Resident Evil 4 - Remake [XBSX|S, PS4, PS5, PC]

As far as Capcom remaking games goes, I think it's fine as long as they are old enough. There are people who never played the original who maybe got into re2 remake and wanna see what fuss is about but don't wanna play old games for whatever reason.

I am a boomer so I get salty about it but it's the reality of the industry and that's what these companies are reacting to

I wont lie... I want them to continue with remakes.

Before anything else, I want a Dino Crisis remake, then I'd like a Code Veronica remake (because the game is the only mainline RE game which isn't on PC officially) and then I'd like a remake of Resident Evil 1 again in the style of RE2 Remake.

And all the while keep giving us new games. I'm selfish I know.. lol

I also belong in the generation that lived the series in its peak on Playstation.
The remakes although have some things changed or removed to my disappointment, they did a pretty amazing job at trying to upgrade pretty much everything and at the same time maintain the atmosphere and gameplay elements of the original as much as they could, even though not as perfectly as I would want.
I enjoyed Resi 2 Remake so much. I ve never enjoyed and replayed a Resi game so much since PS1. They proved that the old formula can still work.
I think it was a good break to stop trying to figure out new sequels, because they fell in the trap almost every long lasting franchise falls into. And thats trying to pump too many sequels and trying to exaggerate or change everything too much to keep people interested for the next sequel. Which is what ruined the franchise with 5 and 6.

Ironically, 4 is to blame even though it is probably their most milked and most long standing successful sequel. It was a great game in its own right, but didnt really lay down the proper foundations for Resident Evil sequels and Capcom took the wrong elements to base their next games on. The original Resi 4 was a peculiar game, probably unwillingly, communicating a sense of self sarcasm under its dark violent undertones. The majority of the enemies and bosses weren't scary. They were amusing. Their presentation were caricatures of crazy people and stereotype presentations. The way Leon maintained his composure, making fun of hoards of religious nutcase rednecks, while punching, roundhousing, suplexing, blowing them up with ammo available on every corner was comedic. Trying to protect Ashley didnt help either. Leon became the caricature of pretty much every old school videogame character trying to save the princess. And he seemed almost self aware of it. As if he was unintentionally breaking the 4th wall. Enemy animations were very funny. They bounced like weightless punching bags.

The other characters didnt help much either. Having Luis Sera impaled through the heart by a huge scorpion like tentacle and continue giving a speech is material for parody. Salazar was a comedic mini-me representation of Napoleon, suffering from an inferiority complex (expressed as superiority complex) in a Resident Evil game. Ashley was a bitchy brat, almost like a female version of Kevin from Home Alone escaping priests and village people instead of two robbers. The whole game was in essence parody material.

And unfortunately that (likely unintentional) formula made 5 and 6 superficial and mocking material, since Capcom felt that they could exaggerate the virus' effects, the action and the enemies beyond recognition while main characters were becoming more like super fearless generic action heroes that could punch pillars, do kung fu moves, download super skills from the matrix right into their brains such us knowing every weapon and even how to pilot an F16.

I didnt play the full fersion of 4's remake, just the demo. Fortunately, based on the demo, I got the impression that 2Remake helped flesh out better a darker and more grounded version of 4 compared to it's original version.

I’m one of those people that never played RE 1-4 so I’m grateful for the remakes. I’ve only played RE 5,6, revelations and revelations 2.

RE2 and 3 remakes arent the same game as their orginals on the PS1. They are more mods for RE4+. So i think Capcom should have done a more truthful adaption like the remake of the first one for Gamecube.

RE5 and 6 could benefit from some reimagining.

They were multiplayer focused so that ought to be very popular too.

They are never going back to fixed camera angles or prerendered backgrounds lmao. Never in a million years. Resident evil 1 and 0 was over 20 years ago.

It would be like asking arc system works to go back making 2D fighters. Never going to happen and they don't even have the proper production pipeline for it anymore

The remakes are not designed to be the originals but modern games for new generation. Old heads will play the old games.

Eh I would just move on. There are lots of indie games doing that classic survival horror thing.

I honestly thought RE8 was just flat out ridiculous. They added in a third person mode, yet still chose to hide Ethan's face. ;)

The bosses were just completely stupid, into the bargain. RE never had fantasy jive like vampires before. The closest we got was the zealots in RE4, but I always thought RE4 was overrated anyway.

There was a non canon comic a number of years ago that had a werewolf in it, as far as I know. But even that was dumb. About as dumb as Nemesis being able to clip through ceilings in the remake. Maybe that's actually a glitch, though. I'm sure he isn't supposed to do that.

By far the dumbest boss battle in RE8 is when Heisenberg turns into that robot thing, or when Lady Dimitrescu becomes that dragon above the castle, and cusses you while flying around in the air.

Then with that DLC, they used the same assets from the main storyline, and made it like you were in a Silent Hill type world, with mannequins following you in that house where you ran into the elevator to avoid that huge baby monster. And all because they wanted to mock Konami for cancelling their game in 2015.

How anybody thinks RE8 is up there with the classic games, is way beyond me, as I post this here on Beyond3D.

See what I did there? Clever, right? :D

RE8 was kind of nutty but it was fun enough.

But Resi2 Remake has proven that the survival horror can still be upgraded and be relevant today
Well sure but I thought the complaint was it's not enough like the old game or some such. There's less resource scarcity. And the controls aren't terrible loveable. :D

That's the problem. They are "fun" to people that never played the old games, let alone cared for them. I don't know if you have or not. I'm just saying.

I don't support a game because it's brand new and shiny, like a lot of nerds on YouTube do because it's the flavour of the week. I'll enjoy it if I feel it brings something new to the table that makes sense to the respective mythology, but none of the recent sequels were that good in my eyes. In fact, I haven't been impressed with the series in years, quite honestly.

The last game I thought was great was Revelations 2 back in 2015. Since this RE Engine came about, however, I feel as if they've just been making dull remakes and sequels with assets recycled. The storylines are ass too. The characters look and act terrible, with dialogue even worse than the originals. It's just that bad. Cringey.

OK. The remake of 4 was so-so. But it's all about remakes these days. We're in the PS5 era, and yet half of these games are getting PS4 versions too. And they aren't new storylines either. They're reimaginings, that are seemingly retconning aspects of the franchise. That's just annoying and pointless.

So much for current gen gaming, I guess.

It's risky to make new IP. That's just a fact. Even if you're Capcom, or SquareEnix or Sony. They're definitely going with safer bets, but you can't really blame them.. especially now in todays economy. They're building quite the success story though, and I'm sure soon we'll see some new stuff from them.

Hollywood is the same, to be honest. When Asian filmmakers try to bring out something new and it's considered unique, America just imitates it with their own versions, that offer nothing new. Like The Ring and all that. I don't see the point in anybody doing this, other than to cash in on the success these movies acquired overseas. But it is what it is.

Resident Evil is basically dead to me now anyway. Sure, I am happy to know Jill is coming back in the new animated movie. But they once again made up some nonsense story about her not getting old because of the cells in her body keeping her looking the same. Yet she's looking like her RE3 model, with the same outfit.

This is just laziness.
