Submitted for your approval... a long article on Phantom.

Too long to list, but it actually brings up new points. (I find it amusing that one of the biggest complaint points--the confirmed games list--is down now. :p )

If those max specs are indeed able to be hit for "never over $500" I'll be waiting for the first people to successfully crack the machine and load whatever they want on it, that's for sure!

Seems like the GeForce 5700 is the only choice for video card, though... Wonder what kind of deal they worked out for it? Maybe its OEM price is better than its open market? <shrugs>

Yup I was wondering why MS drop the whole "there's no greater power than X" campain but Now I know.....I Hope Nvidia makes out good on this deal.

So they are saying that for $500 I could get it with an Athlon XP 3200+, 1gig of ram, 320gb hdd, and a GFFX 5700? Riiiiight. If they really will sell it for that price, then like cthellis said, bring on the modders! :devilish:

edit-Why does it say cable modem on the back next to the rf input? Does it really have a cable modem built into it?

I have a hard time believing that myself, but damn will crackers be hard at work on figuring out how to... uh... find creative applications for their gear. :p

Well, i'm still not getting the whole idea. How will the Phantom be able to bypass the installation process of current PC games. How long will it last in terms of HD fragmentation (i guess there will be tools to defrag the HD every so often), how long till it is unable to run games at proper framerates. How good will it run Doom3 and games based on its engine, same for HL2 and derivatives...

questions questions questions...

Poor design philosophy. Just put the NIC in there since most people on cable internet get their own modems from the provider.

This whole decable just smells like a scam. There was a good article on HardOCP a while back detailing all the money the founder of this thing has made doing absolutely nothing. Ah, to have been 28 during the bubble must have been wonderful... :devilish:

If it's a scam, then a bunch of massive companies are going to have egg on their faces, like Intel and Microsoft, who have basically made their presence felt behind it and give it viability. I don't think they're that stupid, so it leads me to believe there's SOMEthing...

Well, hey, look at BitBoys... they've been around since Voodoo2 and only now do they FINALLY have working silicon.

People may laugh at the Phantom, however the reality is still there; the ideologies behind the Phantom are the future of video game consoles.

I don't think for quite some time yet, though. Broadband isn't fast enough, and not everyone is armed with it yet, or thinks about computing in that way... Online delivery is an obvious eventuality, but not for a number of years. And it's certainly possible to be off on timing or not go about it the right way, and offhand Phantom doesn't seem like it's developed enough interest or has enough support to get off the ground.

Phantom will eventually have the last laugh, even if it takes 20 years. It's an excellent idea, just premature.

Phantom will be way dead, though, with people still laughing at it. ;) People still laugh at the Macintosh Cube, though the small form factor craze has taken off in a big way now, and that machine was a lot cooler. ^_^ (I keep hoping they'll bring it back, but I rather doubt it...)

Yes, but not--say--being featured at enormous company's trade shows, or having them involved in a BitBoys-controlled project, despite continual delays and barely having a demo displayed anywhere...

Who can predict what will happen in this industry 10 years from now, let alone 20 years! For now atleast, Phantom is not as functional as a PC and not as convenient as a console, and besides that its $300-$400 more than a console.

The people who made Phantom, their ideologies, what Phantom represents, what it does; will eventually have the last laugh.

It may happen in 10 years, or 30; but eventually Phantom type systems are the future, how the games are distributed, totally Broadband enabled.

Poor consolation to a dead company. WAY too many people who've tried ideas before their time and died, or just couldn't market it the right way while others did later. They'll speak wistfully and grumble later on, but it wouldn't make the Phantom any more of a success.
