Slim 360

What is the total transistor count of GPU+CPU+eDRAM? Putting them all on one die should be feasible in todays standards (<= 45nm). My guess it would not be bigger than a modern mainstream GPU like Juniper.

But is that what one wants? If there is a defect on the gpu, just throw the gpu away. If there is a defect on the cpu, just throw the cpu away. If they are both integrated, then you'll throw the entire package away if just either of them are defective.

I think Carl B has it right, still several dies but just one package.

I don't think anyone knows given how old the previous speculation was compared to what we're seeing now. ;)

It probably wouldn't be unfair to assume the eDRAM made the jump to the 55nm node at least, which would be a pretty significant leap over the previous sighting.

A major redesign would be needed to integrate it into the shader core considering the dimensions at play. And obviously it would have to be produced on the same process node.

Just a re-cap of the Jasper die sizes:

Xenon: 135mm^2
Mother die: 121mm^2
eDRAM: 64mm^2

Oh I read that as you asking for this slim model. Yes, those would be best guess based on falcon and xephyr die sizes. See my edits above.

This has been strongly rumored, wouldn't surprise me.

MS is going all out with Natal. Natal+Reach+Slim+price drops?

But why would they have a brand name cooler on it?

A lot of people on Neogaf seem to think this means a internal HDD, I guess because of the size. I dont get it, an internal HDD would be both non-upgradeable, and would mean the end of the Arcade?

The non-upgradeable part is sort of believable, with the standard HDD now at 120GB and rising, if a step back. I definitely dont see the Arcade going away judging those latest NPD figures.

Unless I guess, they're thinking MS is going to sell an proprietary HDD that just fits in internally? In which case, you've sort of cut off all the owners of the old HDD form factor (and current form factor Arcade owners without a HDD)? I'm sure MS isn't interested in continually producing two hdd form factors.

At the premium they charge for HDDs, why not? Plus, they got the added incentive of servicing the 40 million old style 360s on the market.

Comprehension fail again. That was Crossbar's train of thought, not mine. Go talk to him about it...

Maybe I didn´t express myself in a good way. The comparison to the PS3 internal drive was to point out the hassle of an internal drive compared to MS current solution and I was still thinking about upgrading an Arcade unit with a HDD.

But thinking about it there are actually several ways for MS to deal with the HDD and still allow a fairly easy upgrade path and keep selling HDDs at rip-off prices;
  • A. Keep the current HDD form factor and keep it external in some way as the current solution.
  • B. Keep the current HDD form factor but make a slot for it and hide it inside the new chassis.
  • C. Design a new proprietary HDD that fits the design of the new 360 slim better and keep it external.
  • D. Design a new proprietary HDD that fits the new 360 slim and make it internal, but allow easy upgrade through a slot.

Microsoft basically confirmed it by "not commenting on rumors and speculation". If it was fake they'd just laughed.

Sep 14 I believe is the latest credible rumor.

But I have a feeling unfortunately that the slim 360 would be tied much more closely to Natal. To go with that "console relaunch" and all. I even think we may only see slim's packaged with Natal.

Natal vs Reach relative release date? Thats a hard one to say. Release Reach and then release Natal a couple of weeks later? That way any new people picked up by Natal can sustain Reach's momentum? They'd want slimline consoles for Reach though, so maybe they'll have a special slim unit for that launch with a large HDD?

Im seriously confusted here, how would anyone here space your three big releases of the year, Natal + Reach + Slim console?

What is the release date of Halo Reach?

If they are doing pre-production tests now, we can expect it to go into mass-production within 1-2 months and that will leave them plenty of time to build sufficient inventory for a early fall release coupled to price drop. Compare it to the leaked PS3 Slim picture from May last year.

That makes a lot of sense. If they are going for a slimmer console, what kind of cooling unit? Could it be a sandwich style cooler with a fan between both the ODD and the Motherboard, in the vein of a GPU cooler?

Jasper's power envelope is how much, does anyone have an idea? From reading some measured power draw at the plug figures in the intertubes (~100W) I'm wondering why it's so much bigger than my lappy's (rated 90W) power brick.

How so? I'm simply speculating the slim will be tied to Natal, not Reach.

It makes sense because MS kept talking about what a massive system relaunch and stuff Natal was. What better way to drive that home in the public's mind than coupling it with an all new form factor? There's also the cost issue, Natal will add some cost, so it makes sense to pair it with cost reducing hardware. This is assuming MS is going to pack Natal in with every 360 sold, which is my assumption. Of course the cost issue doesn't preclude slim from coming before Natal. I just think they'll want to package them together to make better marketing, more of a clean break with the past, etc. Especially since presumably the slim hardware wont be ready long before Natal anyway. Lets say Natal is November, and slim is ready in September (the earliest I could see it). Then it's just a short delay to wait for Natal, so they probably think "might as well wait" given the other "benefits".

I personally hope this isn't the case, as if they aren't paired we could see the slim's trickling out earlier.

Natal vs Reach relative release date?....

Probably.

I'll take a wild stab in the dark;

I'm thinking give Reach late September (My guess is the 28th). It'll take at least a month to cool off (and exhaust the supply of current 360s), then *bam*, in comes Natal with the new model 360 - which will have a spike followed by the slow burn into Christmas. Casual focused things usually will take a month or two to settle in.

My guess is October 26th for Natal / xbox 129.6k. Including a bunch of dedicated titles on launch.

Over the next weeks leading into Christmas I expect you'll see a nice flow of Natal enhanced games (eg, starting out with Fable III at the end of October). I'm going to guess Milo & Kate will be closer to Christmas...

I'd imagine it's going to be a formidable Q4 for Microsoft.

Interestingly, the recent 'butler' video from Sony suggested that Move is going to release in November (but that's for another thread).

Who says you can't make a X360 Slim using the existing HDD?

That picture seems familiar. If I'm not mistaken it was exhibited last week in the London Museum for Modern Art.

Haha yeah just a rough draft to get the point across. I could draw a very pretty one but it would take me a few hours and I'd have to charge for it.;)

Anyway in that sketch the hypothetical dimensions are 10L x 2H x 10D. The design would allow for the HDD to dock with the top flush with the case. The design could be changed so the HDD doesn't have to be docked in the center but instead to one side if preferred. Also a matching thin "grille" could be added to cover the HDD to make for a better seamless looking unit.

Here some quick thoughts....

Nice tiny size! Though not Wii tiny.
Looks like external power supply
Don't see any other reason for the 2nd SATA connector other than a internal hard drive.
More USB ports! Yay!
Toslink onboard! Yay!
What the heck are all those internal connections for?!

Here's how I think they'll do the DVD & hard drives...

DVD will be a custom slot loaded drive. They've got burned way bad on the hacked DVD firmware. Though a top loading DVD drive isn't completely out of the question. But I think it's too cheesy of a design. They'll want to try to reproduce the aesthetics of the Wii(slot load drive & small size).

I expect MS to abandon the old HD & not be compatible with new system. Hard drive could still be an internal 2.5" SATA drive with custom removable enclosure. I think the custom enclosure design has worked for them really well from an end-suer perspective. I never see them go the PS3 route. It leaves too much accessory money to be made on the table. Also, MS already have a custom SATA cable & software that they could include with stand-alone drives for transferring data from the old drive to the new system. They are already doing this with the 120gb add-ons. The drive could probably slide in from the left & go under the DVD drive. It could explain the lack of DVD mount holes, maybe?
