PSM3's PS3 review with pics and a video of the startup screen

So the PS3 looks sexier in jazzed up flashy display environments where everything else is over the top, and stylized to accentuate the PS3... but it looks like an ugly duckling in something closer to real world usage when trying to blend in with a monitor and a real world table?

Wow. I'm shocked. Not that the 360 is much different, but really.... what did you expect?

On the contrary, I think the new curves, surface details and shiny finish is a logical evolution from the sharp edged, subdued look of PS2. The PS3 builds upon the basic "industrial" feature of a rectangular body that sits on top of a smaller base, which was popular on the PS2.

To me, it looks like a better looking PS2.

No thats not what I said.

Gloss finish is fine for a device that just sits there, as you don't have to do much more than swipe a rag over it when it looks dusty to you. In the PS3's case, you'd want to give a little more attention to the swivel-door that gets fingerprinted, I suppose.

Where gloss really fails is in portable devices, as you tend to get irritated at seeing all the fingerprints on your DS, PSP, iPod, etc. and want to obsessively polish it every 12 minutes or so. :p

OPM gets a taste as well...

Just a few nuts and bolts--the system is quite large, easily matching (if not surpassing) the girth of the 360 and the original XBox, but oh man, is it quiet. The cooling fan emits a pretty subtle noise and the disc access noise is equally subdued. Before you say, "who f'n cares how loud it is,"my 360 is a tad on the loud side, to the point that it sounds like a wheelchair with rusty breaks, storming out of control down a ramp. It's nice to know that I won't have to crank up my speakers to drown it out. Also, as was pointed out by some colleagues across the pond, it does indeed "eat" the discs quickly.

nice find one. thanks for the info.
thermo sensor sounds kinda cool, interested in seeing how that works out on a console (i have that stuff on my stove and its pretty sensitive).

I have one of those sensor on/off buttons on my old Samsung 193P. It actually works out very good. It's actually is a 2 mode button/sensor. If you just tap it, it's OFF/ON. If you hold your finger on it, it switches bettween inputs.

I wonder if they will use something like that for PS3. Like 1 tap = turn off. But hold one finger on button for more than 1 second = reset the machine.

Yeah inefficient, that sounds like how I would imagine it (but slightly switched around). It does make sense as well; the ps2 had the '1 tap' = reset, 'hold down' = turn off.

Oh it's not THAT big then, it's just a wee bit bigger than good ol'PS2... People were talking about this sort of huge monolith but it's really quite normal...

I asked a while back if the on/off button was going to be "touch" sensitive, but the majority of people said no. Looks like Sony did implement it! Awesome news! Thanks one.
