Im not knocking the maker of the following game at all, best of luck to the maker etc

I saw this, it reminds me of a quick game mockup I wrote a few years ago (basically as polished as this is, music excepted), but I discarded cause the idea sux
but even now after trying this finished product it still sux, but apparently not!
So its got me wondering, how many other game ideas Ive done & discarded cause I thought they sucked, no doubt heaps.
Perhaps its just better to just chuck any and all ideas out there, like shit to a wall perhaps some sticks. I sort of feel like I did after playing angry birds, it was like I play the first level & Im think OK now thats the intro over, now the proper game can start, 2nd level comes up, wait ... (realization) ... thats the game!

I think your best bet for an indie game is a simple game design, but polish it until it shines. Angry Birds (which btw I consider to be an excellent game) may be the perfect example. The core game idea is really simple, and consequently anyone can pick it up and play. But the thing that pulls you in is that you can continue leveling up your skills and master it. It gives you goals with stars rating etc. It gives you loads of quite diverse maps, perfect mix of simpler maps and harder ones. It has an visual and audio style that fits the game well. Simple idea, but extremely polished.

Angry Birds sux.
I dont think it sux, its reasonably well presented etc (*) from of all the candidates for *the* game of the last 5 years, COD, angry birds, minecraft, farmvillle, others? It would be the obvious game of this generation (like GTA was last generation). Though personally I think its a bit too simple, I mean is this really deserving of the defining game of this generation? (perhaps if it was original, but its not)

(*)though when u see the number of ppl who worked on it, youve gotta wonder why its not even better

see super-hexagon for a counter example :) non polished, non original etc so why the 'best game ever tags'? like I said I made roughly the same game idea before & discarded it cause it suxed gameplay wise (then again I could never see the attraction of guitarhero games)

cheers for the advice humus, yes a simple idea is best, the one Im working on at present is just a reworking of an old boardgame (**) I used to play as a kid. Gotta make & test ~100 levels though, which is far too much & boring for one dude, me (esp when I do all programming & art etc (*)) I tried getting others making the levels but they were just so slow

(*) I love programming, the other stuff is yawn though

(**) personally I think its more fun than agrybirds, but then again I dont play videogames, I havent for years, except for maybe chess

Angry Birds isn't bad at all and AB Space adds a different aspect to the gameplay. I've quite enjoyed playing through all of those levels though some are rather frustrating, to say the least!

Looking at that clip of Super Hexagon, it looks more like my idea of torture than of a game I'd like to play!

Game of the year/decade/whatever awards don't mean much really, it's not a good metric. There are much better games than those in their genres.

if you like angry birds space u might like a simple game of mine (install from chrome) https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jnjddkkalpgdigmhhlblmadodppaniah, I started making it for the IOS (its playable but only just on 3.5" screen)
though unlike angrybirds (which requires a fair amount of luck) this is pure skill.
Though this thread wasnt really about my stuff but just about (just like music etc) its not whether a game succeeds or not has often very little to do wether or not its good.

@green.pixel yes thats what I mean there are better games but theyre not as successful
