had to religiously pay for it, after taking care of my "weak" finances and working for monies.
Anyways, here is a lovely Mass Effect 2 video for PS3 users. Fun stuff:
Regarding what Laa Yosh said, I agree ME2 art is great, it makes you feel you are actually in the space. Besides that, they managed to create a very rich universe with original civilizations and locations.
That's what differentiates some exclusive titles like Crackdown and Fable from Mass Effect. Fable's art is style colourful and all, it's just that the characters proportions and everything is sort of baroque, I don't know how to explain it. -though, it's a nice game-
