Rage (id Software)

Deadspace managed to really capture the dark room and shadows as a character or boogieman as well, they even captured the various possible death animations since Resident Evil 1... I know Ds3 kinf of lost it but there is some rumbling that a future Deadspace may use frostbite 3...
Also Demon Souls and Dark Souls should be mentioned as scary games here... Specially since they are skills based and apart from graphics and shadows, death is pretty scary part of the game.

Yeah, System Shock 2 could scare you with what was basically Threepio. That's how good they were at it.

Now we are talking, most scary games :) . Sorry for the OT...

1.) Aliens vs Predator (original PC game from Rebellion, played it with headphones and lights out, wohoo; one of the few times I got goosebumps while playing a game (mortally wounded first predator I came around, he was typing on his wrist PC and laughing; guess what happened next). By far the best FPS I have ever played, after replaying it a few years ago I could not understand how I managed to play it through before the save game patch on the highest difficulty...

2.) System Shock 2 (Laa-Yosh said it all)

3.) Condemned (Played on PS3), that were some brutal fights, you really did NOT feel like a hero and wanted to avoid all fights

4.) Demon's Souls, a bit less in Dark Souls

5.) Silent Hill, only played a few hours on my brothers but the creepy intro music + certain intro scenes are enough to put it in my top 5 :)

Doom3 is not even in my top 10, after a while you knew all their tricks and they were so lame that you usually just needed to turn around as soon lights went out etc. But I really liked Doom3, the graphics were fantastic and it had its scary moments (shadows were great, even though the only game were the shadow impressed me almost more than anything was Blade of Darkness).

Agreed, there is no scarier game that I am aware of. That alone makes Doom 3 a landmark game. I'd welcome some suggestions if anyone disagrees.

I replay the 360 version at the moment and psychologically the game definitely affects you but the gameplay was always somehow limited/static that you rarely felt stress over long periods. Dead Space 1 and 2 cause this fear factor while keeping you paranoid all the time.
Alan Wake had moments where it also got freaking frightening but fell into the trap of too repetitive game play.

I just dont understand why anyone would pick out Doom 3 as example of a scary game
Ok, so D3's scary doesn't work on you, but it bloody well does on me! Call me a wuss or whatever, I'm sure it's true. I find D3 scary because of the soundscape (which, IMO, is very very well done), and the shadows, and the element of surprise - even when I KNOW there's something bad waiting around the corner. I can play through the game and come back to somewhere I've been, and start getting tense when I come to some place that looks like an obvious trap that I know IS a trap.

I'm just not very good with scary games, my imagination's far too vivid and I start living myself into the situation. Not a good idea when matched up against bloodthirsty evil demons from hell... :D

The thing about the bloody footsteps and occult rooms was done nicely though and I would have a different opinion if these threads would have continued after the first few levels.
I remember the creepy shit keeping up well into the late parts of the game, all through delta labs. It was only when actually entering hell that things started chilling down a bit, although there's still a bunch of places where monsters startle you by appearing suddenly and so on.

As for gameplay, in Doom3 the challenge was the attack from behind, the darkness, the limited resources, so I can't really remember if the mechanics on their own were any good.

In Rage you can gather money and buy yourself the ammo you prefer, the health's recharging, and there are no monster closets (at least none I remember). It is a much more enjoyable game in my opinion, the two faults are that I didn't have a gamepad on my PC for the racing part and the last level was indeed disappointing. Other than that it's much better than what it gets credit for.

The gameplay (I refer to how the player controls and is capable of interacting within the game, not graphics) mechanics for their time of release were rubbish in Doom 3.

The standout feature was mainly the volume shadows and darkness which was something that really approached hyper realism as opposed to the dominant current gen FPSs that barely if ever feature this.

Headshots were useless in the pc version, melee was also rubbish. Enemy spiders pulled an endless cheap wave kill that overcome player skill with cheapness.

Multiple hellknights at once were actually quite a pleasure to kill. However

what really killed the PC version back then was that despite PC gamers having the hardware to play, specially online, most turned off shadows killing the atmosphere, the player count had to be modded by players and Im sure the lack of accuracy with headshots made it doa.
This is why sometimes it makes sense for gamers to ask if the game devs actually played their game for longterm replayabilty.

With RAGE however was that after 6 years developing the 3d engine and game, I am to assume IdSoftware had to have mastered making their new game since the first act and second act were set up nicely but then its like they really did not actually play their game and did not think the last level and ending needed more work, considering they were also planning DLC and a sequel and a new Doom 4.

Well, back then I've at least considered it a significant improvement over Quake2 and 3 which I thought were a complete sham only meant to showcase their game engine.

In Doom3 they put some real effort into the artwork/architecture and the these audio msgs, emails where you're forced to follow them. So, some people in the team really tried to get the gamer involved.

What the game lacks is the playfulness of Quake1 gameplay with bouncing grenades and where finding secrets was a big part of the experience. The weapon handling and grenades just feels wrong in Doom3 with the exception of the chainsaw on the console at least. The weapon uses the rumble effect on the pad which makes it really unnerving.

I've considered Serious Sam1/2 as the spiritual heir of the classic Doom gameplay. I had some of the most frantic game experiences with these games where you got the feeling that you managed something just by surviving the hordes.

There's a recent article about id Software's project mis-management. Doom4 is a mess and has been for years. RAGE took too long to complete and the latter part of the game did appear hastily made. A sequel was canned, probably because RAGE sales sucked, and the DLC reduced in scope (and delayed it seems).

So did anyone here play it on the ps3? I just recieved a copy for the ps3 and damn hell this game has no AA ?????? Like no AA ! Is there any way to like fully install it on hdd and improve performance or something ! I remembered it as a good looking game but this is so hard on the eyes !

Post process AA didn't really start to take off just yet, and MSAA & RSX is kind of a no-no for 60fps.

The game uses dynamic res on consoles, so the edges are getting exacerbated by the drop to 640x720. X360 version was better on maintaining the res I think.

Oh so it's the dynamic res. That's why it keeps turning into a pixel art festival sometimes and looks like a ps3 game at other times. There have been moments when I could not even see what the geometry is. I will play some more and see if it grows okay for me or I will just let it be for the moment. Actually the comparison with Tools of Destruction, that I am playing right now, makes it look even worse.

So I took my ps3 to my 720 tv and things are much much better. My 1080p monitor does a horrid job of displaying the ps3 image and makes things blurred and ugly while up scaling it.
And Dang man ! Except for the no AA , RAGE on ps3 looks better than Fallout 4 on ps4 ! :O

I am smitten by this game ! Holy shit it's so beautiful and 60 fps and on the bloody ps3. And there is such a visual flair to everything, tons of passion poured into environments and characters, one can see iD put their hearts into this world ! Man this game needs a sequel so bad ! Much more than DOOM, u can literally see iD guys have put more of their souls in this game than the recent DOOM.
I guess this must have been like what Horizon is to GG now. A break from what is expected from them and more of what theirr hearts desire to make !
Man, I hope the game stays good till the end. The impressions here from u guys seems to suggest that.
And I really hope this gets a sequel. I wonder if Bethesda actually sees a potential sequel as a competition to Fallout ?

RAGE is pure ART! The shooting and enemy AI is also awesome but yeah the ending is the worst of any AAA in the last 10 years. The game as a whole simply feels like 1/3 of a full game. The development was pure hell at id at that time and it really shows IMO. And don't expect anything like it anymore given the success of DOOM (pure mayhem shooter = more $$$ than "story based" FPS) and the fact that most of the RAGE dev & art team is no longer at id software anymore.
