PSM3's PS3 review with pics and a video of the startup screen

For a machine that is meant to be ON all the time noise is a big issue especially in Japan.

If your living in a small 1DK or if your any situation where the PS3 is going to be in the same room you sleep in (or maybe there is one in the kids room) you don't want it to make any noise at all.

Otherwise you have to turn it off instead of curing cancer or downloading demos and other content overnight.

I think the UI (while it certainly could be prettier) is good for getting it's job done. It'll probably take a while to get know how to use everything though.
The pictures only further confirm one thing for me: it's one ugly-ass system :|
sadly I agree.

I'm turned off by the size and ESPECIALLY the load times. Hope the games won't take so long.

The XMB kinda doesn't allow you to get lost, you're always at the "crossroads" of the main menu or sub menu and the selection, the selected item always the one just below the main or sub row, so extra highlighting of the selected item would be mostly just visual candy.
The photo and music files are highlighted by making the selected item bigger than the others.

The visibility does depend on the background though. Not so with the default backgrounds as much as user wallpapers. So selecting the colour of the fonts and icons would be nice (even two colour fonts, with a different colour outline or shadow).

The XMB is clearly designed with the console pad in mind, using it with a mouse would make the experience totally different, i.e. very bad.
This makes me wonder, will it be kinda annoying if you are using a function that benefits greatly from a kb and mouse, like webbrowsing, you'd still might prefer to use the pad (SIXAXIS? Is it the official name now?) for XMB functions and things like switching browser tabs, using the browser menu and falling back to XMB.
Switching back and forth from kb and mouse to pad could become cumbersome.
Font is too smal to be functional imo. I've the same TV and I know it will be unreadable from where I sit (2 meters away from the screen), let's not even talk about SDTV.
It's got the icons, so once you learn them you no longer need to read the text.
Besides, I think the text as it is is already bigger than text in many games. If you can't read it, how can you play the games? ;)
With SD displays, it could scale them automatically, like in Windows it makkes the icons and fonts bigger if you select 800 x 600 instead of 1280 x 1024.
Still, it won't hurt if they give you the choise.

I wonder if an intern who's not in any NDA...

can sneak in and open it up...

checkout RSX and answer all our questions...

hehehe... :devilish:

I am astonished that there are people that call the PS3 an ugly system.... then again, there are people that think the Xbox360 is pretty, let alone the original Xbox...

Oh well, can't satisfy everyone outthere, I guess. I wasn't that big of fan when I first saw the system, but it sure enough has grown on me since. In fact, I quite dig the design of the premium system with the metallic vertical line and am beginning to like it better than the very edgy-look of the PS2. If anything, the system does look high-tec and expensive.

The PS3 has some good design points, but it does end up striking more "bulky and oblong" chords than "eye-catchingly non-symmetric" this time. The 360 has its own shares of good and bad, while the original Xbox was mostly bad. ;)

Ultimately, though, these consoles tend to suffer from design decisions stemming from the thought they they're going to be placed on a pedestal by themselves as the only electronic machine someone will be using, instead of the far-more-prevalent "it's just gonna stick in an entertainment shelf with other stuff" nowadays.

As such, they all tend to make decisions that are counter-productive in that way. With the notable exception now being the Wii. Of course the Wii has very little to distinguish itself with, so there are cases of "going too far in the other direction."

Well, imo, compared to most other home entertainment devices, the PS3 looks better.
IMO it looks classy anyway, but...

What DVD player, AV receiver, display device etc. can be said to be a "looker".
Noe come to my mind at the moment, at least in the sensible price range.
They're all black or silver boxes, with knobs and buttons and trays and displays, all very ugly when you look at them as objects.

PS3, imo, is beautiful even as an object.

Not sure if I want my home entertainment devices all as objects though, it would be difficult to find a place for all of them.
As it is, a console has been the only HE object in my livingroom, and from PS2 to PS3, they have fortunately blended well in their environments without sticking out. The GameCube, Xbox and Xbox360 would stand out too much. GC for it's colour and shape, xbox for it's shape, and xbox360 for colour and shape.

Wisper quiet, HDMI, Bluray player capability and only two wires to be seen anywhere - that alone is worth paying $100-$200 extra if you can afford it. Should be no contest for those who want to pair it with an HDTV in the living room.

Well, it could be one wire if you buy something like this: Radiosphere Wireless HDMI

I heard that they will mass produce one of thiese thingy-es in November. Cant recall the name of company...

I'm sorry but the glossy finish really puts me off it. Looks a bit tacky if you ask me as well as attracting dust and fingerprints.

A matt finish would be much better.

more psm3 impressions. New images!

quick quote
PS3 meets PSM3 - The Aftermath

K. Here's the full story. Which we hope that THIS TIME will clear up any confusion or questions.

On September 29th Sony we kind enough to bring a finished PS3 test machine to the PSM3 office. We played it for a few hours that day, then it went back in a bag and back to Sony HQ. I'm lead to believe that the machine had been in the possession of Sony Europe (or at least the guys at Sony HQ in London) for two days. Taking it out on the road for a visit to us in Bath wasn't a decision they took lightly and we're eternally grateful for them bringing it to us. Thanks guys.

A small observation. The PS3 XMB background colours seem to follow the same colourschemes as that of PSP. The colour for October is ocra in PSP, and in the Watch Impress pics, the background is of similar colour.

To me it's the kinda of machine that looks real nice in the showcase all shined up, as a new piece of AV equipment. But once you get it home, and the novelty wears off, it'll be pretty much the ugliest thing on your average AV rack, It looks oldschool and bulky.

I like 360 but it's not the greatest, black would've been much better.

That interface sure looks sparse and rudimentary compared to the slick, pretty "blades" xbox has going.

Of course it's too be expected considering this is microsoft second generation of Live.

Resistance sure looks nice on that LCD.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Which probably also means you can set your own background, or choose your favorite month color permanently if you want to. I like that feature. Both the PSP green and blue are very nice to look at. At the same time I like to be surprised when the new month starts. So I tend to switch around between automatic backgrounds and a fixed one, depending on the month ...

I like the PS3's looks, but then I also liked the 360's looks, and yes, I also agree that the 360 in Black is very nice too. Still, I think the PS3 is something you need to see before you, with the transparancy and all that ...

The "sparse and rudimentary" look of the XMB is what I love about it... it's simple and clean looking. If you ask me, it wouldn't hurt if MS toned down their OS/blades a bit -- It's too busy at times... empty space isn't necessarily a bad thing (the little ads all over don't help in that respect -- although they are mostly saying what's new on marketplace... I would rather they not be there). Either way, I think we can be thankful that they both seem to have a functional and pretty (each in their own way) OS.

I'm curious to see Rev's OS -- I'm more worried about silly OS design from Nintendo than Sony/MS for some reason (although Opera integration seems like a good sign as far as feature/functionality goes).

Ugh... PS3 looks much better (and that's not saying a lot) in a vertical position. Lying horizontally, it looks like either a very poor retro-modern style attempt, or perhaps a 70's jetsonish Bose designed "slick" piece of hardware (equally ugh). Lying down, it just... is ugly. Really ugly.

The X360 is unattractive enough that I have it hidden in a closet. If I had a PS3, I'd have to keep the closet locked to make sure no one saw what it really looked like. And yes, there are some really sleek and clean (i.e., attractive) A/V pieces. IMO, there are two rules to follow: (1) if you want it to blend in with a lot of other equipment, stick to traditional, clean, unobtrusive designs like Rotel, Lexicon, or dozens of other examples, or (2) if you think the hardware is going to be the only piece of visually exposed hardware (i.e., not really meant to integrate with anything else), make sure it is small and very stylish, like Bose (not that they sound any better than a scratched record), Bang and Olufsen, etc.

The PS3 attempts to do both... but it sucks at both. It's tries to be stylish and sexy but it is too bulky. It's like an 8 passenger Ferarri sports car... no matter what you do, it's going to be an eyesore. Better to make it clean and simple, like a bus, and have less attention drawn to it. The X360 is almost clean and conservative enough, but unfortunately it is just over the line, being different enough draw too much unwanted attention to it. And again, unfortunately, if it is the only thing visible in the system it isn't sexy enough to pull of that spotlight. In black... maybe, I think that would have been better.

Ironically, the PS2 was a great design IMO. As a stand alone, it had an usual eye appeal that pulled off the solo spot, but in a stack of stuff it was very easy to blend in unobtrusively. The best of both worlds. The PS3 is the worst of both.

Well judging from those screens the PS3 looks damn ugly. But it could be the view angle. When I saw it I thought "Whats that old VCR doing there as a PS3?". Then I noticed it was a PS3. Other photos of the system though looked very sexy
And I mean photos from press conferences, TGS, E3, VF4 demonstrations etc. It looked totally different in these
