Sony: PlayStation 3 price drop

Looks like someone has found text on the 80G box that denotes limited BC of this version. I assume this disclaimer appears on all 60G EU models as well?

Without knowing if the 60G NA boxes will also be updated with this, could Sony be using this price drop to phase out the existing 60G unit inventory, then when the current 60G revision dries up (with the PS2 chips in it), it disappears and the 80G comes down to 549 (or less)?

I think I want the EE in my PS3, might nab one soon. Those 5 free BR movies is a nice bonus. CC has the PS3 with free controller with purchase as well. :devilish:

Thinking about why it's Motorstorm that is bundled even though it's not a new game like Lair, rumble seems a possibility.

There certainly seems to be a piece of the puzzle missing from the 80gb bundle. As it stands it just doesn't make sense.

If they do implement rumble though, would that signal the eventual phasing out of the 60gb package? Are they going to do the same thing they did to teh 20gb model??

If that's the case, all I can say is Sony's SKU's and launch strategy were extremely halfbaked.

Launching wuith 2 sku's, cutting one, then launching a 3rd with new functionality and a slightly bigger HDD, and then cutting another...wow...

Huh? I don't exactly follow. Are you suggesting that the controllers shipping will start to have rumble components inside of them? Otherwise I would imagine Motorstorm because 1.) It's older. 2.) It's cheaper. Also, is Lair published by Sony?

So there are really people who think that after they settled in what, March, they now have a new sixaxis controller ready with rumble? And that this controller is going to be exclusively bundled with a new 80GB version that is to be released in August?

Seriously.

It would be Motorstorm because that is a proven, successful game that shows off some of the best aspects of the PS3 in terms of graphics and sixaxis support, because it has reached platinum status, and because in the US it is now the best selling PS3 title, I think.

Rumble can't be it. The official Sony press vid didn't mention introduction of rumble to the 80GB experience, and why include an amazing new technology if you're not going to advertise the fact? If they're waiting for E3 for the announcement, why release the vid now?

If this is the case (ignoring the Rumble rumor for the moment), they are just tapping on the HDD storage space upgrade cycle. It would be something new (and convoluted), but hardly half baked because some forward planning would be needed.

The rumble rumor does explain the 80Gb SKU pricing better... but the strategy (if true) seems a little tagged on though. I hope it's something else... something content related.

The problem is there is just no value there.

MS is worth what, $40? And anotther $60 just for 20gb of extra space?

It just doesn't add up, if there was something else, that would make it all click.

So instead of catching the wave of news right now they're not going to annouce this "thing"? I don't follow this logic. IMO it is a over priced model made to cushion the loss per unit.

Of course I'm sure the "There is going to be something amazing at E3" rumor will soon follow. Typical.

It fits into my explanation, which is that they want to get the 60GB sold out and replace it with the 80GB ... That's not going to work if suddenly everyone treats the 60GB like the 20GB version and 80% buy the 80GB version from August.

But we'll see. I expect in a few days most of the speculation will be over.

Lair is an SCE game to be released in August.

That was my reaction a week ago but I read

http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumor-smash/scea-responds-to-mysterious-red-light-rumor-276459.php
so it doesn't hurt to think about this possibility.

It's not my theory, I just think it's a possibility.

The only rationale I would think of is to save some surprises for the E3 keynote, and also avoid confusion, this is enough info to digest for one day, a new SKU w/ bundle and pricedrop on existing SKU.

Well, it's an model to cushion profits absolutely - but hopefully someone at Sony has the sense to put something else in that box as well, just so that it seems if not compelling, then at least reasonable. An HDMI cable would be good, or a headset or extra controller.

By the way, I don't know what Sony's doing by not having a PS3-branded headset and keyboard/mouse set out in retail. The open standards thing is awesome and I love it (and take advantage of it), but seriously they are missing out on some real basic revenue by not selling some of these accessories themselves.
