Sony plans PSP comeback in America

You can find the specs here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

All of my iPhone friends have a disease. They always pull out the web browser to find answers wherever they are. The 3G one sucks even more battery while in data mode (compared to the old one). Playing games is just one of the many things the device is capable of. All of them contend for the battery. When I talked to some of them regarding battery usage, they all wish it could be more.

The iPhone may very well excel at running games, but I think we should observe how people balance their battery usage for some time. Not all of them are willing to risk losing calls by playing games extensively and frequently.

The link you gave me showed that if you use it for the two most extensive things it can do. Talk time and internet use. You get 5 hours of battery life. However you have 300 hours of standby time and 7 hours of video along with up to 24 hours of audio usage. So obviously if you take a 10 hour block of time and a mix a little of everything in it you should be fine.

Of course whats to stop someone from having an iphone for internet and phone and an itouch for games , music and video. both devices combined are smaller than a psp.

I have a few friends with the iphone , i personaly wouldn't buy an apple product after my first 2 ipods. However if ms copied the itouch and made it as a zune i'd buy it in a second and as long as it had decent games , would replace both my ds and psp as the game machine on the go.

The spec doesn't tell the whole story. You can't just do simple math on the ideal talk time specs and hope things turn up well. :)

I have an iPhone too (first gen, as a gift), but I don't use it much. What I can tell you is the battery life is not as long as I want it to be; certainly less than my Motorola cell phone in normal usage. This is why I still stick to my old phone. Running more jobs on the iPhone is not something I want to do if I am waiting for phone calls. The 3G one sucks up battery even more when you use it heavily.

In the mean time, I prefer another media player just to serve my entertainment needs.

EDIT: In fact, the iPhone is sitting on my desk with fully drained battery now.

Meanwhile, in Japan it's quite exciting to hear what Square Enix has announced for the PSP. For instance that the Final Fantasy XIII Versus (Antagonistis) has moved to the PSP as target platform, and is being made to target the Monster Hunter crowd (i.e. focus on multi-player). And I think a Parasite Eve title was announced as well.

:???: You're talking about the major Versus and not a spinoff? You're saying FFXIII Versus, the big AAA PS3 title, is moved from PS3 to PSP?

No you're completely right, I misread the article - it's the Mobile game ...

Back to original comment, do we know they've shifted to PSP, or has PSP been added as a platform?

I'm not sure if S-E has come out and admitted they dropped mobiles as a platform for these games, but as I understand it, the only platform listed during the S-E event was PSP.

No I don't think it was mentioned anywhere. My guess would be that the following stars aligned:

- PSP is consistently selling more than any other platforms in Japan this year
- with a lot less competition on the software front
- Monster Hunter audience is hungry for a game that appeals in a similar way and Agito is being made to target that crowd (not sure how much of a chance that was in the first place)
- Crisis Core graphics engine is lying there waiting to be used

And maybe Crisis Core sales have been satisfactory as well ...

The point is that there are more and more devices able to do what the psp does and many of the things it does better and in a better form factor. Sure mabye the second gen iphone isn't ideal for gaming , however the psp isn't ideal for music , video or even able to talk on the phone. Next year there will be a new iphone. It will most likely have more storage space , better battery , more efficent hardware and mabye even more powerfull. Next year however there wont be a new psp.

Thats my point in all this. Its not that tommorow 50 million zune 3s will sell. But that slowly but surely there are more options and more choices. Many of my friends using psps have no switched to iphones. No they can't play for 15 hours on the iphone, however for the limited gaming they get on the train its a better device for them. For those who don't like it there is a psp or a wimo phone or a ds. But every year devices get closer and closer to the psp in terms of its visuals. Carmack seems to think the iphone is more powerfull than the psp and mabye it is. Whats to stop next years model from being even more powefull ? That is something that phone copanys don't have to worry about.

There are a tonne of PSPs out there though with exactly the same spec.

I would really expect Sony Ericsson to release a PSP compatible phone / device. It would be foolish not to do something of the sort. Hopefully they can pull it off.

That can be said of any old format. There were a ton of nes systems out there , but we got many new systems after that. There were a ton of gba and gba sp's but we got a ds. The psp has many flaws that I have spoken about before.

The service, which was formally rolled out on July 10th, has sold roughly 2 million programs a day bringing in a gross estimated at around $30 million.

and

To commemorate the one-month anniversary of Apple's App Store, CEO Steve Jobs announced the to-date sales of the service early this morning; a staggering 60 million programs.

Of the programs distributed by the service, games have garnered a significant chunk of the total sales. Representatives from Sega Corp. say that they have sold more than 300,000 copies of Super Monkeyball over the span of its first 20 day availability. At $9.99 a pop, the wild success of Super Monkeyball will undoubtedly gain further developer consideration for the iPhone as a viable and potentially lucrative gaming platform.

Sony should focus on a new device thats smaller and its more with the on the go life style. Create a great service like the iphone has for downloading games , tv shows , movies and other things and then launch the whole thing.

Your right though they should make a psp phone , however they should base it on a psp2.

Very few gaming portables have been comfortably pocket sized. GBA SP and Micro are probably the only ones that don't present as massive unsightly pants bulge. Shrinking PSP down to iPod/Phone proportions would primarily mean reducing the screen size, which to me was a huge perk for the PSP given its media functionality. Sadly enough, if you want to position PSP as the THING to have with you at all times, you're looking at an iPhone clone.

BTW how competitive is the iPhone with PSP hardware-wise? I know it has four times the memory of the original PSP but judging by what I've seen Sony doesn't have much to worry about.

Of course there were/are convergent media players before and after PSP. There will always be new kids on the block, including new PSP hardware and software.

What you said above can apply to PSP too, may be at better rate.

Processor power is a double-edge sword because it can also be a battery power consumption issue. Ultimately, it's a balance in technology and usage. Moving forward, both PSP and iPhone will have better specs.

As for iPhone usage pattern, I don't think you need to speculate. All I am saying originally is we need to observe iPhone owners to know what will happen. That hasn't changed.

From what I heard, it's not very likely. Supposedly Sony is unhappy about giving Ericsson the Walkman brand, and they're extremely reluctant to do the same with Playstation.
