It is rather illogical for them to stay pro-xbox, financially speaking and for a japanese developer that is. Itagaki sure loves the power......

They're one of the premier developers on xbox, on saturn and psx they were nothing, dreamcast they were one of many, ps2 they were back to nothing. Acclaim was sort of similar on the n64, turok propelled them to superstar(super publisher?) status yet they seemed to get lost in the sea of developers on other systems.

hm... so maybe Team Ninja just likes the programming environment?

And as has already been mentioned Tecmo the publisher is not XBox only. Team Ninja the studio is.

Ooh, yeah, sorry, I meant Team Ninja. I should have made it clear. :p

That depends on the amount of $$$ MS pumps into them.

Well, it can be argued that the only Tecmo titles worth their price are Team Ninja´s. :)

Except for Fatal Frame, that is.

True. But kind of unfair since Team Ninja titles are head and shoulders above most other games out.

I think quite a few people would disagree about xtreme beach volleyball. Sure, graphically it's nice, and probably offers more gameplay than most Japanese dating sims, but it's not that great of a sports game.

Sony cannot do whatever it wants. The company has more breathing room than Nintendo and Microsoft but that doesn't mean they can go ahead and do whatever the hell they want. The still need to work with 3rd parties to get them to develop games for the platform, especially exclusives. Sony also has to work just as hard to get the consumer to stay with the Playstation brand. Just because their number one doesn't mean they can sit back and relax and do whatever they want. If they did that then I'd surely expect them to be the next Nintendo and SEGA when it comes to completely losing marketshare and no longer being the big influential player they once were. That's how it stands.

From a games prespective Sony is pretty much in the same position as MS in the US market. They have one big exclusive franchise of their own - Gran Turismo and then they rely on third party exclusives to drive sales. MS does the same thing, but with Halo leading the way. Sony needs to keep 3rd party publishers happy. But I agree that Tecmo isn't that critical to the success of the PS3 and if they have limited kits to give out right now then they should be going to EA, Rockstar, Square-Enix, Konami, and Namco - in that order IMO.

Offhand, I think you can only say that for sure about Ninja Gaiden. The original DoA2 had notable distinction at the time, but since then the games have been fun, looked and moved great, but otherwise been not too distinguished and not too well received by the public. (And less-so over time.) DOA:XBV similarly looks great, but is also mainly just in line with other games of it's type, and also not well received. (Though volleyball titles in general are pretty schtick.)

The rest of the Tecmo titles may not have TN's polish and execution, but still look good, play well, and have been enjoyable. I'm really just talking about Rygar and FF1&2, though. Other than those and the Moster Ranchers, I'm not actually sure what's made it across the pond. (And MR feeds off its own pool, really. Doesn't really attract attention amongst our type. ;) )

Heh, You're right. Calling DOA:BV a game is stretching it. I never understood why they made that, must be a japanese thing.

To clarify: The pace, the quality of the animations, the graphical fidelity of the surroundings, the overall fun and finish of TN games is matched by few, if any, IMO.

How many played Prince of Persia, had a blast and thought "doesn't get any better than this", and then 4 weeks later Ninja Gaiden came out ?

It was pure fan-service. It was also a side-project, done by a pretty small team, i believe (the same team did most of the work on DOA:U too, iirc). For the amount of money it cost to make, and the amount of sales it achieved, it was probably nicely profitable, which is all that matters, when you get down to it (from a business perspective, anyway).

Umm, isn't team ninja a small team? Not sure how much work was put into it, but it did hurt dead or alive's reputation a little as a serious fighting game franchise, it basically made sure the dead or alive series would be looked at for the girls and not for the fighting.

Heh, all this talk about DOA:BV makes me think of when I went over to a friends dorm and a couple of girls were playing it. Then again the reason they were only playing it was due to all the other games involved shooting of some sort or racing :p

Boy, you'd think they'd like a racing game, women are often just as aggressive drivers as men, if not more so.

Depends on if she's a Tomboy or a girly girl. ;)
