Sony PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2)

That must mean it's not successful...
They are at least able to keep them on the shelves. Whether they sell well I dunno. They do seem to be very popular with regular people who want to get VR for their kids or whatever. They are visible, priced fairly low, and they don't need additional hardware.

but you don't need ps5 + psvr2 combo to play small vr games so hard to compete here with standalone quest2, aaa titles is the way for psvr2
while I agree with that, I think most people that own a PS5 feel comfortable in the PS ecosystem, and there still is the allure of games ? (or experiences) that only a stronger device would be able to render. The meat of the gameplay is still very much SuperHot and Beat Saber and titles like it etc, but having access to these 'AAA' experiences from time to time is probably what will be marketed here, at least over what Quest 2 offers.

But I don't think PSVR2 can stand alone without these low budget VR titles is what I'm trying to get at. It needs both to be successful.

yeah I agree with that there is place for smaller titles but if they want to realy succeed for sure they need many aaa titles (like for example full gt7 vr support and not some lame separate mode ;d)

Just thinking out loud here: low budget small games may actually be the allure of VR gaming which is why quest 2 is doing so well, they are at the heart of it; the true roots of VR gaming. I don't think this is something Sony would want to actively miss out on - these low budget titles will be the meat of VR gaming.

I bet there's a large chunk of the Wii Fit effect happening. Beat saber will get you ripped!

Mmm… sold my psvr because it made me so sick I just couldn’t use it. How do I know if this will happen with the new one?

If you got sick before you'll most likely still get sick ... same as me. :p I've heard of some people that have been able to "get used" to the queasy feeling, but I'm not willing to go through 100's of hours of feeling like I want to puke just to try to "get used" to the feeling so that I can VR games.

That said, room scale stuff (where movement is 1 to 1 mapped to your movement) and pinball games are generally fine. But for me, I wouldn't pay for a VR device just for that even though I do like Pinball and even built a pinball machine facade to use with my original Oculus

Why would they need to price it aggressively if it's required to use VR games on PS5? It's not as though you can plug in a competing headset, can you?

It depends on whether Sony think that PSVR2 will manage to be more successful than PSVR1. Currently the state of VR releases shows little to no confidence from the games industry at large that VR is taking off or will take off in the near future. Even with the relatively large success of Quest 2 relative to all other VR devices, VR games are still mostly short experiences with some very rare exceptions.

Even Sony's announced launch VR title for PSVR2 is just an offshoot experience from the main game from the looks of it. But perhaps they'll surprise me and it's an actual full length game. /shrug.

quest 2 costs 300 dollars with controllers, and 128gb memory.
I'm sure Sony can pull a 300 or less for PSVR2, especially if they want to sell a lot more than PSVR1

Quest 2 is also heavily subsidized from what I've heard and uses cheaper LCD panels to try make the headset cheaper. It's part of why they forced users to use a Facebook account (more revenue from datamining user's social platforms).

I'll be interesting to see if Sony will heavily subsidize PSVR2

btw funny that valve index was 1000$ with 1440 x 1600 sdr lcd without eye tracking, technology in terms of vr is changing fast

The 1000 USD price also includes base stations which offer far superior headset tracking, tracking stability, and more importantly controller tracking (body doesn't occasionally occlude the controller) compared to inside-out headsets. It sounds like Sony are putting in gyros in the controllers to attempt to mitigate the times when the controller is occluded from the headset mounted cameras. It won't be as good as Valve Index tracking but it should be quite a bit better than typical headset mounted camera tracking of controllers.

Unlike the Quest 2 and other cheaper PC VR headsets it also uses a high resolution OLED panels. Other PC VR headsets either used cheaper lower resolution OLED panels or cheaper higher resolution LCD panels. So, it's nice that PSVR2 will come with high resolution OLED panels.

SB

I bought Dramamine pills when I first got into VR. I would feel fairly messed up for a couple hours after using it. But I don't really have motion sickness problems anymore, as long as I don't try driving games and I don't use smooth turning. Smooth walking is fine though.

PSVR gave me additional problems because of how grainy the visuals are. The headset is pretty comfortable however.

And then they'll get sore instead. Then tell that soreness to people around them. Then people around them also but it to get sore, err... Exercise.

Could be very interesting if the screen would have proper 120hz black frame insertion.

OLED certainly would be fast enough to switch on/off and if panel can be bright enough the HDR should be still quite nice.

Flickering should also be invisible as well. (For me limit on old CRTs was around 80hz for normal content.)

Looks to be very nice headset, cannot wait to test it.
so leaks were 100% corrent, on psvr1 games were rendered at 60fps and interpolated to 120fps for 120hz display, wonder if its possible to do 45fps games and interpolate to 90fps as 90hz is possibility now with still feeling smooth enough for vr
Psvr had ability to run headset in 90hz mode as well.

Games could run 60, 90 or 120fps and for all of them view/camera rotation was corrected at display hz rate at the last possible moment before refresh.

45fps was not allowed on psvr, most likely the head orientation was not enough and proper frame interpolation would have been needed.
